ActionScript 3.0 :: Capturing X,y Coordinates For Two Objects?
Mar 29, 2010
I have two columns of objects on stage, one on the left side column (A) and one on the right side (column B). Each column has 3 objects in it. For this quiz I want the user to be able to draw a line from each object in column A to the corresponding object in column B.To do this I need to capture the xy coordinates of the first object that the user clicks on and then capture the coordinates of the 2nd object the user clicks on so that I can draw a line between the two of them. Drawing the line is no problem but how do I capture the coordinates of the first object selected and then the 2nd object selected? This is as far as I've got with the code.
var clip:Shape = new Shape()
var startX=0
var startY=0

I have a MovieClip on my stage. Inside the MovieClip there are a few buttons (all MovieClips also) and a mask layer to keep anything on the outside invisible.
Problem: My MouseEvent fires and should move objectA into position over objectB. All code in the script tells me it has moved. Tracing the x,y coordinates of objectA also tells me it has moved. The Alpha on objectA is 100% and it is positioned on the topmost layer beneath the mask layer. All this tells me that when the object moves, it should be visible on the stage (the event moves the object into the masked area). Testing disproves everything. The traces all tell me the object is where it is supposed to be but it cannot be seen. I don't understand this and it, amongst other AS3 hiccups, is seriously turning me off Flash as it seems to be a waste of time to try and learn as it seems like 90% of the scripts written will fail 90% of the time.

My stage contains an object that contains a child. The child sees it's x and y position in relation to it's parent, so when the object moves, the coordinates remain the same.
How do i get a child's coordinates relative to the stage?

I get the feeling the title is misleading... What I try to achieve is quite simple (at least it sounds like a simple thing to do). I am trying to find the intersection of 2 objects in relation to each other. One of them is the character for my game, and the other is the obstacle (the floor, a barrel, etc). I need to find the coordinates of the character in relation to the obstacle. Here's a picture to make it a bit clearer:
Here the coordinates (and the cross) represent the origin of my objects, and the two squares are my character (twice to better represent the multiple possibilities). The number after the slash for the square is what I should get as the .x when my character hits the obstacle. I tried using getBounds(), but I really don't know about it and tried stuff based on the little knowledge I have about it (I won't post the code here, first it was horrible, and it also didn't survive the rage I had trying to get this to work...).

I'm in the process of making a board game in Flash; as part of process of getting fully to grips with Flash AS3.
I have a JPEG of the original board. This contains ~ 1000 circles that players may move pieces between. Pretty standard board-game stuff. The circles are not in any way regularly spaced.
So far, I've drawn the circles in Flash, by hand, and positioned them where they need to be. This looks great - I can see all my places.
What I want to do now is create these circles programatically. I want to be able to do this so I can adjust how the spaces look (depending on game state). Eventually I'll want to be able to zoom / pan the entire game board as well.
My question is, is there a way of tagging each circle with a unique reference and then looping through and recording locations?
I'm thinking something a bit like the Javascript DOM "getElementsByTagName" or similar.
At the moment I can only see two options:
Convert each circle to a symbol and give it a unique class name so I can access it from code Go through and write down the X/Y of each circle (add to my DB of board locations that I already have) so I can plot them programatically

I am looking to create an animation (perhaps frame by frame) that corresponds with the coordinates of an object. Specifically, I want to have a draggable object's coordinates (locked to the x-axis) indicate where the playhead of a specific movie clip should be. In other words, let's say that I have a 100px wide stage and I want each px location of an object on that stage to correspond to a particular frame of a movieclip. In concept, I feel that it should be as easy as loading an objects coordinates into a variable, then passing that variable on with a simple math equation, adjusting it for movieclip length... but right about then my brain gets fried. Finding out how to lock a draggable object to the x-axis has been pretty easy, but from there I'm stumped. I'm not particularly well versed in AS3 but I do like to think I understand the concepts.

Is there a way to check an objects x,y coordinates based on where it is on the stage, vs. where it is in the movie clip that is on the stage?
need this to compare with the mouse for instance.

is it possible for flash to detect off-stage mouse coordinates in order to continuously drag an object within its bounds while the mouse is moving outside of the stage? for example: i have a draggable red square on my stage. the stage is the bounds of the drag. if i drag the red square to the bottom of the stage and continue to drag outside of and around the stage, i'd like the red square to continue moving within it's bounds, following the mouse coordinates. currently, dragging halts as soon as i leave the stage and the red square only begins to move with the mouse coordinates if i reenter the stage bounds.

I'm building a dynamic content page in flash that consists of using attachMovieClip and createEmptyMovieClip with coordinates to place photos and objects, which are loaded from an external source and scrolling their thumbnails I've run into a problem setting the variables correctly because the scrolling thumbnails required that the thumbnails be nested inside a scrolling controller clip and that has somehow messed up my preloading and sequential text caption loading for the tumbnails.

