ActionScript 3.0 :: Root Variable Not Accessible In Child Layers

Dec 2, 2010

I got a variable "VideoFolder" well defined in my root level. However when I used this variable directly in child layers, my script does not recognize it and I get error 1120: Access of undefined property VideoFolder. I tried changing VideoFolder with _root.VideoFolder in all my child layers scripts, but it changes nothing.

Movie Clips - Layers On Root Timeline?

Feb 28, 2010

I have only been using FLASH CS3 for a little under a month. I have messed about with it to create some basic stuff. However recently I started on a bit of a larger project. I 'm by no means an expert in FLASH CS3 or AS3.My problem -I created a .FLA file that has seven movie clips on the main timeline, each in its own layer. These are listed below in the order they appear within the main time line.

layer ------------ movie clip
ON -------------- on_mc
RIM ------------- rim_mc
NAV-------------- coverbase_mc
PLAYER---------- player_mc
MAIN------------- main_mc
NAMEBOX------- shellname_mc
BASE------------ Base_mc

The art work for these was all imported from adobe photoshop. They all only have one frame on the main timeline. Each movie clip though has its own internal time line and some have further nested movie clips within them. The issue occurs within the NAV layer/coverbase_mc. I placed a movie clip(to act as a button) within coverbase_mc. This movie clip is called navbut_mc.Now, I already have a couple of similar movie clips, that act as buttons, in on_mc and rim_mc these work as I intended them to. However navbut_mc does not work at all in its current position. I get no errors at all on testing the movie but the action that I want it to do does not work even buttonmode = true; will not work on it.

However, if I use the same movie clip in the rim.mc, but obviously give it a seperate instance name (start_mc), then it works as intended. I have looked at various diffrent things but have to admit i'm stummped. Its almost as if when its in coverbase_mc its being hidden by the clips above it, if thats possible. The reasons I need it to work in coverbase_mc are for a) the overall look of the project b)I have some other buttons in that location that need to work from there.

Flex :: Variable Accessible For All .mxml Files

Oct 4, 2011

Im using Oracle, BlazeDS, Java & Flex. I have an ArrayCollection containing data from a small database table. This table won't be the subject of much change. I want to use this ArrayCollection accross different mxml files to fill e.g. ComboBoxes etc. The reason for asking, is that doing a database call for each time a fill a ComboBox etc is slow and seems unnecessary. I tried doing this once in the "main" .mxml file, but then the variable wasn't accessible where i needed it. What is the best approach for accomplishing this task? What is the best way of making a variable accesible across .mxml files?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Make A Variable Accessible In More Than One Frame

Feb 9, 2010

I noticed that I can not find a way to make a variable accessible in more than one frame. My issue here is that for instance if I have a game and frame 1 has the game and frame 2 has the win screen and I want the win screen to display a score, I don't know how to do it. So the variable from frame 1 which holds the display can't be acessed in frame 2. I understand how to use OOP proggramming and classes, but you need an instance of that class to hold the variable, and It seems I can't cross-frame acess objects either. (I understand I could use a global variable, I don't know how to do this but I know most people don't.

Flash Layers Move To Right When Child Object Is Resized

Jun 10, 2009

I am having a problem with a flash piece that I created. I don't understand why it is doing what it is doing. I am new to flash but I have been developing software and database applications for over 10 years.I am trying to make a horizontal scroller piece that reads in data from an xml document. So basically the XML has properties of image, title, and link, I then load the images and titles into an object spaced out properly and link the image to open a new window when the image is clicked. I have 4 layers:

1. Actions
2. Buttons
3. Layer1
4. Scroller

The buttons layer has 2 buttons on it, one left aligned and one right aligned. When you mouse over the buttons, the images in the scroller move the direction the button image is pointing. The Scroller Layer has an object of type scroller (which i made) and that scroller instance name is scrollerbar. In actionscript I use a sprite object to load the image and then use scrollerbar.addChild(photo) to add the sprite into the scrollerbar. Then I set it's width, height, x and y to be in the correct position. Now when this first runs, it works displays 6 images and titles and they are linked, and has a button on the left and right. When I mouseover either of the buttons, everything gets moved to the right, the buttons, the scroller, and all the images inside the scroller. So the left button is no longer against the left side, and you can hardly see the right button because it almost gets pushed outside the viewable area. Can anyone explain why everything is getting pushed over like that? It only happens the first time you mouse over a button, subsequent mouseovers of either button do not cause this to happen again.[code]

ActionScript 3.0 :: Test If Code Is Executing From Root Or From A Child Mc?

Jun 17, 2009

How can I test if my AS3 code is executing from root or from a child mc that has been imported into a larger project via the loader class? Details:I've got a tutorial that is published both as a standalone projector (exe) and as an swf imported at runtime into a larger project. If the tutorial is running by itself as a standalone projector it needs to execute a few fscommands and perform some other housekeeping chores. If the tutorial is running as a child of the larger project these chores must be skipped. I canâ't test Capabilities.playerType because the parent can also run as a standalone projector. It's simple, but here's what I had before I realized the parent might also be standalone:

ActionScript 3.0 :: Nested Child Calling Root Parent Function ?

Jul 18, 2010

I'm switching from as2 to as3 and everything was going swimmingly with my new site until i tried to use a _root call to a function on the main timeline by a loaded movieClip that is loaded nested into 2 other movieclips. the movieClip needs to tell the _root when it's done playing so the root knows to load the next one in line through a php call. Everything works except for the _root call. In as3 there's no such thing as root anymore so I figured no big deal, i'll just find out what the new thing is and holy crap wtf! I can't figure this out!! I've read from doing stuff like custom eventLisnters (which i am trying now) and casting the root as a movieClip and then I read this whole crazy tutorial on building an event structure and the proper MVC way of coding and blah blah blah ALL I WANT TO DO is tell the _root that the loaded MC has reached the end of its timeline. Basically if it were as2 i could just go _root.loadNext(); and it would work.how to make a loaded MC talk to the _root timeline and call a funciton from there?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Root And Document Class For Child SWF Loaded By Parent SWF?

Feb 12, 2011

I'm using a PreLoader as a parent SWF that loads the actual website as a child SWF. In the website SWF, the child SWF, will MovieClip(root) still work and refer to it's own root, or the PreLoader's root? And would I still access the websitite's document class (the child's document class), through MovieClip(root)? What if both files have a document class? So my main question is how do document classes and MovieClip(root) behave in the scenario when you have:

Parent SWF - document class, MovieClip(root)
|
Child SWF (loaded by parent) - document class, MovieClip(root)

ActionScript 3.0 :: How To Target Variable Defined At Root

I want to find out the value of an index of an Array defined on the main timeline, from within a MC on the stage. In AS2.0 this would be as simple as trace(_root.mk_contArray[0]). In AS3.0, naturally something like trace(root.mk_contArray[0]) just doesn't work, nor any other variation I've tried. Is it something to do with addChild()? This instance is named, but I haven't used that method.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Passing Variable From Root Timeline Into MC?

I'm guessing this is pretty simple, I just can't find the solution through my google searches.

Bascially I created a variable and gave it a value in the first frame of my main timeline.

Now I just want to pass that variable into a MovieClip. When I trace the value of the variable within the movieClip I get undefined.

Is there something else I have to do to make it recognize the root timeline's variable?
