I will be creating a program to use for data entry. I'll be studying zebras in kenya and I won't have the internet there as I'm recording the data. I'd like to be able to send the data I generate in flash to an external text file. I understand I need some sort of script to do that, but is this something I can run just on my machine? (I'll probably make the data into xml format).

When the user navigates to the next frame the text loaded vanishes and is replaced by another line of text. This can be done with separate txt files, right but I was wondering if and how it could be done using one external text file.

I have a website that is all flash. I have a main file that loads in the nav and then the nav loads in the designated .swf file for each section. So there are several sections(.swf's) with lots of text taken from a database and inserted into the swf file from
an XML file. If I click in between sections, and go back to the original section of text the formatting is lost. This is only in Internet Explorer 7- this does not happen in Firefox or on the Mac.

I'm trying to read some data in from a sql source, some of which contains double quotes embedded in the text. I know I can strip the doublequotes, but don't want to go that route if I can avoid it. I've tried replacing to double quotes with hex codes before passing the text via parameter to my flash file, but the text string always cuts off at the hex code, the same as if the double quote were present in the string. The only problem I'm having is that everytime you send the contact information, a new web browser window opens up (it opens the php file in the web browser). I'm testing this on my local server and it works great, except for the fact that everytime I send it, I dont want a new browser window opening up.

I see the HTML code for setting this up (available from my host), but do not know how to get it to work in my Flash site. (I did not build the site and know very little about Flash...I'm learning as I go in order to do updates.) It looks like the site currenly links to a PHP file to allow for sign ups to our newsletter. I have found that Flash does not support the DOM command 'getElementsByTagName()' which I was endeavouring to use to find the record in the XML file that I wanted to associate with a particular dynamic text field.
Is there any other way to search through the XML file for the particular record I am looking for?
Is it possible to pull questions from a data file into flash without having to create new frames for every question. This would be a multiple choice test. We currently hand type the questions into multiple frames and grade at the end.

There's a page showing all the artists my client worked for and when you click on a song title, this title is passed as a variable to a PHP page then to a Flash page. The Flash page contains an actionscript music player which then looks for the right audio file in the database and plays the song. Everything works great except for the dynamic text field which displays the song title. If the song title contains an apostrophe or a single quote, the Flash dynamic text field then shows the apostrophe.[code]

I am trying to create a rollover where when you rollover caption0; caption1 and caption2 are displayed in sequence. Everything works except though only the first caption is ever displayed. For the other two I get "level0.caption1" and "level0.caption2" instead of the text in the xml file above. How do I parse the data so that each of the variables are assigned the text in the xml file?

I'm loading data from an XML file with html specific tags so I can put all the formatting of the text field in the XML file, my XML looks something like this:

i have a text area, set to multiline. For some reason, when my text imported from xml shows up in the box, it starts several lines down into the box. So for example, my Text box is positioned with the top at the midpoint of my stage, but the text starts about 3/4 down the page, about half way down the text box. Can someone please tell me why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?
I noticed that when I put my cursor in the box and move it up and down, the rest of the text 'scrolls' into the frame, but otherwise it's cut off.
I am in the process of creating a flash site for friend of mine. He wants to be able to have a guest list for his events in DC. I have created form boxes and have given them all "instance names". But I have absoultely NO clue how to have the text entered by people trying to get on the guest list sent to my server so we can all read it.
I have a book on Flash but it really doest explain how to do it at all. I'm guessing I need to do some actionscript?

ok so when i need to connect a swf to some sort of data source on the server be it XML, a .NET DLL, a CFC or what ever so that i can load data from a database or what ever, everyone is always saying that i shouldn't hard code the connection string into my actionscript as anyone can get it and do malicious things with it. So how should i load the connection string into flash. if i put them on the server in an XML file or somthing like that then i still need to put a connection string into the actionscript in order to load in my main connection strings into the actionscript.
Basically i need to know how to load an external string into a swf without anyone else being able to get hold of that string for them selves. i am developing an app for somone and i need it to connect to a database and i need it to be secure. i have everything sorted except making the connection string to the database unstealable.
I am seeing repeated comments on this discussion forum that it's not possible to save data from Flash into a locally stored XML file . . . but there must be a way to do this. Why is you can read data from a locally stored XML file but not update or add data to it. how absurd a design would that be, it simply wouldn't be logical!

How can I save data to a text file and also append a record to data in an existing text file? I've used Authowrware previously and it was quite easy to create a large string of data (a comma separated list) and export that to a text file (and create the text file if it didn't already exist). I could then easily append additional rows of data (records) to the text file. We want to build a questionnaire that will store the data locally on the computer in a text file. Each record may have a few hundred data points in a comma separated list.
