I created multiple classes for a platforming game in AS3 and when i am making the levels i simply drag the objects of a certain class to the stage from the library. My problem is that i am unable loop through all of the objects of class type wall from another class of players.(so that i can make every player created not go through every wall created)
Like: for(i=0 i<numberofwalls i++){
do sumthing with wallobject(i)
}
Are there any functions that can return the number of walls dragged to the screen and one that lets me access each individual wall dragged to the screen?

View 6 RepliesI'm adding a series of objects dynamically to my flash movie from xml but they won't appear when I run the movie. I have nearly identical code adding objects in a different swf that works just fine. I have tested this 8 ways from Sunday including ensuring that they were added to the container which is a child of the main MovieClip (tested the display list), that they were added to stage (had a listener for ADDED_TO_STAGE) and that their position was correct (displayed x,y values and compared them to mouseX & mouseY values). They are in the correct place in the display list. Still there are no objects. The class is linked correctly, I have movie clips in the library.[code]
View 3 RepliesI am working in on a Flex / Air application (using PureMVC) written virtually entirely in ActionScript 3 (i.e. we use very little of Flex). View components are added to a Canvas object in the main application window and these Views then load other movie clips, images files, etc.When I remove a View from the stage, I do so using application.canvas.removeChild(). This fires an event in my PureMVC mediator for that View, which removes any event listeners that were set up and everything appears to be dandy.However, the movie clips are still playing in the background. They are not causing any trouble on screen but they are simply there, playing somewhere in memory (e.g. I can see trace statements from them) and I want them gone. I suspect the View that was removed from the Canvas is still there too, but I can't prove it.
Setting the View to null doesn't do anything. I'm surprised that AS3 doesn't include any method to simply and effectively destroy a Display Object and all of its children.Is the only way to do this to tediously unload all of the movie clips, etc. and then hope that Flash will clean them up?

View 2 RepliesI have had a long post somewhere on here and just wanted to start a specific post on just associative arrays. First of all I have an array which I don't know if it's an array or an associative array or an object or both. ie: I read that the below would be an object but works as an array too.
The problem is when I use this array as references to instantiate classes in a runtime shared library.I seem to be able to create the appropriate arrays and objects BUT I definately can't use/acess them properly. I massive confusion between movieclips and objects. I get a forced conversion error when I try to add objects to a movieclip . simply because I want to add the mc elements to the stage.

In this game attached I need the old Children (rats) to hurt the character when he walks into them, however only the most recently added Child is active in that way... also the rats seem to appear above the character instead of below, is there any way to resolve these issues??
View 4 RepliesI have a Sprite called pageContent. Inside pageContent are 12 more Sprites with unique names, a couple of Buttons, and some TextFields. Inside each of the 12 Sprites I have either one or two TextFields and one TextInput. My question is, since they are children inside a child of pageContent, how can I access them? Here is how I am trying to do it:

In my mind, this should totally work. But surprise, surprise, it doesn't. I have debugged it and it works fine for the first two lines, but when it tries to get numChildren of a Child of pageContent (line 3), I get this error: PHP Code: 1119: Access of possibly undefined property numChildren through a reference with static type flash.display:DisplayObject.
I want to have a rollover effect of a movieclip (mo1) inside a movieclip (mo) of another movieclip (popup1).Is it possible to do that? I try calling it using this code in the frame 1 of my flash, am i doing wrongly?

Newbie to XML here and I have what I *hope* is an easy problem, but I just don't know the answer. And as I have to try and show this by Monday, I'm sort of stuck. I am trying to pull in information about houses via an xml file. Each house has 1 address, 1 owner, 1 description, and about 6 photos. I have no problem accessing the address, owner, etc, and I can always access the first photo, but whenever I cycle through the photos, I seem to cycle through the first photo for every house, not every photo for each house.
Basically, I need the children <images> to go up by one, without the the parent going up by 1. I am hoping I am describing this well. My code looks like this:

I have a Canvas which has many components inside it and those again, have many components inside them.
getChildren() returns only the top level children. What is the best way to retrieve all the children (children of children of children and so on).
Well, I sorta know how to do this by iterating through the children, but the code is really messy. I'd prefer to use a nice recursive function. Has anyone written this before? Or is there a Util class to do this?

for some reason STORAGE[0].getChildAt(0) works whereas liner.getChildAt(0).getChildAt(0) does not. STORAGE is a movieclip and a child of liner. the error is something about not being able to use getChildAt on a display object. what's wrong? is there any other approach i could use? PS: liner.getChildAt(0) works and does indeed seem to refer to STORAGE[0]

But there are some elements that I only want to run once and not repeat once the embedded movie loops (link introductions, where objects fly in and transition into the button). How can I set the one time animations to fire just once, while keeping the embedded animation on a loop?

View 1 RepliesInternally Flash obviously keeps a list of the primitives drawn using Graphics so I wondered if you have many such primitives in a Sprite, can you re-position/remove/alter individual items rather than clear and re-draw everything? Or is this deeper into the bowels of Flash than you're allowed (or recommended) to go?
View 4 RepliesI'm using Zend AMF to send my remote objects to Flex. I've defined a Constant class and created getASClassName() method. Then I've created Action script class in flex.
Objects are send successfully, but they are deserialized to generic Objects in Flex instead of specific ones. EDIT: On network monitor in Flex I can see that AMF value is set to com.my.project.valueobjects.Constant. Although array from event.result contains Objects.

I have an array of temporary objects created in a for loop. The objects are of type class "Tile", a class I created. However, it appears that whenever I create a lot of tiles in the for loop, the program slows down indefinitely.
While the array is whiped at a later trigger point, I am thinking that perhaps these Tile objects are not being erased from memory. They are being created on the fly in a for loop, and the array is being reset to "array = []".
Are the objects still in memory or are they cleaned up when the array is set to []?
What I have is a game with a Level object, inside the Level is a Player object, and they don't have instance names given, what I'm trying to figure out is how to do is make it so that the player can change the x or y properties of the Level object.
To be more precise, I'm making it so that when the player moves in a certain direction, he either moves accross the stage, or he starts moving the Level object around the stage, it'd be in an Event kind of function, now I can easily make the Player move, but I don't know how to make the Level object move which the player is inside of.
I have a service which returns an Array of ObjectProxy objects. I would like to cast this to a custom object (a value object) and create an ArrayCollection. I will try to give as much detail as I can. I am creating an CRM application using Flex(Cairngorm 2)/Java/Hibernate. The basic problem I am having is this: I have a Customer class in Java that has an ArrayList of Address classes. I have a Customer class in Flex that has an ArrayCollection of Address classes. When I make the remote object call for a Customer I get back a Customer object in Flex, but the ArrayCollecion objects have a data type of Object instead of Address. If I try to call for a List of Address classes I get the same result. If I try to call for a List of Customer classes I get a list of Customer classes in Flex. Using tomcat 6 with the following jars:

How do I align a movieclip, which width and height is user-defined, inside another object (this one is static, though). Top-left alignment is easy, x=0 and y=0, but what about center, center left, bottom left, etc? Math(.round) i suppose, but how?I want an object (static) inside the movieclip (user-defined) to stay aligned to, for instance, the top right corner, similiar to the minimize, maximize and close buttons at the top right of your browser.. The height and width data is pre-defined by the user in another file.But that does probably not make any difference...
