ActionScript 3 :: Difference Between Value Object And Generic Class?
Jan 9, 2010
I don't understand what is structurally different between a Value Object and a Class in ActionScript3. Can any Class be a VO if you decide to call it one?

Assume I know practically nothing about AS3! I'm using Flash Pro CS5. I'm trying to reassociate a flash file I've been given with its external assets and classes. In the library I have a movieclip with linkage to a class called 'StaticMap' using the base class 'flash.display.MovieClip'. am I missing a custom class file called 'StaticMap.as' that was originally located in the same folder as the fla, or is this a generic class accessible to all movieClips from within Flash?

I'm just getting started connection to webserivces and I have looked at a lot of tutorials and I get most of them to work but I'm having a little bit of a problem. I'm coding in eclipse with the flex plug-in and I'm using flash to complile it. I'm trying to come up with a generic class for my webservices where I can just pass in the wsdl and any params and it will run. I'm using the webservicex for my wsdl in this example. Here is the code below and it works great and returns an XML.
[code]...
Now the problem. I have a specific wsdl, NOT THE ONE ABOVE, that I pass in a lot of params, which isn't a problem, and it seems to be sending them all just fine but when I trace the result I keep getting [object, object]. how to turn this into and XML, or why it is coming back as an object?

Is there a way out there to essentially loop through a generic object to find out what parameters/properties are being used and/or what there names are?
ActionScript Code:
var obj:Object = new Object();
obj.foo = "hello";
obj.bar = "world";
//... and on for however many params you need
[Code] .....
I might be trying to do something that is essentially not possible, but I'm just thinking it would be very nice sometimes to access different parts of an object without having to directly know what the param name is...

As you all know, Vector support type checking by added Type parameter.
var v:Vector.<String> = new Vector.<String>();
I wonder if I am able to create a custom class that have Type parameter, something like this
var myClassInstance: MyClassDefinition.<String>;

Is there no way to extend the vector class or write functions for a generic vector without specifying the class? There are a few basic reusable functions I want to use and I'd prefer to stick with vectors rather than arrays.

I have this bit of code, and it's not working as I expected. btnContainer is a VBox that contains a ton of buttons (toggle=true); and I want to reset them to un-toggled at a certain point.
for (var btn:Object in btnContainer.getChildren()){
if (btn.isPrototypeOf(mx.controls.Button)){
btn.selected = false;
}
}
With the above code, "btn" shows up as just the index during each iteration of the loop (0,1,2,3,...), and the conditional never evaluates to true.I also tried this:
for (var btn:Button in btnContainer.getChildren()){
btn.selected = false;
}
This works fine, except that there is also a label inside btnContainer; so it throws an error when trying to cast the label as a button.

I want to create a generic component in flex. This component deals with different ArrayCollections dynamically (I want it in that way). So I thought to pass the arrayCollection and the type of that arrayCollection as arguments to the component.
Like,
var list:ArrayCollection<ClassA>;
init_Comp(list, "ClassA");
If it is possible, I can read it like this,
var newDynamicInstatnce: typeOf("ClassA") = list.getItemAt(0) as typeOf("ClassA");
Finally I have a Dynamic Instance type of that I pass. Is this possible in Flex or Is there a better way?

Right now I'm working on an advanced hitTesting engine, and What I'm trying to do here is create an engine that will detect collision with one object instead of two. That basically means that if any other objects touch this movie clip, the hitTest will return True. Right now the .fla containing the engine has nothing but a circle that can be moved using arrow keys and 8 squares that disappear when touched by the circle. Obviously, I could do something like:
if (circle.hitTest(square1)) {
do so and so
} else if (circle.hitTest(square2)) {
do this and that
} etc...
But that would be too long, since the engine has to be able to contain 100 squares without too much change in the code.

Does there exist a Flex view component that you could just pass it a custom object with all public fields/properties that it could reflect over and produce a basic UI view using flex components. Is it possible to use something like the Spark DataGrid with one item laid out vertically. It would only have to support:

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with if there is a big difference in performance in ActionScript 3 between keeping a class with only public static functions, and utilizing those functions often (as in a frame event at 30fps), and in turning the class into a "normal" class of which I instead make an instance and call the functions via the instance instead.

Given that both of these calls to getQualifiedClassName return the same thing (mx:Label), how would one go about programatically differentiating between an instance of a class and a reference to the class...
var lab1:Label=new Label();
var lab2:Class=Label;
var qcn1:String=getQualifiedClassName(lab1);
var qcn2:String=getQualifiedClassName(lab2);
In other words, how could I know that lab1 is of type Label, while lab2 is type "Class". typeof() simply returns "object" for both... getQualifiedClassName returns "mx.controls::Label" for both...

I've been having trouble with a simple generic object. I took this example from the file : var myPoint:Object = {x:50, y:20}; When I paste it into a new flash file and trace it, I get x = 50 and y = 20 . As expected. When I paste it into a file I have been working on, in the root, on it's own layer, I get "undefined" for the x & y properties. There are no other variables in my file called "myPoint".

1) Is it true that every data type within as3 is a subtype of Object?
2) Is there any (ANY) difference between typing a variable or function argument or function return as Object versus *?

i am not very clear what is the difference if you are using this and if you are not.[code]In php you have to use $this to access class properties. But in actionscript you don't.In AS you can trace testVar using this or without it like this:[code]

I'm wondering what the difference is between creating a new object with a class or function? For example:
Code:
class snake{
this.id = index++;
this._x = 0;
this._y = 0;
}
or
Code:
function snake(){
var snake = new Object();
snake.id = index++;
snake._x = 0;
snake._y = 0;
}
