ActionScript 3.0 :: Parent.removeChild Inside Construstor?
Sep 3, 2009
I have recently experienced problems with attempt to remove DisplayObjects that were placed at design time.I have some class "Locator" inherited from Sprite. Several instances of it are placed at the stage at design time.Locator constructor fills parent variables and tries to remove the instance itself from parent:
ActionScript Code:
public function Locator()
{
// give parent some important data
[code]....
All instances now process constructor, but only one of them processes event handler.

I got a Parent Sprite, let's name it SpriteP, which holds inside it two other Sprites. Sprite1 and Sprite2.[code]Sprite2 is a rectangle. When I rotate it, of course, the height of its parent, SpriteP, GROWS. But I would expect that height to go back to what it should be when I'm removing Sprite2!And it does! If I remove Sprite2 while NOT being rotated, the height of the parent drops back to normal, 200.

I got a Parent Sprite, let's name it SpriteP, which holds inside it two other Sprites. Sprite1 and Sprite2.
When Sprite2 is NOT rotated:
Code:
trace(SpriteP.width + ' ' + SpriteP.height); //100 250.
SpriteP.removeChild(Sprite2)
trace(SpriteP.width + ' ' + SpriteP.height); //100 200. -> works, 200 is good.
When Sprite2 is rotated at 90:

And it does! If I remove Sprite2 while NOT being rotated, the height of the parent drops back to normal, 200. But if I rotate Sprite2, the Parent won't update its bounds.

I can't seem to use removeChild. Basically this is what happens.From the Document class, or another movieClip class, I can addChild (movieClip) fine but when I go to remove them I get ArgumentError: Error #2025: The supplied DisplayObject must be a child of the caller.
even if I go: myMov.parent.removeChild(myMov) or (getChildByName(MyMov)) or anything it always either gives the above error or in the case of using .parent: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
Also using trace() to find out what the parent is it always says [ object DocClassName] and the docClass seems to return the right amount of child MovieClips. Heres my code snippet:[code]....
Do I need to create some sort of Stage for all child MovieClips to belong to?

I am trying to remove a movieclip from my main timeline but it is not working. you click a button that is in a movieclip that is dynamically added to the stage and it is supposed to remove a movieclip from the main stage. I added a trace to see if it was grabbing the right movieclip and it is. The error message that I am getting is:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

I have a flash button that once clicked that adds an existing movie clip in my library to the stage. Basically what I am trying to achieve is like a popup window in flash so it opens a movieclip and then I have a close button inside the movieclip. Now what I want to achieve is to close the movieclip once I've added it to the stage.I'm trying to use the removechild but I'm getting errors e.g. The supplied DisplayObject must be a child of the caller.at flash.display::DisplayObjectContainer/removeChild()The way I add the movieclip to the stage is by using the following code:[code]

I created two children from my document class "MainClass". One (hero) is of the class "HeroDo" and another is from the class "canDy".
Code:
public static var hero:HeroDo=new HeroDo
public static var blue:canDy=new canDy[code]....
...
Now the simple thing I want to do is to remove the "blue" child from within a function of the "hero" child and the hero child to remove itself from "its inside".I tried this, but it gives me an error. :C

I have started learning AS3 after a long stint doing work on AS2, and to test my abilities, I decided to make a quick breakout game. It has gone fine so far until I get to the part where I need to remove the bricks when they are hit. My current code for the class of a Brick is attached, and is started when a Brick is minstantiated on the Stage. However, when I use:
parent.removeChild(this);
it makes the Brick invisible but the AS3 code still runs and the ball bounces off where the moveiclip of the Brick used to be; the eventListener for ENTER_FRAME I added still runs even though I have deleted the MovieClip. This doesn't work either:
this = null;
I have to say I don't like the whole Garbage Collection idea of AS3; it seems half-hearted and uncontrollable; being a .NET developer I am used to more control than this. What was wrong with "this.removeMovieClip();" and how can I correct this? My current swf: http:[url]....(there are other things wrong, like bad collision detection,

I have an issue where removechild won't infact remove a child. I think its something to do with my dropTarget.parent issues. The concept of the code is that you drag a source onto a destination. When you drop the source onto the destination you will get a text field that says "Hello" or "Goodbye". The objective i want to achive is that once i drop a source onto the destination, removechild will remove any previouse textfields added. This is proving difficult.

I'm trying to build a conditional statement that will addChild and removeChild at different Timer Delays. Before I go any further, I thought, I should mention that I'm usinig TweenMax to ease the alpha of ease Child from 1 to 0 and back during the process to imitate a fade-in/out.
I'm getting issue with only one line - inside a conditional statement.It's running "OK". The movie runs as I want it, but the remove/addChild transitions are not at the speed I want it at. I am getting an error message in the output, but other than that, the movie runs fine.

draw a shape on the stage, make it into a movieclip, registration point wherever, tl is fine, name it mc, and put his code:
trace(mc.getChildAt(0).y);
now get inside a movieclip and move that shape around (away from registration point) for example above registration point, or wherever and output will always be 0.

