ActionScript 3.0 :: Drawing From Bitmap To Bitmap Overrides Earlier Graphics?
Dec 29, 2010
I'm working on a game, and to keep performance good, instead of addChild'ing 50 new sprites to the stage every second, I decided to have each player draw to their own bitmap, and then to the 'master' bitmap. This introduces an issue though: the second player would override all data the first player has put into to bitmap...My basic debugging proof of concept:
Code:
// bitmap test
import flash.display.Bitmap;
import flash.display.Bitmap;[code]......

Is it possible to draw a Bitmap to a Graphics-Object like
this.graphics.beginBitmapFill(bitmapData, matrix, false);
this.graphics.drawRect(0, 0, w, h);
this.graphics.endFill();
with an offset?
A simple moveTo(x, y) call before beginBitmapFill does not work :/ Neither does changing the x and y value of drawRect... (That just seems to have the same effect as an translation with the matrix...) Additionally I don't want do draw that thing in a separate Graphics-Object and add that one into the other...

I have this RPG-like screen where you have a character walking through.. the forest or something.. and the thing is.. it's lagging.. LOTS..On that scene.. there are quite a lot of Tree graphics and grass graphics.. I've tested this and apparently graphics run a lot smoother than movieclips with bitmap caching on..Also.. My character has lots of different hair styles all put into one movieclip.. and i thought that by removing them all.. and just have a attachMovie() script to pull in the appropriate hairstyle clips.. it would go faster..but apparently it doesn't seem to of made much difference..what other ways can i reduce the lag on flash?

i have found a beautiful water effect made in as3. The effect is available to download on the website below.I am trying to change the fill of the water (that is blue or any color that you pick).The original code fills the water like this:
Code:
public function renderWater():void {
shape.grapics.clear();
shape.graphics.beginFill(0x006699);
shape.graphics.lineStyle(0, 0x000000, 0);
[code].....
I tried to follow the instructions on the beginBitmapFill help, but i am receiving the water with no fill.

I'm having trouble getting bitmap graphics from Photoshop to import crisply into Flash. I use the highest quality PNG codec, but graphics appear jaggy once they're in Flash.getting crisp graphics into Flash?My stage sizes are 992 x 692 or smaller, and I'm viewing at 100%, so, not expecting graphics to be sharp and clean at maximum magnification...

today i started some particle generator class that will move particles over the stage via drawing in a Bitmap. Everything works well with low amount of particles, lets say 1000, but for my surprise when i added 10 000 particles the frame rate dropped drastically. And i am saying that since i made the same particle generator using MovieClips instead of drawing in Bitmap, the performance test i run on both classes showed that the Bitmap class with 10K particles on my PC works in around 10-12 FPS, and the MovieClip variation in around 20-21 FPS with the same amount of particles. The particles are identical and both classes are using linked list system to move the particles. So the only logical conclusion is that something is not right with the drawing function.
Code:
private function drawParticles(e:Event):void{
// clearing the _pZone Bitmap of the previous data
_pZone.bitmapData.fillRect(_pZone.bitmapData.rect,0);
_pZone.bitmapData.draw(_blankMc);

Basically, I have a BitmapData object which is acting as a virtual screen.
I have a MovieClip which I want to render to the bitmap using the same transformation as though the bitmap were the screen. However, the MovieClip is not attached directly to the root
The BitmapData.draw() method takes a Matrix as an optional parameter, which I think I need to set as the MovieClip's localToGlobal transformation matrix. However, I don't know how to obtain or construct this!

As the heading dictates, i want to place bitmap files on the faces of the 3D object that i have created.Basically i found this tutorial code on a 3D rotating cube that is able to be rotated by the mouse. I have modified it to change its shape from a cube to a 'plane' or rectangular style object.

