First time on here.We teach English through games. All done on flash AS3 now. Want to put courses online so I have been told to use php to communicate to server and database. My question is:Do I use mysql to save stats or xml FIRST: I will get info from xml and send it to my activities in flash - I'm OK with thisSECOND: I want to send out stats from flash to mysql OR xml. The stats are:1. Student logs on of course using username and password (well that comes in not out)2. What lesson the student is on ie: 2, 3, etc...3. Highscores for game activities4. Scores student gets on each activity As far as I can see the only stats that grow are the scores on each activity and even those could be erased periodically.
View 1 RepliesIm having a bit of trouble integrating dynamic variables pulled from a databse using an ASP script with a flash movie.
Background:
I need to send variables stored in a ms sql db to a flash movie to display several values.
The dyanmic element comes in because i am using an ID to select the values from the db e.g id1 = joe bloggs id2 = paul smith
etc
When i am hardcoding the id in the asp script the variables are sent to the flash movie no probs and they display correctly.
I am also printing the asp code on the page and that all displaying fine.
HOWEVER, the issue arises when i make the asp code dynamic and by that i mean I am using request.querystring to pull the id
from the URL - The print out of the asp code is still displaying the correct variables, BUT they are not being passed to the
flash movie at all - the placeholder is blank there isn't event an error!!.
Couple of things to note -
- if you change the id bit of the url in the dynamic script to the printed asp code changes
- THE FLASH MOVIE IS IDENTIAL in both scenarios
- all variable names have remained the same
- it is NOT a location of file issue as we have tested the dynamic code files In another folder and no joy
- we are not using any other file includes or asp code in any of the page - all other code has been stripped out
THE ISSUE WE HAVE IS THAT THE PRINTED VARIABLES ARE NOT BEING PASSED TO THE FLASH MOBIE in scenario 2 where the asp code is looking for the participant id dynamically (i.e from the URL)
How to store the data text in Access databases using flash form and to search into the database. It is possible to work without server because I don't want to put this flash file on the net. how to make databases and to connect with flash and to have possibility to search the database, but to work database in the local computer.

View 2 RepliesFor various reasons, I would prefer to store binary data like images and videos as BLOBs within a MySQL database and have Flash retrieve that content directly from the database as opposed to getting it from a URL on a fileserver. So, I have written a PHP script that Flash calls which does a database query and returns the bitmap data from the BLOB. I have verified that the image data is being sent from the database through the PHP, but Flash either doesn't display the image or gives me an error saying that it is an unknown type.

Is there a way to get Loader() to accept bitmap image data that is retrieved from a BLOB in a database? Should I try to get PHP to mimic the response from an HTTP server or is there another way to load bitmap data stored as a BLOB into a display object?

I'd like to be able to send the data I generate in flash to an external text file. I understand I need some sort of script to do that, but is this something I can run just on my machine? Is it possible to pull questions from a data file into flash without having to create new frames for every question. This would be a multiple choice test. We currently hand type the questions into multiple frames and grade at the end.

Why is you can read data from a locally stored XML file but not update or add data to it. how absurd a design would that be, it simply wouldn't be logical!
View 8 RepliesI am attempting to get data from an xml file load in flash. I followed a tutorial in a new fla and it seemed to work fine, I then tried to adapt it to my own needs which worked fine. But then when trying to implement this into my news section it doesn't seem to work. I am trying to make a news section, that displays the date and news article. This is in within a movie clip, I even tried putting it in the timeline of the scene but still nothing.
- I have 2 dynamic text boxes, date_txt and news_txt
- The xml file is named news.xml,

I've got a job for a client that includes creating a flash movie that will contain a number of thumbnails that represents links to avi movies, powerpoint presentation etc. The thumbnails need to be updated and added to on a regular basis. Is it best to call the thumbnails from an xml doc so the client can update easily?In the flash movie the thumbnails will be presented as a horizontal slideshow that needs to scroll horizintally on
mouseover, and the thumbnails will also display a caption on mouseover. Is this all possible if the images are coming from an external source such as an XML doc.
I am running CS3. I want to access and update a MS SQL database through ASP but I could not find data components to download for CS3. I found Phil Heinz's tutorial[URL] but it is for MX Pro 2004. Should I be using Flex to do this or will the Flash 8 data components work on CS3?

There's a page showing all the artists my client worked for and when you click on a song title, this title is passed as a variable to a PHP page then to a Flash page. The Flash page contains an actionscript music player which then looks for the right audio file in the database and plays the song. Everything works great except for the dynamic text field which displays the song title. If the song title contains an apostrophe or a single quote, the Flash dynamic text field then shows the apostrophe.[code]

I don't understand why the Data Management system that sets up CRUD won't allow this extra parameter. It says it can only have one input: item. I can get all records, but when I try to create, update, or delete I get an error.
Or is there another way I can pass the tablename variable to the php file before I call any functions?
Im new to placing external data into Flash. I just got CS3 and Im trying to use Flash to dynamically load XML data via a FlashVars call in the HTML.
The problem is I have followed the very straight forward AS2 Help files for using FlashVars and URL variables.I have placed the code directly from the Help file into the Html between

I'm trying to read some data in from a sql source, some of which contains double quotes embedded in the text. I know I can strip the doublequotes, but don't want to go that route if I can avoid it. I've tried replacing to double quotes with hex codes before passing the text via parameter to my flash file, but the text string always cuts off at the hex code, the same as if the double quote were present in the string. I'm creating a small app to run from CD-Rom/local installation that will use multiple shared objects for data storage. To ensure proper saving without surprising the user with a permissions dialog unexpectedly, I'd like to request unlimited data storage on first time app launch - Joey Lott shows how to do this in the Actionscript Cookbook... request=mySO.flush(1024 * 500);
My question is,Can I perform this permissions request with the user a single time with a generic app SO in global fashion, so that the permissions would be set for any SOs created during the use of the product (all written to same SO directory),or do I have to request
permissions for each and every SO created? Since the latter would be unacceptable from a UE standpoint, that means stuffing all app data into a single SO which doesn't seem so great from a data config perspective...

View 8 RepliesWe have implemented a Flash photo slideshow on our site and it works just fine for most of our users. Whenever the xml.load(success) returns false I have the Flash email me a debug report. For the life of me I can not find a common thread between all of these people having problems with the Flash. I don't think it's a cross-domain issue because it works for most people, and I have the crossdomain.xml files where they should be.
