Actionscript 3 :: Dynamically Instantiate A Typed Vector From Function Argument?
Apr 1, 2011
For a game I'm attempting to develop, I am writing a resource pool class in order to recycle objects without calling the "new" operator. I would like to be able to specify the size of the pool, and I would like it to be strongly typed.
Because of these considerations, I think that a Vector would be my best choice. However, as Vector is a final class, I can't extend it. So, I figured I'd use composition instead of inheritance, in this case.
The problem I'm seeing is this - I want to instantiate the class with two arguments: size and class type, and I'm not sure how to pass a type as an argument.
Here's what I tried:
public final class ObjPool
{
private var objects:Vector.<*>;
public function ObjPool(poolsize:uint, type:Class)
[Code].....

example:
var c : Class = Sprite;
//This can be random class such as movieclip/etc
var o = getDefintionByName(getQualifiedClassName(c));
this works, but in flash develop, it says that the variable 'o' has no type declaration
which basically means
var o : SOMETHING = getDefintionByName(getQualifiedClassName(c));
but how do i put that something there when i do not know what its coming because of random classes?

instantiate a Vector.<Number> with two values of 1.0 You might think I would do Vector.<Number>(1.0, 1.0); but that only traces 0 Is what I'm trying to do possible? If so, how? Or am I stapled to the routine of using .push ?

So far, I have a class that creates a Vector object, and pushes data into it:
ActionScript Code:
public var mList:Vector.<cusClass> = new Vector.<cusClass>();
The data is read by a second class like so:
ActionScript Code:
trace(firstClass.mList);
The problem Im having is take that same Vector and passing it into a third class (from the second class) as an argument in a method: ActionScript Code: views.mUpListing(firstClass.mList);

Some may know that PHP methods can be remotely invoked from Flash.Sometimes the input parameter of a remote PHP method is an array of integers.Because PHP is dynamically typed an attacker can pass an array of anything.The array of integers has to be used in a SQL query.[code]

I made a Post-It note movie clip that is draggable. I want to create a whole pad of notes, or at least simulate this. I thought the best way to do this would be to add another Post-It whenever the startDrag() is triggered.
I first tried creating the Post-It with symbols but didn't think I could dynamically create new ones this way. I then created a class and added it to the stage[code]...

Using org.as3commons.reflect I can look-up the class name, and instantiate a class at runtime.I also have (non-working) code which invokes a method. However, I really want to set a property value. I'm not sure if properties are realized as methods internally in Flex.I have a Metadata class which stores 3 pieces of information: name, value, and type (all are strings).I want to be able to loop through an Array of Metadata objects and set the corresponding properties on the instantiated class.[code]I realize that I have to declare a dummy variable of the type I was to instantiate, or use the -inculde compiler directive. An unfortunate drawback of Flex.Also, right now there's code to account for typecasting the value to it's specified type.

I am loading various swf library component/classes during run time. All of these components have the function 'remove()' in them. Not all of these components are MovieClips, many extend Sprite instead. I have them in an array that I loop through and call remove() on each of them.
I would like to keep strict mode on if at all possible:
Usually I can just do this
Code:
for(i=0;i<a.length;i++)
{
MovieClip(i).remove();
}
but I am wondering what happens if I type a class that extends Sprite as a MovieClip to avoid the compile time error in order to call the remove function on it?
remove() does things like remove all listeners, stop sounds playing etc and finally parent.removeChild(this);

I want to write a function which has 2 dimensional array as one of its arguments
_global.getList = function ( type:Number, list[]:Array )
This is giving syntax error, if I do
_global.getList = function ( type:Number, list:Array )
Then there is no error, but then, list is now, single dimensional array, which I don't want. Whats the correct syntax to write it as two dimensional array?

I have recently moved from AS2 to AS3 and I am finding the transition fairly easy, however I do have a few questions, some of which may not have been possible with AS2 but I would like to achieve them in AS3
1. Is it possible to pass the name of a class as an argument in a function and then use it to create a new instance. e.g [code]
2. Carrying on from the previous question, if a class can infact be passed, can I specifying a variable type for the argument so that only classes and not instances will be accepted?
3. I have three class files that all inherit some functions and variable from another class called Ship. Is it possible to specifying a variable type so that the variable can only hold instances of classes that are inherited from the Ship class?