I am trying to get a circle shape and a text-field sit inside a square sprite, using addChild() method. Both the children seem not to agree sitting in the lap of their parent; and are sitting at a distance, instead. If I create a square symbol on the stage and run the application, everything is fine.

This is my code in Flash/AS3, in a frame's action:
import flash.events.Event;
stop();
this.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, loading);
function loading(e:Event):void{
[Code]....
This is because I believe it is referring the splashTimer1 function by "this".
How can I refer to parent frame there, so that I can remove its event listener.

When I add a TextInput to the stage I can access it with instanceName.text. this works. Now I have one Movieclip with one TextInput inside (the textinput's instance name is testetxt). This MovieClip has a corresponding class and its code is the following:
class com.sck.testeT extends MovieClip
{
public var testetxt:MovieClip;
[Code]....
The textinput gets transparent but the text isn't changed... I realized it was because the textinput wasn't initialized yet. so I have to wait a while, but how can I know that it was initialized and I can set the initial text by code?

I'm trying to check if a clicked element is inside of an IVisualElement in Flex 4. So I want something like "if this element is in this element, then execute function". I'm aware of the 'parent' property but this doesn't seem to work when my element is not a direct child of the element but for example 3 levels deep.

I'm creating a simple navigation for a portfolio site. On my main (root stage) I have one movie clip. Inside this movie clip I have all the elements of my website. I'm doing this so the user can scale and move the navigational elements around. This is accomplished by simply placing actionscript on frame 1 on the main (root stage).
Code:
nav._xscale = 60;
nav._yxcale = 60;
Eventually I will but a slider on the main stage so the user can scale to whatever size. My problem is that everything scales fine, however, the hitboxes become extremely small, and don't scale with the rest of the elements.
Code:
onClipEvent (load) {
this._x = 8;
this._y = 25;
speed = 2;
} onClipEvent (enterFrame) {

I have two swf file, A.swf and B.swf, each with its Document Class: B.swf is loaded in a MovieClip of A.swf. When loaded, B.swf creates an instance of CSDragger (it is a library object with its class extending MovieClip) and sets an ID property of this instance to a certain value. When this dragger is dropped by the user upon a MovieClip it sends a custom event containing the value of ID too. The custom event regularly reaches B.swf but never reaches A.swf. Aside from refactoring the CSDragger class (eg moving its handleDrop method in the B.swf document class), is there any way for the event to reach A.swf? I know I can intercept it and dispatch another event, but I was looking for a different solution (if any).[code]

[code]All clips are squared.Ok, on the PlayerPlane, there are little soldiers, which have hotkeys. The effect I'm trying to create is I want to position the GameStage so that the currently selected soldier appears in the center of the GameClicker clip.The GameStage is movable by the player (to scan other areas of the map)by holding the CTRL key, so it's easy to kinda lose track of where your players are.I have tried using localTo Global and globalToLocal techniques, but I think I'm lost on the actual math of getting the GameStage to move the correct distance so that the selected soldier is centered to the GameClicker.[code]

I'm having problems with something somewhat simple. We're going to a trade show and needed a video that would randomly load a SWF clip on one scene, then I have the timeline move to another after a delay and then go to the next part to load an image, then I have it restart and do it again, for a never-ending looping video at our booth.
I'm running into an issue though, when it loops and plays the SWF for the 2nd time, the old content still remains and the new content plays over the previous one. I figured the issue was I needed to remove the previous clip before loading a new one. I found some code that I thought SHOULD work but can't seem to get it right.

I'm currently making a platform game and when the player shoots i want to add the bullets to the stage. The players gun class is in charge of adding bullets. The "players gun" is a child of "players gun holder" which is a child of "player" which is a child of the stage. is there a better or more dynamic way for the "players gun" to add bullets to the stage rather than using parent.parent.parent.addChild (bullet);

if I add a clip to the stage as a child and remove the parent and set the parent equal to null, does the child get collected and removed from memory? What if the child has an image loaded into it as its child?
In my application I'm loading a series of png images as overlays that can be tinted for customizing in this app. When I trace my memory, the basic app idles at 64,000 k. The exact second I load those overlay images it goes up to 205,000k. If I remove those clips and "clear" the stage I should go back down to 64,000 k if everything is removed and collected correctly, right? It's not, it's hanging at 215,000 k. Are my images being cached and that is the reason for the memory staying up? If so, how do I prevent that. Or upon removing the parent of the image how can I un-cache the image.
If a user switches between models and loads several different items then the application actually crashes the Flash environment because of too much memory usage. It also does the same to browsers.
