Actionscript 3 :: Creating An Array Of Objects - Set A Value Of One Object?
Apr 7, 2012
I would like to add a bunch of cars to the stage, and store them in an array as objects. The problem is I hate using external AS files and would like to keep it as simple as possible.I tried doing :
var car:Object = {carcolor:String,carscale:Number,carpower:Number};
var test:Array = new Array()
for (var i:Number=0; i<10; i++) {
test.push(car)
}
The problem is if I try to set a value of one object in the like test[1].carscale = 5
Every object in the array gets their attribute carscale set to 5.Is there any way I can do this without using external class files?

I have a XML document that has 8 main sections, and under each section there is a number of sub sections and under each of those sections their is a number of sub sections and then one more level. I am trying to create one main multi-dimensional array that can reference the particular sub section. For example by using this notation:
"_global.Link_arr[main section id][sub section level 1][subsection level2][sub section level 3].link " (or _global.Link_arr[0][0][0][1].link)"
Is this possible to do with the following script.
_global.Link_arr = [];
navBtn.subfolder = category[i].childNodes;
var l:Number;
var subArrNum:Number = 0;
[code]....
I do not know how to create an array within a multidimensional array like I am doing?

AS3
Error: Error #1502: A script has executed for longer than the default timeout period of 15 seconds.
Is there a way to temporarily suppress this on a specific block of code? I am creating a HUGE dynamic 3d array of objects, 1000x1000x1000 and need the build to actually finish the initializing.

I want to do is create several arrays to hold groups of movie clips (i am using as buttons) which have similar functions so that I can add event listeners using a for loop statement rather than making a huge list of add and remove event listeners.I have seen this method working before but I cannot get my code to work!! This is probably a very noob concept but I have been struggling with it for hours.Ok, so in the extends movie clip bit on my as file I declare the array as such:public static var controlBtns:Array;Then in the initializing function I put values into the array as such: [code]The trace seems to output all the object names (as they are listed in the library) and then I get this error: TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.Which is kind of obvious as I cannot seem to access the movie clip instance names that I have set up in the array.I tried putting quotation marks around the names in the array making them strings but then I can't access properties of strings - which is obvious enough to.

I need to create an array with objects when using random numbers. This is the script I have:
ActionScript Code:
if(_root.EnemyCar.hitTest(_root.kill)){
_root.EnemyCar.removeMovieClip();
var lol6 = Math.floor(Math.random()*200);
if (lol6==2){_root.attachMovie("EnemyCar", "EnemyCar", _root.getNextHighestDepth(), {_x:74, _y:-100})};
if (lol6==1){_root.attachMovie("SwatVan1", "SwatVan1", _root.getNextHighestDepth(), {_x:114.9, _y:-45})};
if (lol6==0){_root.attachMovie("OilTanker", "OilTanker", _root.getNextHighestDepth(), {_x:74, _y:-250})};
}
As you can see the random number is from 0-250, I want to be able to have enemycar spawning from 2-20 and other movie clips spawning from 20-40 etc.

Using AS3, I was wondering how to control one object, a ball, while another ball bounces around. I'm modifying code from "Foundation ActionScript 3.0 Animation" by Keith Peters.
I'm pretty new so I'm probably making some obvious mistakes here. First of all I thought I could refer to the balls as ball[0] and ball[1] since they are in an array called ball. Is this correct?

Ever needed to create an object hash, yet wanted to retain some array functionality such as .length, and getItemAt()? Well I wrote a handy little utility class, using Proxy, that does so. Simply use it in place of a generic Object, and it will maintain a count of it's properties, as well as allow you to reference any index you need [URL].

I'm having trouble with my code. I keep getting this error
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at Test_fla::MainTimeline/frame1()
I believe it has something to do with the array, considering it works when I remove the array stuff. What I'm trying to do is to be able to move objects through an array with my gravitate() function in the Grav Class.
stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,onLoop, false, 0, true);
for(var i:uint=0; i < numParticles; i++){
var p:Grav = new Grav(5, 0xff0000, Math.random()*250, Math.random()*250);
addChild(p);
particles.push(p);
} function onLoop(evt:Event):void {
//for(var i:uint=0; i < numParticles; i++){
//particles[i].gravitate(1,1);
//}}

i've been reading that XML/E4X is very slow with AVM2 / ActionScript 3.when supplying an application with XML data, is it always generally a better idea to parse the XML object into an array of objects to call rather than using E4X with the stock XML data?

