ActionScript 3.0 :: Child Of A Movieclip Object To Not Inherit The Paren'ts Properties?
Jul 11, 2009
Is there a way for the child of a movieclip object to not inherit the paren'ts properties? Because I scaled down the parent movieclip height and width and I'm loading external images into the parent movieclip and images are also scaled as well so I'm wondering if there is a way for it not to inherit the properties but remain inside the parent?
I notice in actionscript 3 that when a handler gets called, its able to access the senders properties. If I dispatch an event from my custom class. can all the listeners inherit all my public properties and methods?
Ok every time I think I understand the DisplayObject model i find something else that seems like it should work but fails. Am I correct that if I create a sprite then create another sprite and add it as a child the original parent sprite will show a height of 0... In my case i have three classes that all extend Sprite and each one is creating the next with the "youngest child" being a class that adds an image to its "stage". I can see the image height fine but its holder does not nor does its holders parent... im having a real moment here as I debate if im just stupid and missing the obvious way to do this or if I really have to add a bunch of getters and setters to see the height that includes children.Maybe I am thinking of this too much like a CSS block element but it just seems like it should work this way...for example
I'm loading an image into a blank_mc within a movieclip called 'background_mc' using the MovieClipLoader object; when the onLoadInit for the MovieClipLoader object is fired, i then attempt to clone my 'backgound_mc' object and the loaded image it contains so i can do something with it (i,e a funky masky/blur thing, not important right now)I'm successfully loading my image into the blank clip within background_mc, the onLoadInit behaviour fires and duplicates background_mc once the image has been loaded, but in a disappointing turn of events, my clone of background_mc no longer has an image attached, and has instead reverted back to it's original form, just as ti was before it had the jpeg image loaded in.
I have saved out an object using JSON.encode to a text file, is it possible to then create a new MovieClip and populate it with all of the properties from the saved file? If so how would it be done, or is there a better way
I am trying to build a class that inherits from the MovieClip class.Basically I am having issues in the constructor. Since MC's are unique in that they can only be created via createEmptyMovieClip or attachMovieClip, I am at a loss as to how you instantiate the inheriting class in the .fla? I figured if I just left the constructor out of the new class and do the following it would work but is doesn't:[code]How do I inherit from the MovieClip class and still instatiate the class using the above type actionScript?I have seen alot of information about inheritance and AS1.0 (which I have little understanding of). I am trying to stick to OOP practices and AS2.0. I searched for things like super & constructor to no avail.
how I would go about creating a new instance of a class that inherits from the MovieClip class. Rather, I know how to adjust linkage properties inside the library, and can create new instances that way.... but my main problem is that a good number of times I find I want to create a new instance using the Constructor function, which is chock full of parameters that I use inside the class. I currently have a class called MenuButton, and if I use Linkage properties, I can make it all work just fine... But I also have a class called Menu, which arranges those MenuButtons... by creating them using MenuButton's Constructor. According to my code, these instances are created... but they are not visible and do not show up in the debugger.
i'm attempting to cast an object's property as an actual property of another object. here's my object variable: var propObj:Object = {prop:"width", width:50}; now i want to assign the property of a sprite using that object's properties. var sp:Sprite = new Sprite(); sp.(propObj.prop as Sprite.property) = propObj.width; now, i'm not even going to try that because i know the compiler will explode all up in my face. but you should be able to see what i'm trying to do. why i'm trying to do it is because i'm reading in an XML file with an undetermined list of usable properties for specific objects. so instead of writing something like a huge switch statement to evaluate whether the XML file has a value for that specific property, i'm trying to assign properties dynamically based on what's available in the XML file. if what i'm trying to do is possible, what's the best way to do it?
I'm a beginner to Action Script and I'm going through the lessons in the Adobe Classroom in a Book. I cannot get past this one code line error: Expecting identifier before a right paren. Of course I'm just copying what the book is giving me to do the lesson. I have already come across a line of code that is wrong in the book, so now I'm thinking this line may be wrong as well.
I forgot to put it in the title so I'll just place it here; I am using AS 2.0. I know that there are other ways to accomplish the goal that am after, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to access the properties of an object's properties?
Here is the code that I thought of, even though it doesn't work
var a:Object = new Object(); a.bproperty = 0; //lowerlevel properties a.cproperty = 1; // lowerlevel properties
[Code].....
This really just boils down to how I am organizing the code(I have ideas on what do next, and i am 99% sure that I can get them to work), and if there is a way to dynamically access the properties of the objects properties, It will save me from creating yet another large block of code for my project. i have a parent movieclip mcA and i want to add another movieclip mcB (child movieclip) inside mcA such that the extra part of mcB is hidden. The size of movieclip remains same as of mcA
For ex:-
mcA = 300x300 mcB = 400x400
then only 300x300 of mcB movieclip is visible and rest of the part is hidden.
