View 17 RepliesIs it possible to pull questions from a data file into flash without having to create new frames for every question. This would be a multiple choice test. We currently hand type the questions into multiple frames and grade at the end.
View 1 RepliesI will be creating a program to use for data entry. I'll be studying zebras in kenya and I won't have the internet there as I'm recording the data. I'd like to be able to send the data I generate in flash to an external text file. I understand I need some sort of script to do that, but is this something I can run just on my machine? (I'll probably make the data into xml format).
View 1 RepliesWe have a client who wants to share with us flash widgets whose contents can be updated using an external file. Our question is: Is it better to use a .txt file (such as notepad) or a .xml file to input data into Flash?
View 4 RepliesI trying to load indivual strings of text from an external file. example: I have a movie that navigates from frame to frame. on each frame I'd like a line of text to load into the movie. When the user navigates to the next frame the text loaded vanishes and is replaced by another line of text. This can be done with separate txt files, right but I was wondering if and how it could be done using one external text file.
View 2 RepliesI know this goes against the logic of most menus. I am building a menu. I have very nice mc called "menu_list" and loading into the movie loads a easily editable external XML file with all my over categorys and sub menus
it looks like this...client.niallohara.net/xml_menu.html

I'm trying to read some data in from a sql source, some of which contains double quotes embedded in the text. I know I can strip the doublequotes, but don't want to go that route if I can avoid it. I've tried replacing to double quotes with hex codes before passing the text via parameter to my flash file, but the text string always cuts off at the hex code, the same as if the double quote were present in the string. For example:This is a "text" stringreplace double quotes with hex: This is a x22textx22 stringesults when read into flash: This is a <remainder is dropped>Yet if I type the same text string in a variable in flash, the string displays the double quotes properly:

this is my current cv, painstakenly written in flash: [URL] I was told that I can use an external data file and load this into a flash file with xml, i am trying to make an xml file that will do what you see here above. But i cannot get the information to load properly where each title is separate (bold) and the description underneath it (plain text). i cannot get my cv to show up in a linear format as it only shows the
first entry and then stops.

i got a doubt with creating XML objects using classes. thecase is:there should be a class like CreateXML which will intialisean XML objectand has methods to add new elements to the XML. how to createnew XMLelements/nodes to this class?is there anyway to create and write into an external XML fileusingactionscript?can we make an XML object updated with new data elements onthe runtime
View 1 RepliesI am seeing repeated comments on this discussion forum that it's not possible to save data from Flash into a locally stored XML file . . . but there must be a way to do this. Why is you can read data from a locally stored XML file but not update or add data to it. how absurd a design would that be, it simply wouldn't be logical!

I need to create a database using Flash which gets the data such as "name , last name..." from the user and stores it in a database.
View 1 RepliesI've done a bit of web design work,and have used Flash a little,so familiar with the principles of the timeline, keyframing, and twining etc.The sort of thing we might be looking to produce would be similar to this site below :[url].....how technically challenging that might get,or is it the sort of thing that although looks complex, might be relatively easy to achieve armed with a reasonable understanding of the Flash principles that are driving it.
View 10 RepliesIs there a way to load an XML file if it's on a differen server/domain than the html/swf file? I already set allowScriptAccess="all" but it didn't seem to help.

I am attempting to get data from an xml file load in flash. I followed a tutorial in a new fla and it seemed to work fine, I then tried to adapt it to my own needs which worked fine. But then when trying to implement this into my news section it doesn't seem to work. I am trying to make a news section, that displays the date and news article. This is in within a movie clip, I even tried putting it in the timeline of the scene but still nothing.
- I have 2 dynamic text boxes, date_txt and news_txt
- The xml file is named news.xml,
- both the fla and the xml are in the same folder
This is the actionscript I am using:
function loadXML(loaded) {
if (loaded) {
_root.thedate =

View 1 RepliesI have a Flash movie which is embeded in 'base.aspx' file, when a button is clicked in the flash movie another 'something.aspx' file need to be called.When I run the flash movie from the Adobe Flash Professional CS3 IDE , it (the flash movie) calls the 'something.aspx' file just as expected.However when I embed the flash movie in to the 'base.aspx' file it doesn't work as expected .
View 4 RepliesI've really looked hard to find an example/tutorial for loading external XML data into a DataGrid component using AS3. The code I'm using at the moment has the XML data in the AS code.
Here is the code that is working for internal XML data:
import fl.controls.dataGridClasses.DataGridColumn;
import fl.data.DataProvider;
stop();
var emailXML:XML = <emails>

