ActionScript 3.0 :: Using XML And Txt Files To Store The Text In Both Languages?
Nov 24, 2007
I'm currently building a flash website (Flash 9, AS3.0) which will be bilingual (English and French). I'll be using XML and txt files to store the text in both languages. I was wondering, what is the best way to store and use the user's language choice? I was gonna use a global variable, but apparently these are out in AS3, and the alternative way doesn't look like good practices, so i'm not sure what to do.
Here's an example i found which has multiple languages, but in this example, I don't find it practical to have to use different frames to load the different texts. So i'd be interested in suggestions for other approaches to try.

My idea is create n different txt files (n is the number of different idioms) and put lots of variables there.
Once the user has chosen the idiom he prefers I must load the right TXT file. and load the variable from this TXT file to the AS code.
I know that it was possible in AS 2.0. Not completely sure about, but i think that the name of this technique is Loadvars.

We use FMS 3.5 for streaming IPTV. We have a number of channels and currently our mp4 files are all held in the Media subdirectory, below vod
We want to divide them into separate channels for the the stations with their own subdirectories for organised filing but cannot see any way of doing this and then referencing the correct directory with the rtmp: via XML.

I've programmed a Java application using BlazeDS and Flex, but i think the problem also occurs in any ajax style application. It's a monitoring application, so requests are made regularly to the server. The browser has stored a large amount of temporary internet files on the client pc even getting it saturated. How I can avoid this? I have seen some articles that say to include variables in the html header as:

I have a flash movie that loads variables from a text file. I need it to be able to display plus signs. Right now they are omitted from display.
For example, if the text file reads variable1=1 + 1; Flash displays "1 1".
Is there a special way to store plus signs in the text file so they are displayed properly?

I'm making a calculator using Flash MX that works the same way as the basic calculator found on windows (not the scientific one). But having the user input a number, store it as a variable, store which function the user wants to perform and clear the text field then store the new input in the same text field as a different variable and multiply or add or divide or subtract the 2 numbers and getting the equals sign to display the answer when clicked is harder than I thought it would be.

I am trying to store some short text inside of a png image file. I was thinking of adding some extra text into the header section of the png file. Is there a way to do this in AS3 or would I have to create a png file from scratch and add the text in during the process? If so how would I create a png and store some text inside of the file?

I basically need to store a string of characters from an input text box and have them displayed at the last frame of the quiz. I declared the variable holding the input text as _global.player in the first frame, and upon clicking the start button the code is:
on (release) { _global.player=player.text; gotoAndStop (2); }
These variables are not referenced again until the last frame of the quiz, which reads thus:
stop();playerdisplay.text=_global.player;score.text=_global.correct;'Endng Comments Generator'if (_global.correct<=3) { phrase="Try a little harder next time";}if (_global.correct>3 + _global.correct<7) { }comment.text=phrase;
Yes, I know the global.correct coments are not yet complete, but i dont think that should be causing any issue with the playerdisplay.text (the dynamic text box to display the player name). If anyone could give me a hand that would be great. Nothing appears in the dynamic text box when the final frame of the movie loads.

I'm trying in vain to store and retrieve HTML formatted text in a XML node.I know it has to be held in CDATA brackets, otherwise the XML is invalid, but... this means that Flash doesn't parse the data as HTML, rather it just displays it as the raw text.

I'm currently working on converting an Android app I built natively as an iPhone app. I'm recreating it in Flash as I know AS3 but not Objective C. My original Android app is localized for 4 different languages (it's so easy to do with Android!) - and my question is - how would I do this for the iOS version from Flash? Would I be able to use separate XML files with all the strings in each language and load them in after somehow detecting which language the user's device is set to?I ended up using the following code:
var languageSettings:Array = Capabilities.languages;
var locale:String = languageSettings[0].toString().toLowerCase();
This gave me a 2-letter language code: 'en' for English, 'de' for German, etc. which I was able to use to load the correct xml file for each language.

I can't use charCode, or keyCode in KeyboardEvent to find out the character pressed, because even if I change the keyboard layout, charCode and keyCode are not change (if press the same key).So, how to find the presssed character, following to the current keyboard layout?
The charCode property is the numeric value of that key in the current character set (the default character set is UTF-8, which supports ASCII).is not correct.