Over the weekend i put together an MP3 player in Flex and just managed to figure out the SoundSpectrum.
It is working as expected.
I am facing problems when it comes to using a bitmap.
Right now, my "Analyser" class pulls the data from SoundMixer.computerSpectrum.
I then use that data with the drawing API to create a simple analyser. You know, just spikes.
Here is the code for that part:
Code:
private function update(e:TimerEvent): void
{
SoundMixer.computeSpectrum(ba, true);
var n:Number = 0;
[Code]....
Ok using common sense here, I am telling flash to take a snapshot of the Analyser and draw it to the bitmapData.
However, i cant seem to get this working. I am not using the dispose() method to clear the bitmap so id expect to see a mess of points (similar to if i removed the g.clear()) but nothing happens.

I'm trying to use a bitmap fill, but I can't seem to get it to work.I'm using FlashDevelop with assets imported from CS4 - this isn't the problem, I can instantiate the asset I'm targeting perfectly fine, so I suspect that it's a problem with what I'm trying to do. Here's my code:
Code:
//get the bitmap data from a grass symbol
//grass symbol IS present - can be added to stage fine
var grassBMD:BitmapData = new BitmapData(155, 80);[code]....
Nothing gets displayed in the box, so I'm suspicious that I'm not allowed to use bitmap fill in non-primitive shapes.

I'm cutting my teeth in actionscript 3 on a game that has a character running through a world. So, I have set up my Hit Testing by using the bitmap data hit test method, since I figured my world is going to be destructible - it'd be nice to update the level and then redraw it and have the character interact with the new change. (That works beautifully) I am however; a bit confused as to how I have my hit Testing set up. I've been messing around with it, and it works for now - but I'm not sure why.. currently, I have a character set up by using a class I built and using a series of animations I created. So, this character has a walking and falling animation, etc. This is a movie clip.
Then there's a bitmap 'emptyBitmap' with bitmap data created - however; I never really added this as a child to the character. This is sized to the dimensions of my character. My level is created as a movielip, then it's drawn to a bitmap - when the level movieclip is changed, the bitmap redraws, and that's how this updates.

I know the topic of "duplicating" movieclips is a hot issue with the new virtual machine. Luckily, I understand the implications. I only am [currently] interested in duplicating a Bitmap. See, I load an image from an URL using 'flash.display.Loader.load', which is a non-blocking operation in Flash Player.However,I may use multiple copies of the loaded image (which is reported to be a Bitmap, naturally) in the display list at the same time.Hence, I naturally do not want to load the image from an URL every time, because I don't want to wait for a non-blocking call to complete. Nor do I need to - I mean one copy is already loaded, so it should be possible to just "duplicate" it, right?
My idea is to do use the bitmapData property of a Bitmap and pass it to the constructor of a new Bitmap object. I have not tried the following in action, but I want to hear whether any of you did and if the following would not work, what would:
Code:
var original_bitmap: Bitmap;
var copy_of_original_bitmap: Bitmap = new Bitmap(original_bitmap.bitmapData);
LiveDocs mention that the BitmapData being passed to a Bitmap constructor is "being referenced", which to me might suggest it cannot be used twice? There is also the BitmapData::clone() method, which I am not sure is applicable here or not.I know this is a lot of talk instead of just trying this out, but I test so much Flash Player code daily just to see "what works" (which should be documented instead by Adobe),

I have a project that is drawing ~10,000 small tiles into one large bitmap container - it's a mosaic. In Flash proper and in FireFox it takes about 20 seconds to complete the drawing. Very acceptable. In Chrome it takes about 1:30 and in IE it takes roughly 3:00 - both too slow to be acceptable to the client - who of course reviewed with IE. I have Flash set to run at 45 fps - and the images are populated by a Timer - at 2 ms intervals. Maybe 2 ms is too fast? But in my testing 1ms was slower as was 3ms, so I kept it at 2. And it works fine in FF and Flash...

If I draw a rectangle or trapezium, how might I go about drawing bitmap data into that shape? I need to give a slight perspective to a loaded photo. Native 3D rotations seem to leave the bitmap really blurry, and a full 3D engine is too heavy for this project.

Is there a way to write a bitmap font right into the bitmap being desplayed? Mabey better worded: myBitmap.draw(image, t) draws a picture is there a way to draw text? I'm stuck even if its just a work around in some way I would like to know... (the current work around i have in my head is writing it in a movieclip turning that into bitmap data and drawing it... esentially creating a prototype answering my question... but a built in way would be easier probably).

