ActionScript 3.0 :: Variable In Child Not Being Remembered
Feb 9, 2009
I have a quick question on my main stage I have a movieclip called menu which dynamically gets movieclips called menuItems. These menuItems have a variable called urlLinker (basic string) which basically gets a link when the child is created. But when I make a function that should retrieve the link it gets nothing just empty.
Main stage code
Code: Select all// imports
import caurina.transitions.*;
import flash.display.*;
import flash.events.*;
import flash.net.*;
import flash.text.*;
import flash.geom.ColorTransform;
[Code] .....

I have an event that's triggered when the webcam/mic access is allowed/denied.
addEventListener(StatusEvent.STATUS, sendStatusResponse);
I need sendStatusResponse to be fired everytime to let the server know the stream has started, however if the user has clicked on the remember checkbox this function is never fired.
Is there a way I can prevent them from clicking remember, or is there a better event to use so that I can store a timestamp of when the stream ACTUALLY started.

I'm trying to create s simple website by using flash. My idea was to have a series of buttons that when i click will add a child to my stage. Now my problem is that i can only figure how to remove that child again by clicking the same button, i would like that the child could be removed by clicking any given button.
Below you see the code for two of my buttons. It is basically made up of the snippets from Flash CS5. I've restricted the amount of children thath can be added, so that no two subpages (children) can be added at the same time. When i add the child by pressing a button the child will be the seventh child on the stage. Is it possible to then make a piece of code for the button so that given a child number seven is already at the stage this will be removed?
ActionScript Code:
infobtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, fl_ClickToLoadUnloadSWF_info);
var fl_Loader:InfoPage = new InfoPage();
var fl_ToLoad:Boolean = true;

This is probably a fairly easy answer, but I can't figure it out. I have a dynamically added child, and I have a dynamic text box on the parent. I'm thinking that it should be possible for me to add to the text box from the child timeline, but I don't know how to target the text box.

Is it possible to pass a variable from child to parent movieclips. I can pass it from parent to child but not the other way around. I have a main movie which loads a child movie:
loadMovieNum("slides.swf",1);
I want to pass variable from slides.swf to the main movie. Is this possible?

I have a simple BOOK script where I have 10 pages (for example purposes). Each page has a vocabulary word on it. Currently, I simply created a vocabulary MC separately for each page and it works fine. Problem is, that leaves me with 10 Vocabulary pages and I would rather have 1 that loads info based on a var on the main page.
WORKING SCRIPT
var loaderZ:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
loaderZ.dataFormat = URLLoaderDataFormat.VARIABLES;
loaderZ.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, loading);
[Code].....
I am getting the word "depressed" from page 1 (verified by trace) Unfortuntely this does not work.
If I change the last line of code to:
VocText.htmlText = loaderZ.data = word;
Then it outputs the word DEPRESSED to the text field VocText but does not return the value from the txt file.

I'm trying to use a variable to remove a child from the stage and I get this error:
Scene 1, Layer 'action', Frame 108, Line 471067:
Implicit coercion of a value of type String to an unrelated type
flash.display:DisplayObject.
What I'm trying to do is to link some keys to add movie clips to the stage. But I need to have only one movie clip at the time on the stage, so, if I press a key to add a movie clip on the stage, the one that is already there needs to be remove. So I set a variable called "actualConf" to hold witch movie clip is on the stage. I simplified the code a bit to add it here (If I press "Q", the movie clip "lise" is added to the stage, then if I press "W", I want the movie clip "lise" to be removed than "nancy" to appear), I added a comment where I get the error :
Code:
Select allstop();
var actualConf:String = "null";
var lise:mcLise;
var liseX:Number = 50
var liseY:Number = 50
[Code] .....
Because I will have about 15 keys linked to 15 possible movie clips, I don't want to use the "if" condition 15 times.