I was trying to convert global coordinates to local coordinates of a UIComplenent in my flex project using below code using below code
var gp:Point = new Point(e.stageX,e.stageY); //global point
var lp:Point = uic.globalToLocal(gp); //local point
uic is UIComponent in which I have subclass of Sprite for drawing something I have set the sprite's mouseEnabled and mouseChildren to false to not interrupt the mouse event. above code is within uic's mousemove event where I was tracing the gp and lp gp was giving correct value and suprisingly lp was giving negetive values. when I move the move to the top left corner of uic i expect lp to be 0,0 but it is giving the -width of of uic. I broke my head for hours and ended up finding an alternate by using offsets. Infact my original code was much simpler like this which was same issue
var lp:Point = new Point(e.localX,e.localY);
I am not sure what exactly is causing this problem. the workaround had lot of issues and it creating a mess in my rest of the algorithms.Just now I found even more interesting thing (which is actually weird). for some reason I went and create a new lp2
var lp2:Point = new Point(e.localX,e.localY);
now surprisingly it was giving correct values as expected and I went back and changed the code as
var gp:Point = new Point(e.stageX,e.stageY); //global point
var lp:Point = uic.globalToLocal(gp); //local point
var lp2:Point = new Point(e.localX,e.localY);
var lp2:Point = uic.globalToLocal(gp);
now it is expected to have all the lp, lp2 and lp3 variables to be same but weiredly lp two is giving wrong value and lp2 and lp3 were giving correct. I am suspecting using the variable lp has something to do. I am not sure about that but above proves it so right now I am using lp2.

I was reading the 'Isometric Transformations' tutorial by Danko Kozar and I have a few questions. I understand what all the code does, but not how it does it. First of all, how does the following code work:
transforms x,y,z coordinates into Flash x coordinate
xFla = function (x, y, z) {
// cartesian coordinates[code].....
I understand that it converts 3d coordinates to 2d coordinates, but I don't understand how. What numbers whould be punched into x, y, and z to acquire certain desired effects?Also, what's the difference between moveTo and lineTo:
red line
style(1, "0xFF0000", 100);
plot(0, 0, 0);
draw(200, 0, 0);

Is there a how-to I can follow to help me in selecting technologies and in implementing my solution? the exact behaviour I would like to implement is as follows:
1) page loads
2) webcam starts recording
3) user hits button
4) webcam stops recording
5) video is stored on my server
I have an MVC3 app I need to enhance with video capture functionality. I don't yet understand all the pieces involved but it seems I may have to choose between Flash (which is not supported on iPhones and iPads) and Silverlight.it also seems I need a server-side component like the Flash Media Server. Honestly I'm overwhelmed with all the choices (having to learn ActionScript, Flex, what not).it just occurred to me: if anyone's come across a service that will manage the process for me, that too would be very cool. I'm thinking that maybe someone out there (haven't found them yet but maybe it's a matter of poor keywords) has servers and offers a url I could use in an iframe to have them capture the video for me

There is a way to capture the list of parameters passed to SWF? Suppose that I have the following url:
Code:
mymovie.swf?level=1&score=100&23764826347
I would like to capture:
level
score
23764826347
Not the contents, but the NAME of the parameters!
This way, I can, for instances, pass a parameter that be the value itself, such as a code, like this:
Code:
mymovie.swf?427642833467

I am trying to do an image capture while in full screen, however the full image area is only partially captured, or the coordinates are off (see images below). The document size is 100x700, and the stage is set not to scale / aligned to bottom.I've been able to capture the right size, however it always seems to capturing the image from the wrong start x,y position. There is some elements out of bounds but I am just trying to clip them depending on the current stage width and height. In the source files you will see a few of my attempts commented off (below/attached).Fullscreen Capture :Normal Capture :

I have a Flash application in which I would like the user to scroll a UI element by moving the scroll wheel on the mouse. My problem is that the Flash application is embedded in an iframe that also has scroll bars. So when I use the scroll wheel, even when the mouse is above the Flash application, both the Flash application scrolls (like it should) but the webpage also scrolls, which I would like to avoid.
So is there some way to avoid this behavior? Can the flash application capture the mouse so that hte events no longer bubble up to the containing page?

I am currently doing Augmented Reality. I got my marker to detect my model but my problem now is how to screen capture the content that is in swf. (As in capture the dae model shown in the comp not from webcam.)
& also i just want to capture the swf window not the whole desktop.I read online, they say its impossible?
Or is it possible to call screen capture function in javascript to flash CS4? (LIke external data)
(Moreover, does anyone know how to detect multiple dae models with different markers?)

I know there have been similar threads in the past but I can't seem to find a decent definitive answer / workaround for the problem I'm facing.What I'm trying to do: capture ALT+SHIFT+something keyboard events. Pretty straightforward, right?
Issue: When pressing ALT+SHIFT doesn't seem to ever shoot an event. The only combination that seems to work with ALT is CTRL+ALT +something, as pointed out here.
Question: I've read that the browser catches some of the keyboard events, but this happens with the basic flash player too - maybe that catches events too? Would love to know if there is a solution that doesn't involve messing with JS.

I have a movieclip on stage. Its 500x400. It has many children of diffent sizes added to it. How can I capture the area 300x200 of the movieclip from (0,0). Suppose there was a child at (100,100) of width and height 300 then I should be able to see from this child from 100 to 300 and 100 to 200 respectively. The rest of the area is not needed. I should be able to manipulate the captured image later. So I guess I have to capture it as a Bitmap. But how can this thing be done.

I am using flash to control a toy rc car transmitter via an arduino microcontroller. I have written the code for the basic direction controls (see below). I would like to add more funtionality though by recording keypress times and have the car run through a set of movements at the click of a button. I guess I would have to use the timer class to measure the time of and inbetween the keypresses. No idea of where to star though.[code]