Does creating a new instance of an Object that uses an identical name to an older instance, delete the previous instance? Or should the original instance be deleted first? The code uses a ridiculous amount of XML vars. Isn't it less memory intensive to parse the XML and save the properties to an Object, and then delete the XML Object, rather than keep the XML Object around and reference it's child nodes directly? Is it better form to break up a huge XML file (>600lines/3200vars) into smaller chunks?

I have an array of temporary objects created in a for loop. The objects are of type class "Tile", a class I created. However, it appears that whenever I create a lot of tiles in the for loop, the program slows down indefinitely.
While the array is whiped at a later trigger point, I am thinking that perhaps these Tile objects are not being erased from memory. They are being created on the fly in a for loop, and the array is being reset to "array = []".
Are the objects still in memory or are they cleaned up when the array is set to []?

I have a service which returns an Array of ObjectProxy objects. I would like to cast this to a custom object (a value object) and create an ArrayCollection. How can I do this?ited:I am using Django and PyAMF for the backend. I hope that the /n would create a new line of the text field called reviewBoxContentText.
for(var i:Number = 0; i<dropTarg.length; i++){
with(reviewBoxContent.reviewBoxContentText){

iSo let's say I have three different arrays of objects, and I want to combine them into one sorted array. I want the order to be such that the items from each array are evenly distributed throughout the sorted array.
If there were 3 xItems, 3 yItems, and 3 zItems, the sorted array would have this order: x, y, z, x, y, z, x, y, z
HOWEVER, even if the arrays are differing lengths, I still need to make them alternate as much as possible. If there were 6 xItems, 4 yItems, and 2 zItems, the sorted array should have this order: x, y, x, y, x, z, x, y, x, y, x, z

When searching for objects (not strings) in Dictionary objects using the 'in' operator, if the object is not found in the Dictionary object, it will be searched for in the delegate objects. With 10.1, the toString operator will be called on the Object if not found in the Dictionary. This can cause problems with Proxy objects who need to define the callProperty function or it will generate a RTE. ...what it means "it will be searched for in the delegate objects"?

Inside the attached .rar Two seperate objects are made, object A and object B, but they share the same variable (only works with arrays) even though they aren't linked in any way. Any changes made to A is reflected in B, and vise versa.
How would I go about fixing this issue? (SIMPLY, aka I don't want to write a class or whatever, I just want to know if I am doing something wrong, like not writing new or something)

I'm trying to create a for loop to set the color objects outlineColor1...100 to the value defined in variable _root.outlineCol. Everything works fine when I set the color to these objects via 100 lines of code but I'd like to replace them with a for loop of course. I suspect the syntax in the first part of the second line is incorrect but I'm not sure.
for (var i:Number = 1; i <= 100; i++) {
outlineColor[i].setRGB(_root.outlineCol);
trace(i);

I am trying to create a library of transition effects. Each transition type or preset is its own class. In the Client/Main class I would like to create the transition type I need based off a static constant, hoping to save myself from having to write a long switch statement to select which type of transition class to instantiate.[code]I am not using the getDefinitionByName utility correctly, what am I missing here? Is there a different way to achieve class instantiation by passing in the name of the class as a string.

is it possible to create instance inside method of another instance? But I want new instance to be sibling of instance where it was created.something like this:
ActionScript Code:
parent = new Parent();
childA = new Child();
parent.addChild(childA);
Child class would have this onclick event function:
ActionScript Code:
public function child_click(e:MouseEvent):void {
childB = new Child();
}
I want "childB" to be child of "parent", no property of childA. so I could do:
ActionScript Code:
parent.addChild(childB);
how is this possible without passing "parent" instance as parameter?

In other words, how would I create preferences.location, or preferences.accountID without explicity specifying them in my code