I have been given the task at work to create a interactive tree. A little like a family tree, but instead of people it will be branches (think of them as buildings). I've spent a day or so looking and finding out how to get the data from my SQL database in a format that flash can read it etc. Anyhow the problem is I don't really know where to start with the graphical aspect of it...
Each branch can have more than one child and i want the user to be able to scroll through the history of that branch, seeing it's parent branch and also it's child branches, each branch will have a certain amount of information to show. So it's almost as if i need to create a branch class and then use this and load all the data into it etc.
Should i create a new layer for each branch? Then when the user clicks a down button i just take them to a new layer? Do i create the whole thing on one layer and have navigation buttons so the user can scroll around the window and see all the other branches?
It would be nice if i could draw the damn thing at run time, and the user almost walks along lines from one branch to another, and has the option which path to take if one branch has more than one child etc.
I want to create a slideshow banner that will showcase our products. The slideshow will contain the image of the product, the name, the price, the item code and the link when someone clicks on it. Each week we update the best sellers and it can be from 5 to 15 different products. Similar to what we have now in our website www.deiequipment.com which now is static, we want to animate it and rotate the products like a slideshow.The problem we are encountering is that we have to manually update the slideshow content.
We would like to know if there is a way through scripting or catalyst to connect to a database and simply update all these fields automatically. So for example if the database has 5 items, automatically will pre-fill each field listed above and the slideshow will have 5 products.
If we update the database now with 10 products, to update automatically. That way we can create 1 slide show, the time it takes to rotate to the next product, and add simple button controls to the slide show for next and back that will simply go through the loaded items.I tried to do a research on how to do it online but some takes me to scripting, others to catalyst dabases, but none are specific to what I need.As a note, the image will just be an image holder that will be updated with the image field in the database that points to the URL location of the image.
I need to figure out how to create a flash based "widget? where I can pull in and display basic local airport data, like Delay information.
View 1 RepliesI need to hold a couple of variables in an outside file that can be incremented by user activity -- not just during one interaction with the swf, but with every one.I have no problems with using loadVars and I get the loadandsend process; it is just that I have
no background in cgi or asp for holding the variable and being able to update it.I know I cannot write to a txt file -- that is what I have been using thus far with loadVars for importing values, but this will not help me here. I know it should be a fairly simple script -- I also know I ought to pick up php, but for the moment -- until a greater amount of time comes my way -- I turn to you.
I can think of to prevent my external images from being compressed. I have a few png files being pulled into flash via XML and AS3. For some reason the images that are being pulled in are being compressed and look terrible. What can i do to prevent them from being compressed so much. They are pulled in via an empty movieclip.URL...Here is the AS that is being used to pull the images in and the XML information.[code]

View 7 RepliesI have some code that was written to create a thumb galleryof sorts...an image scroller that, when the thumbnail was clicked,another data area was populated with the xml data. I have removedthe image scroller part, making the main data area itself scroll. Ineed it to display the xml data when the image loads, instead ofmaking me click on the image to load it, which is what is currentlyhappening.
View 7 Repliesi have got a Flash Projector which is to be deployed onDC/DVD rom. I have found an Extensionthat allows me to search within a text field, but what aboutexternal content files?
View 3 RepliesWhen i load an external swf file it looses quality and renders blurry. But the swf itself (the external one) looks perfectly fine standalone. Now i ask myself, is this really a flashbug or what the heck is it?
Because i wrote an elearning player wich references hundreds of this files, its not very funny to see the quality dropping. To get some meat for you, i created a small site, wich should make the problem much clearer:
Click here and explore the strange bug
I am building an application in flash that speaks to a database using PHP. I know you can remove rows from a database in PHP using a DELETE in the SQL statement. Does anyone know how to delete a file like a jpeg?, I would press a button in flash it would then call some PHP script, does anyone know the PHP to remove a file?
