ActionScript 3.0 :: Loading A File Of Any Type With Flash 9?
Oct 23, 2009
I'm trying to implement a feature in my Flash app that lets a user choose a file of a certain type (in this case it's a simple text file with a special extension) on their computer to the application and then use the data from the file within the application. I know this is possible with Flash 10 with the addition of the load method in FileReference, but, unfortunately, Flash 9 doesn't have that.
Is there any way to get Flash 9 to do this without having to resort to uploading to a server and then downloading from there?
(For anyone wondering why I'm so concerned with Flash 9, the simple answer is that my users might not be the most computer-savvy people, so we need to be as backward-compatible as possible.)
I am trying to import a SWF file into a custom loader and then treat the loaded SWF file as a MovieClip object. The code for the functionality can be seen below.
public function loadMyMovie(movie:String) { var now:Date = new Date(); var rnd:String = "?randomize=" + now.time;
[Code].....
When I do this I get the following error.
"Implicit coercion of a value with static type flash.display:DisplayObject to a possibly unrelated type flash.display:MovieClip."
I am currently getting Error 1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant:HTMLLoader.The main problem I am having is that I removed all references to HTMLLoader earlier (because I know HTMLLoader only works with AIR). I don't know why I am still getting this error. This is my code:

I am loading images and data into flash via XML. Some bits of data are missing an image or just don't have one for various reasons. When the image URL is null flash returns the message TypeError: Error #2007: Parameter url must be non-null. I have been trying to catch this error using IO error event but I am unsure if this is the the correct method for doing this as I can't seem to get it working. This is causing a problem for me because when I add the items to the stage the data doesn't match the images and what I would like to do once I am able to capture this error is push a default image into the _trackArray which i will then use to add items to the stage.
I have an issue using external as files. I'm working with a Flash Professional project in Flash BuilderHere is some code on the timeline (I got the code like this, don't have the time to abandon this practice because of deadlines):
import com.companyname.AwesomeClass; include "external.as"; And here's external.as
I am using FlashDevelop to develop flex applications and wanted to paint a LineChart in a panel. I used an example of Adobe itself to be found here. When I compiled it FlashDevelop showed the following output file type was not found or was not a compile-time constantFor Both LineChart and AreaChart.Can someone tell me why this happens? I also tried it in the code by importing mx.charts.LineChart, my code completion found the classes but when compiling the same error occurs.
limiting or correcting the behaviour of FileReference.save isn't possible.Can anyone suggest an alternative (server is Apache/PHP) that matches all of my criteria from this post and avoids the pitfalls I discussed with Jacob?I'm saving an image from my AS3 app using FileReference.save(). This is the code, which works fine:[code]This opens up the save file dialog as expected. I'm using this rather than sending the byteData to PHP because I want the user to have a familiar dialog box that lets them set their own file name.
The problem comes when users have their operating system configured to display file extensions, like I do. This means that in the save dialog the file name contains the extension as seen in the image below, and so it is very easy for the user to delete that extension when they rename the file. Because the default file type for this box is 'All files', if the extension is deleted the file is saved with no type.I don't know of any way to force a file type on the save dialog (if there is one that would be my preferred route) so failing that can anyone suggest a safe way for me to do this that still allows the user to set the file name themselves using a standard dialog for their OS?I did try putting in a call to FileReference.browse() before the save() as shown in this tutorial, but that throws an error because you can only perform one FileReference call at a time.
im working on a website called [URL] and im trying to get it to have coming soon on it so I created a swf file called index but it wont play unless you type in. [URL] For the life of me I cant figure out why it wont go to it...im using dreamweaver cs3 to create the page
When am importing the xfl type file to flash Many blank Static text box is appering. Is there anyways to remove the blank static text box without selecting one by one. Check by Ctrl+A
How would you defer loading of other graphics on the page until after the images in a Flash gallery's images.xml file are finished loading?Is there any way to detect for this, or would I only be able to check if the flash swf object is finished loading? I'm pretty sure the swf object would be loaded/ready as with document.getElementById('flashobject').onload = function(){}; before the corresponding images have loaded though, instead of after.

I get the error message. Doing like tuts said. package { import flash.events.*; // rememeber to import all flash libraries or the ERROR will come up with "TYPE" does not exist etc.

I don't understand why this script doesn't work. I am new to Action Script 3.0 and I watched this incomplete video on youtube. -- [URL] and I got the fails below.
Is there any way to determine a file type from a url when the file extension is not a reliable indicator? Since there are different APIs for playing video, audio, or displaying images, you need to know the filetype beforehand.
I am building little games never anything too big. I'm having fun. I'm getting the following error message 1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type String to an unrelated type flash.display:DisplayObject.
It's got to do with the varObject variable I pass into the hitTestObject (at the end of the code) a. I exported the moveclip for actionscript and gave it an instance name so what's the problem???
So for instance, I've got three .as files called 'Helicopter.as, Game.as, Blue.as' and I also have a .fla file called Helicopter.fla (These files are all suppose to link together, to make the helicopter game) . In the Game.as file, I have the following;
[Code]....
Flash doesn't recognise the original Helicopter symbol (in the Helicopter.fla file, because I deleted it). But I want the system to detect the 'circle' drawn using API (In the Helicopter.as file). And I have no idea how to how to name the API drawn circle 'Helicopter', thus I'm getting an error. So how do I name the API circle to 'Helicopter', so the Game.as file recognises it.
I keep getting the following error msg below I would be very happy if some knows the solution to this: Error Msg: 1118: Implicit coercion of a value with static type Object to a possibly unrelated type flash.events:Event Object A dispatches Event as:
I have two type definitions (references of type Class) in ActionScript 3 and I need to figure out if one is a base type (class or interface) of the other.I had hoped something like the following would work, but alas it did not:
var isBaseClass:Boolean = MouseEvent is Event;
It is understandable why it doesn't, but it would still be nice. I can't use describeType either, since for objects of type Class it doesn't actually return the correct inheritance chain but rather just return the types Class and Object, which doesn't help at all. I can use getQualifiedSuperClassName in a loop until either there are no more super classes or there is a match, but it's less than ideal and doesn't work for type checking against interfaces.
I have a flash file that is 1.5mb in size. As it takes about 6 minutes for someone on dialup to load this file, I have created a smaller swf file and loaded the larger one from it but I don't want the larger one to begin to play until it's fully downloaded. How do I set this up? I have set up the action script 2 as follows: loadMovieNum("top2.swf", 0);
Basically I have this code where a swf files is loaded withing another swf which is pretty cool and useful. Now when I use it in a swf file which does not have a actionscript class attached to it, it works like a charm but when I attach a action script class I get the following errors:
1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: Loader. 1180: Call to a possibly undefined method Loader.
I need my action script class attached for other functions to work. Below is my code var Xpos:Number = 0; var Ypos:Number = 50; var swf:MovieClip; var loader:Loader = new Loader(); var defaultSWF:URLRequest = new URLRequest("level select.swf"); loader.load(defaultSWF); [Code] .....
I'd like to know how to use the JavaScript onChange event on <input type="file"... so that when a user selected files, onChange will call Flash to return the file's size and decide what to do next.2nd. How to use JavaScript to exclude this check, if the browser doesn't have Flash.
I've inported a flv video and embeded it in one of the templates flash has, when i publish it and I go to the video.html file it plays, when i go to the video.html via my website I get the loading type image on the tracker bar. what is wrong? THe files are all linked correctly, it's video.swf as everything is in my "video" folder.
