I am seeing repeated comments on this discussion forum that it's not possible to save data from Flash into a locally stored XML file . . . but there must be a way to do this. Why is you can read data from a locally stored XML file but not update or add data to it. how absurd a design would that be, it simply wouldn't be logical!

I want to beable to load XML data located on the client machines into the SWFfile. It looks like security settings is not allowing thi tohappen, as the local files are treated as a separate sandbox.If I were to use System.security.allowDomain, how do Ipecify local files? It's not a domain or URL. Or is there another way to do this? I'm wading through thesecurity information, but I haven't found the solution yet.

I'm just asking what I need to know in order to do this. I'd like to build a certain flash app that takes information (such as a name, paragraph, and/or sentence) saves it, and can then be recalled when a user clicks a button... even if the user has closed out the application.I'm still relatively new to flash, I know enough to get by on basic projects, but I want to expand my knowledge so I don't end up stuck in a beginners rut.Would this require using PHP and Flash? Or can it be done entirely in flash via exporting data to a designated external file?
View 2 RepliesI'm sorry this is a question from a server ignoramus, I've previously captured user input using a combination of cfml and text files. That was way back in 2002 and using AS 1.0. I'm now working in an environment where the server guy won't put any scripts on, and I mean none, no PHP, no ASP, no CFML, nothing. Would anyone know if there is a way of capturing user input without using a script, please? This prolly shows a really basic lack of understanding of how servers work but I'm a bit desperate. I know the Flash Learning Interactions can work with SCORM and pop results into LMSs that use SCORM and our LMS does use SCORM, but it seems to only be within the learning interactions and I don't know where to start to tailor this for the input I need to capture.

This is a standalone application meant to be used on a Windows machine. Is there a way to download and save the user's responses (viz. location of mouse, type of object clicked, etc.) onto the local computer without using the Flash Debugger?
I came across an article [URL] which states that it is possible to save local data onto a user's computer without a backend script (e.g. php) in Flash Player 10 but the article doesn't really say how this is done.
I have read through Shared Objects but i couldn't get it work...

I will be creating a program to use for data entry. I'll be studying zebras in kenya and I won't have the internet there as I'm recording the data. I'd like to be able to send the data I generate in flash to an external text file. I understand I need some sort of script to do that, but is this something I can run just on my machine? Is it possible to pull questions from a data file into flash without having to create new frames for every question. This would be a multiple choice test. We currently hand type the questions into multiple frames and grade at the end.

With the following coding, my button opens the image in the same .swf-movie. How can I get it to open this local picture in an external local browser (or seperate flash)? Depending on the viewers OS and presets, either Windows Gallery or a web-browser etc.. My movie is to small to show the images full-screen, and it's for a CD not web.

How can I save data to a text file and also append a record to data in an existing text file? I've used Authowrware previously and it was quite easy to create a large string of data (a comma separated list) and export that to a text file (and create the text file if it didn't already exist). I could then easily append additional rows of data (records) to the text file. We want to build a questionnaire that will store the data locally on the computer in a text file. Each record may have a few hundred data points in a comma separated list.
View 8 RepliesI am attempting to get data from an xml file load in flash. I followed a tutorial in a new fla and it seemed to work fine, I then tried to adapt it to my own needs which worked fine. But then when trying to implement this into my news section it doesn't seem to work. I am trying to make a news section, that displays the date and news article. This is in within a movie clip, I even tried putting it in the timeline of the scene but still nothing.

After this at the end of each game I want to send the time it took to complete also to the XML file.The problem I have is I don't know to to create a new user inside the XML file and then replace the default time of 00:00:00 with the time that the player has set.NameTextField is the name of the textfield.Hourtext, Minutetext and Secondtext are the names of the timer. (They are ordered like Hourtext ':' Minutetext ':' Secondtext.

There's a page showing all the artists my client worked for and when you click on a song title, this title is passed as a variable to a PHP page then to a Flash page. The Flash page contains an actionscript music player which then looks for the right audio file in the database and plays the song. Everything works great except for the dynamic text field which displays the song title. If the song title contains an apostrophe or a single quote, the Flash dynamic text field then shows the apostrophe.[code]

I don't understand why the Data Management system that sets up CRUD won't allow this extra parameter. It says it can only have one input: item. I can get all records, but when I try to create, update, or delete I get an error.
Or is there another way I can pass the tablename variable to the php file before I call any functions?
Im new to placing external data into Flash. I just got CS3 and Im trying to use Flash to dynamically load XML data via a FlashVars call in the HTML.
The problem is I have followed the very straight forward AS2 Help files for using FlashVars and URL variables.I have placed the code directly from the Help file into the Html between

I know I can strip the doublequotes, but don't want to go that route if I can avoid it. I've tried replacing to double quotes with hex codes before passing the text via parameter to my flash file, but the text string always cuts off at the hex code, the same as if the double quote were present in the string. I'm creating a small app to run from CD-Rom/local installation that will use multiple shared objects for data storage. To ensure proper saving without surprising the user with a permissions dialog unexpectedly, I'd like to request unlimited data storage on first time app launch - Joey Lott shows how to do this in the Actionscript Cookbook... request=mySO.flush(1024 * 500);
My question is,Can I perform this permissions request with the user a single time with a generic app SO in global fashion, so that the permissions would be set for any SOs created during the use of the product (all written to same SO directory),or do I have to request
permissions for each and every SO created? Since the latter would be unacceptable from a UE standpoint, that means stuffing all app data into a single SO which doesn't seem so great from a data config perspective...
