ActionScript 3.0 :: Keeping Focus On Textfield Type Input
Feb 24, 2009
On my stage I have an MC with a textfield of type input. I have another MC on stage with the control for the input like bold, and italic. When my textfield has focus and I click on one of the control MC buttons it loses focus. I know I can reset focus with stage.focus but wanted to know if there is a better way. Like disable the control MC from taking the focus off the input text. I thought this was not the behavior. I thought that only another input type control can steal focus until now.

I have an input box where a user enters in a temperature in Celsius and a dynamic text box where the converted Fahrenheit value appears. All is working well, but I want to keep the user's entered Celsius number constant in the input box and not disappear; that way they can't forget the original number they entered to get the conversion.

I got a text-InputField:
var textfield:TextField = new TextField();
textfield.text = "";
textfield.type = TextFieldType.INPUT;
addChild(textfield);
because this textfield don't reside in the main-class, I don't have a stage-reference for doing:
textfield.stage.focus = textfield;
or
stage.focus = textfield
How can I force the textfield to display the blinking line at position zero?

I have a search input textfield on stage that searches my list component...there is no search button, instead the search is performed 1 second after the user stops typing...(this is done with a key listener)...however the input focus gets stuck in the textfield if you type something (anything) and hit the enter key multiple times...I hit it like 5-10 real quick....then I tried to click my address bar in the browser, and I am unable to type a new URL...it just continues to type in the input text field on screen..

I'm developing a series of learning aids and the final screen requires the user to input some text.I have it working correctly but now need to make it a little more user friendly.At the moment the only way for the user to input the text is to click in each box. There are a total of 6 input text boxes.I would like to direct the user to a particular input text and then have them be able to use the tab key or the enter key or mouse clicks to proceed.As the first step I added the stage.focus = inputStarName1. See code below. As soon as I added the stage.focus = inputStarName1 line I get the dredded error 1009 when the code invokes TypeNames.What do I need to do to get rid of this error?

We got some complaints from users not being able to type in certain chars like '@' and '.' in an input field (textfield). The Textfield is an input field type:
Font embedding seems fine (all needed chars are selected + '@' and '.')
Textfield restrict property is set: "a-zA-Z0-9@.\_\-"
Still some users complain not being able to type a '@' or '.' I've googled and searched the forum and the only thing I've found that could cause this was the wmode = 'opaque' property. We need to set this property to show up Facebook Connect windows. Otherwise these windows would get behind the Flash object in the HTML page. Another reason could be related to the regional settings of the keyboard, which might be faulty interpreted by Flash. Or could it simply be related to a faulty restrict (regex) property?

So I have an input TextField and I'm wanting to use a custom font for it. I tried to use setTextFormat() with a TextFormat object, which does not make any difference. When setting embedFonts to true, Nothing at all gets displayed. I know the problem isn't with the TextFormat object, because I can apply the same format to a regular TextField and it works

I have a basic input textfield that's inside a couple of movieclips. I have it set to input, and the cursor obediently appears when it's focused. However, any typing on the keyboard yields absolutely nothing. I'm curious as to what needs to happen to an input textfield to actually allow it to grow to become the input textfield it was meant to be. Now, the whole deal runs just fine when tested from the Flash IDE, but once it is published and embedded online it's hopelessly useless. I have two fields, the first being for an email and the second for a password. I've tried just about every combination of setting I could find, but here is the latest:
PHP Code:
emailField.type = TextFieldType.INPUT;
emailField.defaultTextFormat = formatField;
emailField.textColor = fieldColor;emailField.text = "";
emailField.background = true;
emailField.border = true;
I'm aware that how something is embedded somehow effects how it works (though I'm fairly certain the display engine is made by the same people? ), so here is the embed [Code] ..... Everything else works just fine though... how the buttons interact, ExternalInterface, etc.. How what should be the simplest task fails to function just amazes me though. Do I have to literally make listeners to process all of the keyboard input? That would suck... but why would it work fine when I do "Test Project" and not when it's published and embedded?