In AS3, I am loading a png from a zip file (nochump's zip library through ByteArray to Loader). The png can be up to 45k pixels wide but only 120 tall. This creates a problem in flash, as images can only be ~8000 pixels wide. A possible solution would be to split the images into 6 columns somehow. This would probably need to be done in the ByteArray state, because the limitation is in Bitmap and Loader.

I'm using Sandy to animate some objects in 3D. What I currently do to images which are EXPORTED in the library, I want to do to some bitmaps that I create using the DRAW technique. But it wont work :-(
CODE FOR 'CREATED BITMAP' :
ActionScript Code:
var bData:BitmapData = new BitmapData(myObject.width,myObject.height);
bData.draw(mask5);
[Code]....
Sandy doesn't seem to treat the 'created' bitmap the same as those that are exported from the library.

I've written a class that iterates through all the frames of a movie clip and draws each one to a different bitmap. When I'm done, I should be able to iterate through the bitmaps and play them like a flipbook animation.If I draw all the clips to the same size bitmapdata, then everything looks great. But this is wasteful because now a lot of the bitmapdata's are bigger than they need to be (takes up more memory), and also causes problems because the hit tests don't look right.
So next I try to crop all the bitmapdata to be the smallest possible sizes. However, when I do this, there are subtle differences in the way the images look - the edges might look slightly darker in one frame than in another. When I line up all the images and play them back to back, it no longer looks the same way it originally did.I have no idea why the images look different, and have no idea how to work around this problem, I have tried many different approaches. I have tried using BitmapData.draw(), BitmapData:copyPixels(), and manually using BitmapData:SetPixel(), and all end up with the same result

I haven't worked very much with bitmap manipulation and I need to create an app that can find a bitmap (or a pattern of pixels really) in another bitmap.Are there other methods of doing it besides iterating through the pixels and using getPixel()?I'm of course looking for the most effective solution.

I'm working on a game whose background has many layers that each scroll at different speeds.
Inside each layer I have a Sprite, I've started using graphics.beginBitmapFill, but what I've found is that the graphics.clear() function doesn't actually clear the contents set by the previous call to graphics.begin.BitmapFill. Each frame, I adjust the matrix to shift the layer as needed. Then, I call graphics.clear() and graphics.beginBitmapFill() with the adjusted matrix. Since my layers have alphas in the bitmap, I can see the contents that was drawn the previous frame.

I've seen the BitmapData object used for graphics a fair bit, especially in games. Many of these cases have done things in somewhat fundamentally different ways, and I was wondering what the best way generally is.
Method 1: Each animation frame is kept in a separate BitmapData object using an array.
Method 2: The animation is kept in a strip using a single BitmapData object and using the "sourceRect" parameter of copyPixels.
The draw and hitTest methods appear not to provide any "sourceRect" parameter. Most of the code I have seen using method 2 has worked around this by copying the bitmap frame into a temporary bitmap for these methods. This seems like quite a large processing overhead to me. Using method 1 this is generally not a problem, unless hitTest needs to be used with scaling and/or rotation, in which case a temporary transformed copy is still needed it seems as hitTest doesn't except a transformation.
I'm thinking method 1 is the better choice since it avoids having to make temporary copies for the most part, and I don't think it would waste much memory (just the duplicated width, height, etc values?). Is this generally true or is there a reason lots of people seem to do things the second way?
Also is there a better way to use hitTest for bitmaps that have been scaled, rotated, etc?

I have a code, that draws a horizontal line, then it turns into a slope, and at the end of the slope it draws a circle. Here's a code:
Code:
var xspeed:Number = 1; // defines increments for x of slope
var yspeed:Number = 2; // defines increments for y of slope
var hspeed:Number = 5; // horizontal line increments
[code]....
Create document 800x700 and put this code into main timeline. Now test movie As you can see, everything works great. But there is a problem. The circle is being drawn at 0 degree angle. But I want the circle to match the angle of the slope, so it looks like the slope and the circle are both at the same angle.