I have some code that adds a child using addChild(dragsquare); dragsquare is what I used as the class for a movieclip, mcsquare.
Everytime a child is added to the stage, it is called: ObjectX The "X" increments everytime a new object is added using ++objNum.
E.g:
Object1 Object2 Object3
etc...
When the child is added to the stage, it can be dragged, resized, rotated, etc...
I have used this code so when someone clicks the "save" button it loops through all objects on stage (increasing the last number by 1 to get the next object) and finding their properties. Here is the code I have used.
ActionScript Code:
Code: save.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, saveObjects); function saveObjects(event:MouseEvent):void { for (var i:uint=0; i<numChildren-23; i++) {
[Code]....
23 children already exist on stage so I have to minus that number to get whatever is added on stage by the user.
However, scaleX is getting the childs ORIGINAL properties and not its current stage properties (where it has been resized, rotated etc..) and only returns a 1 for scaleX. How would I make it track the properties it has on stage?
I have an Movie Clip in Flash that have subobject of button type which has subobject of input text and movie clips. Right after creation core Moveclip all subobject are set to null, when I expect them to be valid objects.
[Code]...
MC_Core_design was created in Flash and exported to Actionscript. I've done this for button_1 class aswell. The code was written using Flex. When I comment out both lines that result in error I get correct view of the core Movie clip with all subobject. How can I set subobject properties right after object creation?
In Flex, how do you best manage child collection property changes, specifically notifying a parent object that a property within the child collection has changed.
package { [Bindable] public class Author
[Code]....
How can I notify the Author when a Book propery has changed and update the dateOfFirstBookPublished method?
Allright, i receive a string and want to convert it to object. here a test that i have made:
[code]....
this work pretty fine... but i am receiving the object property as follow: "{a:'test',b:'testAgain'}" How can i easily convert it to object properties?
Basically, I have a menu created using XML. Each menu item has a fill that fades in and out as the user scrolls over them. What I want to happen is that when an item is clicked, it stays highlighted. The problem comes when I click on the second item. I can't get the first item to "unselect."Here is the menu code and functions.
Code: var menuHolder:MovieClip = new MovieClip(); menuHolder.x = myMask.x;
I have a holder movieclip on screen, then I create a loader, load an external SWF into the loader and addChild to my holder:
var bgloader1:Loader = new Loader(); [code].....
This all works. Now if I want to come back later on and alter the alpha or position I get an error:
//Neither of these work: MyHolder1.bgloader1.alpha=0; MyHolder1.bgloader1.content.alpha=0;
TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties. at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEventFunction() at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEvent() at flash.net::URLLoader/onComplete()
I'm basically loading an XML file to assign instances of a movie clip a distinct value, which it uses to modify its height. So, I'm looping through the xml and instantiating my class Object each time (Rect) and then placing that Object into an array:
Code: function loadXML(loaded){ if(loaded){ var boxArray:Array; xmlNode = this.firstChild;
[code]....
the trace here always comes up undefined. "listPosition" in this bit is an Rect parameter, defined in the previous bit of code as "i", so I can keep track of the order of the stack.I've found one or two examples of putting objects into an array and getting them back out, but it doesn't seem to work with this, maybe because I'm using a class. I don't know.Could this be an area where I need to use the array access brackets, like around the movie clip the object is loaded into. I've tried everything I can think of -- referencing back to the movieclip, adding extra objectRef type parameters... nothing has worked yet.
I have created a loop to instantiate tiles on a board. In the following example, "Gametiles" is an array containing objects of class "Tile" which is a class that extends MovieClip. "Game" is a MC that I added to the stage in the flash developing environment.[code]This method is a bit cumbersome though. I really don't want to have to create a var and call getChildByName every time I want to interact with these properties or methods. How can I set up these children so that I can access them directly without the extra steps?
My player movie clip has a smaller movieclip within it. Because the smaller movieclip is not within the parent clip it changes the x,y,width,and height value of the player movieclip and throwing everything off! To adjust I have to add (-2ndmovieclip.height) to everything i want to do. This is sloppy and I don't like it. Is there a better way to have a child within a movieclip without it affecting the parents properties? i want the parent to keep its original x,y,width,and height properties but the child keeps adding to them!
i've got an inheritance chain of AS2 classes set up where i have an array in the 'child' class that i'd like to be able to access from the 'parent' class:
bottomClass.as -'parent' topClass.as -'child'
my question/dilemma is: how can the parent access the properties of a child class...is this even possible, or am i just looking at it wrong?

I'm attempting to use "if" statements to determine if an dynamically loaded photo is portrait or landscape. The problem I'm having is when I try "gallery_mc.getChildAt(0).width", it returns 0.
