ActionScript 3.0 :: Use A Variable In Root For Nested Movieclip?
Jun 10, 2009
I want to use the same movieclip different times (different instances). The only thing that has to change in this movieclip is a string. I tried to solve this creating a variable.To be more concrete, on root timeline i have Code:var RespJpeg:String = "bandlang2.jpg"and inside the movieclip (actually inside a movieclip in a movieclip in a movieclip in a movieclip: 4level nested) i have
Code:
loadImage("RespJpeg")
This obviously didn't work. What i tried was the following:
I have a movie clip on my main timeline that I want to send to a certain frame based on a variable that can be set from a nested movie clip, and also set from an external swf that will be loaded into the main timeline.So how would I set that variable? In AS2, I would just go _parent._parent...as many levels up as I needed to, but the AS3 equivalent only seems to work one level up.
Does anyone know the best method to trigger a function in the root from a dynamically loaded movieclip (loaded using addchild) using AS3, I understand targeting root is not the best way to do this?
"newbie" is the name of the var ( a URL )and the trace function works ... so that being said i know the function has access to the variable the problem is w the
Code: URLRequest( MovieClip(root).newbie )how can i get this to evaluate as a URL ...
heres the error i get:
TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert "http://www.yourfacesucks.com/newbishness" to flash.net.URLRequest.

I have a main swf file (basically, a movie player), which, for the most part, just loads swf files into a container object and plays them.The nested clips are typically just straight movies that start at frame one and just play to the end, then another clip is loaded.However, some of the nested clips are interactive (games and such) that have alot of actionscript (2.0) within them.Now the problem is that, within the nested clips, _root objects are referenced, however, when the clips are loaded into the main swf container, the _root references the _root of the container, rather than the _root of the nested clip.I figured out that I can replace the _root references with something like _root.container.xxxx, but when I do that the nested clips don't work as a stand-alone (which isn't really necessary, but is easier to test without having to first load into the container swf). So, is there a property I can set that will differentiate between a _root reference within a nested clip as opposed to a _root reference in the container clip?
I'm switching from as2 to as3 and everything was going swimmingly with my new site until i tried to use a _root call to a function on the main timeline by a loaded movieClip that is loaded nested into 2 other movieclips. the movieClip needs to tell the _root when it's done playing so the root knows to load the next one in line through a php call. Everything works except for the _root call. In as3 there's no such thing as root anymore so I figured no big deal, i'll just find out what the new thing is and holy crap wtf! I can't figure this out!! I've read from doing stuff like custom eventLisnters (which i am trying now) and casting the root as a movieClip and then I read this whole crazy tutorial on building an event structure and the proper MVC way of coding and blah blah blah ALL I WANT TO DO is tell the _root that the loaded MC has reached the end of its timeline. Basically if it were as2 i could just go _root.loadNext(); and it would work.how to make a loaded MC talk to the _root timeline and call a funciton from there?
I am using a nested template by following the normal practice of creating a template, which I will call "core" and then creating a page from that template and saving it as a "nested" template. So far so good, except, when I update the "core" template, it only updates the .dwt template files that I created from the core template. It doesn't update any of my content pages that were created from the "nested" templates, that were of course based on the core template. I can go into each nested template and then it updates the corresponding pages, but it just seems like updating the core should do all associated nested templates. Is this the way it is supposed to work?
I am building a small banner, which ideally will have a random string of text fade in (long enough to be read), then fade out...to play another random text.
Each of my texts have been built as movie clips... they fade in, stay up long enough to be read, then fade out. At the end of this, I need the movie to go back to frame 1 of the main timeline, as I am using the following script:
Code: _root.onLoad = function() { //generate a random number from 1 to 11 var nRandom = 1+Math.floor(Math.random()*12); //tell timeline to goto and play the random number 'nRandom' gotoAndPlay(nRandom); };
Each of my text movie clips are on a different frame, so I need to call a new random _root frame to play from within the movie clips. So far, all that is happening is whichever movie is chosen to play, goes in a loop.
I'm sorry if this post breaks forum conventions, but I searched and didn't find a solution in past posts.
I'm writing a function that highlights components of the animation I've created.
It does this by creating a white box on top of the entire stage, tweening it's alpha value from 0 to 80, and creating a new instance of the movie clip to be highlighted on top of that white box.
I run into a problem when I need to highlight components that are movie clips nested within ones on the top/root level.
When I duplicate instances of nested movie clips, they just exist within the movie they were nested in.