I'm working on a sliding gallery like Hulu. Setting it up and the sliding slides in and out is working fine. However, I need to add and then remove a button to each slide as it comes in and goes out. (I initially tried including the button on each slide, a mc, but this proved problematic for the event listeners). So when the file loads up, I add a mc to the first slide of the group like so (features[] is an array of movie clips - my slides):
Code:
var goBtn:MovieClip = new FeatureButton();
features[0].addChild(goBtn);
goBtn.x = 350;
goBtn.y = 230;
So I add the button/mc to the first slide - works just fine.
So there are two handlers, next and previous. So I started with the next handler. The first thing I have to do is kill the button on the panel that is sliding out, so I do that like so:
Code:
features[featureCount].removeChild(goBtn);
goBtn = null;
(featureCount is a counter keeping track of the slides). This works fine. I click the next button, and the button on the slide disappears and we move to the next slide - perfect.
So then I add the following next - exactly like I did in the beginning:
Code:
var goBtn:MovieClip = new FeatureButton();
features[featureCount].addChild(goBtn);
goBtn.x = 350;
goBtn.y = 230;
This time adding it to the current slide coming in - but this generates the following error:
Code:
TypeError: Error #2007: Parameter child must be non-null.
at flash.display::DisplayObjectContainer/removeChild()
at featuregallery_fla::MainTimeline/nextFeature()
How I'm getting an error on the removeChild() when that is already gone. I assume "parameter child" means goBtn - yes it is null because it's been removed. But I'm not trying to do something with that. I can only guess this is a variable scoping issue with goBtn - but I'm not seeing how to resolve it. Flash file attached.

I have a flash file which uses php to manipulate a database and returns a variable (data_xml) of xml formated data from the database. This happens, along with other things, within the parent. Now I have a child movieclip that displays the parsed data but I am having trouble accessing the variable from within the child movieclip. The code related to this is:
var myXML:XML = new XML();var myXML = XML(event.currentTarget.root.data_xml);
and I get the following two errors which point to the second line as the problem:
1151: A conflict exists with definition myXML in namespace internal.
Warning: 3596: Duplicate variable definition.
I have unchecked "Automatically declare stage instances" because I've seen that suggested for the 1151: error, but I still get the same two errors.

I have a public variable set within fx:Script tags in a parent component that I'd like to access directly from a child component. How can I do this? I don't want to pass the variable to the child component (I know how to do this and am currently using this approach). Following is a simplified version of the mxml:
Note: SimpleComp is an HBox with a couple of lists.

I'm passing a number in my HTML through FlashVars to a swf, I load an external swf into that parent swf which needs the variable that I passed.
I can use the variable passed in the parent, but I just can't understand how to attain that value in the child swf.
I've been looking into dispatch event but it seems way overkill. Haven't seen any examples dealing with something so simple.

I got a variable "VideoFolder" well defined in my root level. However when I used this variable directly in child layers, my script does not recognize it and I get error 1120: Access of undefined property VideoFolder. I tried changing VideoFolder with _root.VideoFolder in all my child layers scripts, but it changes nothing.

is there anyway to create and define a variable in a child from the parent? For example, if I add a child to the stage with code, and then want to be able to say
child.variable=0
to create a variable in the child and be able to edit and read the variable. I know the above code is way off but it's just to kinda get the point through.I have to define the variable this way.

I have XML that looks like this:
<question>
<type_elt>
<opt_out_flag />
</type_elt>
</question>
type_elt is not an element name; it might be <single>, <multiple> or something else, determined at runtime. How, given this, can I detect the presence of the opt_out_flag element?
I tried this (where xml refers to the question element):
if (xml.*.opt_out_flag) {
do_something();
}
but even in cases without opt_out_flag the above expression returns true. Obviously I'm missing something, but what is it?

I have a picture on the stage that has multiple items that have hotspots/links over them that should open a child swf on top of the background and show details about the items. then have a button in the child swf itself that removes the child from over the background so the user can click on another item etc.I found this code in someone's post and I am trying to modify it so that works for multiple swf files...it currently works for a single swf.I wan to pass the name of the button in front of the .swf in the URLRequest to have the same name as the instance name of the referring button. But I can't figure it out. Here is the code I am using on the stage

I'm trying to take a variable from the parent movieclip and use it in the child movieclip inside of a dynamic text field.

I'm completely lost at the moment and know that my code is probably completely wrong.

var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,onLoaded);
loader.load(new URLRequest("../SC/FLA_cont-btn.php"));