In order to use a pixel font in my textfields, I have created a font class in the Flash IDE. Then, I created a TextField instance with the font embedded with the anti aliasing set to bitmap. I export an SWC with all those things.I created a class with a nice API to be able to deal with this stuff easily.In FDT, I use class and this all works properly.
The issue here is that I now want to use one of these textfields as an input. I tried setting the textfield type to TextFieldType.INPUT, however the only thing that this does is allow me to select the text, I cannot type. I also created another asset with the type already set to input, does not work either.I tried with just the asset, not with my class, and then I can type ok.Is there something that prevents a textfield from being editable once it is part of a sprite? Here is the code of my class with the API:
package net.jansensan.as3fflikeui.text
{
// + ----------------------------------------
// [ IMPORTS ]

I have a series of editable text areas in which I want to be able to add a variable on the click of a button.
If I click the button the textarea loses focus and so I cant code which textarea I need to add the variable into. Can anyone think of a way of keeping focus on the textbox, inserting the variable and then allowing the user to carry on typing.
I've been playing around with the setFocus function trying to get this to work with no success.
Here is a snippet of my code:
public function addFirstName(myText:string):void{
myText = myText + "<<firstname>>";
}
<mx:TextArea id="txt1" change="text1=txt1.text" text="{text3}" editable="true"/>

I'm sort of re-discovering Flash. As such, I'm a bit rusty with all the ActionScript and general techniques. I have a site that loads swfs on higher levels with loadMovieNum (i.e., a pop-up photo gallery). The only problem lies in lower level buttons still remaining active; apart from the aesthetic issue, I don't want the user to be able to "accidentally" click something on level0. Is there a general method for keeping the "focus" on the highest level, or making any interactive elements below inactive?

I have a numerical stepper,and a user can click on a textfield, then click the up and down arrows on the stepper to change the font size,i then try and set the focus back to the textfield and put the caret at the end of the textfield, but the stepper keeps focus anyway.Here is the event handler for when the stepper value is changed.Get the textfield's current format, change the size, set the new format, then focus on the textfield and set the caret position, but the caret just stays inside the stepper.
Code:
private function handleChangeTextSize(e:Event):void
{
var tField:TextField = Main.LAST_FOCUSED_OBJECT;[code]....
I've had problems with other components too with the exact same focus issue and the only solution i've ever come up with is to set a timeout for like 100 milliseconds to set the focus back then and it works. another way to do this without the "hack"?

I'm trying to give focus to a text input with instance name "input" so that when I run the movie, there is a blinking cursor where the input is so that the user has some visual cues. I also changed the background and made it only accept numbers. This code is in an init() method, which is run from the constructor
input.backgroundColor = 0xFFCCCCCC;
input.restrict = "0-9";
stage.focus = input;
The first two lines of this work fine, the background is grey and it only accepts numbers as expected, however the third line doesn't work. The input text is not given the focus. Once I click on the input text then I can see the blinking cursor. I also tried this.stage.focus=input;, but that didn't work either.

Apparently when a swf is loaded, the application does not have immediate focus. Even if the code
stage.focus = myInputBox
is in the constructor, the user must tab or click the inputbox to obtain focus.

found only one thing that seemed to be on the lines of what I am having issues with:
stage.focus = this;
My problem: The the flash app I am working on, some of the controls are done with the keyboard. At certain points, you need to click on an on screen button to continue. When I do this, it seems the focus is lost from where it was, and I can no long use keyboard actions (such as the spacebar KeyboardEvent that works prior to clicking the mouse)
I will admit that I am a newcomer to Flash (only played with it for about a month now), and I don't know much about the focus stuff. Basically, I want to know how to set the focus back to where it was after the buttons are clicked.

i have made a flash movie which is working perfectly. I used the tutorial by GotoAndLearn which you can find here...[URL]... which shows how to make a preloader as a separate swf file and he states that you won't need to worry about the swf file that is loaded by the preloader.
He was correct for everything in my movie except for the
Code:stage.focus = null; code which i use to move the focus away from a textfield once a person has entered text and hit the Enter key. Basically, i just don't want the typing cursor to hang around after the user hits enter.

I had a question regarding the 'passing' of focus. I have a class (more like a component) which contains a TextField.If I give 'focus' to the class, how can I send the focus to the TextField (which is private to the class containing it, like a component).To elaborate, I'm not sure focus occurs on 'just the endpoint' or 'to a branch'.If focus is just given to the endpoint, how does my component disregard having focus and gives the focus to the endpoint?If focus is a given to a branch, what if focus is given (via mouse click) to the text field? I would have an event listener catch the focus event which shares the focus with the parent, but the problem there is once the parent has focus it shares the focus with the child which creates a loop.