I want to pull those duplicated, nested movie clips into the root area so it rests on top of that white box I just mentioned. How do I take a nested movie clip and pull it out of it's parent onto the top/root level?
when I attach an mc inside another movie clip and then during interaction with the movie change the _x of that parent clip to whatever other value than original location, the _x of the child mc does not change as it regards its position in relation to the parent - moving the parent does not move the child within it how do i find the _x of the child in relation to the _root though as opposed to the relation to its parent?
For some reason, the same code works now, without any problem at all. I don't know what happened, or why, but I no longer have this problem Here's the original post: To put simply, I created a MovieClip, put it with addChild() to stage, and when I tried to call this piece of code:
I have a button in the frame 1 when i clicked it,it goes to the nextframe in nextframe i have movie clip named "circle". in frame 1 in action layer i have variable named "i" it has a number equal 20; now i'm in "circle" movieclip in the action layer i want to write a command for checking "i" if it's equal 20 the "circle" movieclip play but i can't find "i" how can i access to "i" variable in frame 1 ?
How do you align a dynamic movie clip position with another movie clip which is in the root stage? I tried to get the mc in root x,y position, but the starting point of the class that loads the dynamic MC does not seems to be accurate. (Meaning at the root stage, the x,y is 0,0 but at the dynamic class, its somewhere like 100,20 for the browser area (and it actually vary base on the browser size))
**the other classes I used to run the custom classes below, I have it added this MC to stage
var blocker:stageBlocker=new stageBlocker(); this.stage.addChild(blocker);
Below is the dynamic MC. Should I not add it to its own "stage"?
public class stageBlocker extends MovieClip { private var blocker:MovieClip= new MovieClip(); public function stageBlocker():void {
I get a variable from a PHP like: "MyMessage". But I need to put this textfield on an MC, could you tell me what I need to do to lead this variable into the MC? (In a graphic object works ok but I need MC to control its X, Y).
I know nothing about flash. I only need to change a few variables in a swf file. the swf file uses ../ for root directory, so, when I play this swf from other places than its designed directory, it will querry wrong URL.Edit: the swf are in this directory:root/domain/content/swfthe swf file has some ../url to querry files under the content directoryroot/domain/content/stuffs/items/filesIf I play the swf in another directory, for example, root/domain/topics/stories/jokes/then, the swf will querry root/domain/topics/stories/jokes/files, this is wrong. So I want to use a fixed expression to replace ../
This is an example of the kind of issue I'm trying to solve. Say I'm looking to set 10 text fields (text_field_1 to text_field_10) within my movie clip 'myMovieClip' to the value of i. Now if the for loop and the text fields are in the place (_root) all I would have to do is:
Am I not targeting it properly?Alternatively, I've tried storing the flashvars URL in a variable in my root SWF and accessing it from the loaded SWF, but I can't seem to grab it. How would I grab a variable that is declared in my root SWF?
I want to find out the value of an index of an Array defined on the main timeline, from within a MC on the stage. In AS2.0 this would be as simple as trace(_root.mk_contArray[0]). In AS3.0, naturally something like trace(root.mk_contArray[0]) just doesn't work, nor any other variation I've tried. Is it something to do with addChild()? This instance is named, but I haven't used that method.
I got a variable "VideoFolder" well defined in my root level. However when I used this variable directly in child layers, my script does not recognize it and I get error 1120: Access of undefined property VideoFolder. I tried changing VideoFolder with _root.VideoFolder in all my child layers scripts, but it changes nothing.
I have a movie embedded and I am passing a variable to the root movie for it to play when the embedded movie is complete. I know the variable is getting passed because I am displaying the value in as dynamic text but the parent movie will not play. This is what I have:
i am using a movieclip who has two nested movieclips, the problem i am dealing is that when i try to get the width or height of the parent movieclip it always showing the values of the small nested movieclip, when i draw the movieclip it draw perfect but when i read this values shows that error, what can i do?
I want to apply actions to a movieClip nested inside a dynamicly attached movieClip, with the attachMovie method; it doesn't works when the movieClip is attached by a button:
1.when the swf movie loads with an attachMovie method the remove_btn clears the window_mc
I'm trying to do a cleaning of some classes that is added into a MovieClip, but I can't seems to set the MovieClip(Class) to null. What is the proper way to do it?
private var mcHolder:MovieClip = new MovieClip()[code].................
I've never had to deal with a mc inside of an mc this way before... Basically they're already on the stage and creating them dynamically would require recreating everything.... Not worth it.
Code: //14 total for (var i:Number = 0; i < 14; i++){
