ActionScript 3.0 :: How Does Flash Determine The Coordinates Of Movieclip In Relation To The Stage

Mar 28, 2009

Okay this is always something that's puzzled me. If I create a movieclip, place that clip on the stage, then inside that movieclip, create another movieclip, how does flash determine the coordinates of that second movieclip in relation to the stage. The reason I am asking this, is that I have a large movieclip which contains a number of other smaller movieclips. When a user clicks on one of the smaller movie clips, I need the larger movieclip to move so that the clicked movieclip is now centered on the stage.

I figure that this would be easier to know if I knew how to calculate the distance which the second, smaller movieclip is from the center of the main stage in x and y coordinate values. Am I making any sense? If not I'll try to explain again.

Code:

videos.onEnterFrame = function() {

Professional :: How To Set MovieClip Position Relative To Stage With Classes

Mar 1, 2011

I'm developing my first flash app. I'm trying to use classes because they'll be very important in my future app. I created a simple movieclip with a star. However, instead of putting it directly on the stage, I'm calling it from library, using the addChild method to place the star in the stage. To do that, I simple right click over the movieclip icon->properties->check export to action script->and I give a name to the class (for example: myMC)

Then, inside the class I wrote:
package {
import flash.display.*;
import flash.events.*;
public class myMC extends MovieClip {
var star:myMC=new myMC();
public function myMC() {
[Code] .....

As I am placing the two variables origin_x and origin_y inside the constructor, I'm expecting to get 250 and 200 respectively. After drop the star, I want to send it to it's original place, and that's why I need to keep this values. And here's the problem, origin_x and origin_y are both ZERO, instead of 250 and 200... The value is not relative to stage. I managed a little bit and I found this post : [URL]. Unfortunately I tried to replace by the suggested code, but both values remain zero. An interesting thing, is that if I put the star directly in the stage instead of calling it from the library as I am doing, I get correct values in origin_x and origin_y.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Position MovieClip Relative To Stage From Within Classes

Aug 5, 2011

I have a Flash file for an xml driven menu. There is the document Class, called Main. There is also a Navigation class. In the Navigation class, I position the location of main buttons and sub menu buttons for the menu. I want to position the buttons in the Navigation class relative to the stage. Currently, they are just fixed at certain positions (like 20); To do this, I have read that because this is not happening in the document class.

I must add an event listener to the constructor that listens for the added to stage event. I am not sure how to do this, as when I try and add an event listener for added to stage in the Navigation class nothing happens, (or all menu items diaspear). How to position movie clips relative to the stage (i.e. stage.stageWidth - 50) from a class that is not document class? How to do so in the document class, too.

ActionScript 2.0 :: String To MovieClip Is That Possible / XML-Related

Jun 26, 2008

I'm trying to put together an XML based Flash map. On the right side, is a dynamically loaded XML menu. Now, my problem is that the rollover and rollout effects for the menu doesn't work. Basically, I have a movie clip that contains a dynamic textfield and another movieclip (the latter contains a button.I wanted it so that when the user rolls over this button, it plays, and when the user rolls out, it plays an exit "fade")[code]

I've tried using "var menuItem=this._name" to retrieve the "path" of my buttons when you rollOver them (which should be something like "mcContainer.menuItem.bCountyBG.gotoAndPlay(2) ;"), although I need the menuItem to change to whatever this._name is.It doesn't work because menuItem's returned value is considered a string, so I can't use it in my command---> "mcContainer.menuItem.bCountyBG.gotoAndPlay(2) ;I was wondering if anyone can tell me if it's possible to convert this string to a movieclip by some sort of function or other means?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Z Position Impact On Stage Position?

Jan 13, 2011

I have a sprite that I zoom out using the sprite.z property. Once the z property has been modified the sprite x and Y values do not match the stage x and y real value. So far so good and what I was expecting!

What I want to accomplish is that when the user clicks the stage the sprite tweens to where the mouse was clicked but I don't know what x and y position to send to the sprite. ( since stage 200,200 is something like 400,400 for the sprite depending on z value)

I tried Utils3D.projectVector using Matrix3D of the perspectiveProjection of the stage without success. (i.e. I get Vector3D(Infinity, Infinity, NaN))

I could fallback to scalex/scaley but sprites.z gives me the correct scale, perspective projection, paralax scrolling since I have sprites on different z level all for free. I would have to recode all that.

in my Main class i have

Code:
var ballOne:Ball = new Ball();

i am trying to get the x and y value of ballOne from within my Main class but if i try to do

Code:

how do i tell my code that the ballOne is a Sprite so i can get the x and y values?

also not working:

ActionScript 3.0 :: Fluid Layout Stop Changing Resize Position When Movieclip Is At Certain Position?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Determine Rotation Of Object To Stage?

Jun 18, 2009

How can I get the X, Y, and rotation values, relative to the stage of a child of unknown number of parents?

What I am doing is: I have a 'stick' object, that creates a child 'stick', that creates a child 'stick', etc a random number of times.

The end stick then creates a leaf.

Each new stick rotates a little bit randomly.

As a result when my leaf falls off the final stick it flies off in a strange direction.

How can I get the leaf to fall down (eg y++ relative to stage)?

Alternatively I thought I could dispatch an event that has a leaf created at the stage level but then I really need to know what the X and Y co-ordinates of my final stick is realtive to the stage.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Determine Height Of Full Browser Stage?

May 6, 2009

I need to write a function that will position a movieclip depending on the height of the stage.I'm a little uncertain as how to proceed with this, as my knowledge on AS2 is still developing..Basically I want something like the following thought process:

if stage is < 500px height, then movieclip_y=(Stage.width/2)-100
if stage is > 500px height, then movieclip_y=(Stage.width/2)+100

I hope this makes sense. I guess I'm unsure as how to determine the height of the stage (I've created a stage that sizes itself to the browser dimensions).
