How do I find an object's index in an array
I have an array of objects similar to[code]...
After chatting with my coworkers, they have suggested I enumerate this into a large array of indexed values with references to which index they are associated with, for instance [code]...

how do you find an object's index / position within an array in flash actionscript 3? I am trying to set a conditional up in a loop where, if an object's id is equal to the current_item variable, I can return its position within the array.

So, for sending to individual streams we have to reference the connected netStream we want to send to in some way like this:
sendStream.peerStreams[0].send("MyFunction",param1,param2);
and I have to determine which peer I'm sending to by their ID such as "peerID1234"
I know that you can check the peerID of the stream by doing:
sendStream.peerStreams[0]["farID"]
how can I make my send stream function know to use the array index where the peerID is?
so basically it could be like:
sendStream.peerStreams[where peerStreams[]["farID"] == peerID].send("MyFunction",param1,param2);

Say my array is ["apple", "orange", "cherry"].
Is there a way to search "orange" to find out what index# it is in the array?
myArray[find the index# of "orange"] which would result in "1"
("apple" being "0" and "cherry" being 2.)

I'm building a plugin and I'm using actionscript to save the selection of an object in an illustrator document and then reference it later.
var arrObj:Array=new Array();
arrObj.push(app.activeDocument.selection[0]);
If I select now the same object in the document and check if its in the array it returns a -1 for the index value.
var id:int=arrObj.indexOf(app.activeDocument.selection[0]);
trace (id); //-1
Why is the selection not considered the same object as in that of the array?

Code:

array.push "moose";
var arrayObject = array[1];
trace (arrayObject.index) //this is the part i am curious about. Cause i have written another function where i need that kind of information.

I'm writing a multi-layered drawing app, and I want to be able to move the layers up and down. It's easy enough to change the objects in the display list and move the buttons, but in order for it to work continuously I need to be able to change the index of the button objects in the array so they are targeted properly by the function. Is there a way to do this in AS3?

I was just wondering whether it would be possible to remove an object from an array without referencing its index, for example when the index is unknown, or when you want to splice it from within the class itself, like ina die function for an enemy in an array. I have a project due on Friday morning, GMT.

Assume I have an array with references to different display objects on the stage. The display objects do not have any other explicit references except for the array indexes. How do I evaluate if a certain index of the array is a reference to a certain display object?Some code to clarify:
Assume:
objArr[1] = dispObj1;
objArr[2] = dispObj2;

How to make a kind of array that index things based on a object? but not being strict like dictionary.
What I mean:
var a:Object = {a:3};
var b:Object = {a:3};
var dict:Dictionary = new Dictionary();
dict[a] = 'value for a';
// now I want to get the value for the last assignment
var value = dict[b];
// value doesn't exits :s
How to make something like that. To not be to heavy as a lot of data will be flowing there. I have an idea to use the toString() method but I would have to make custom classes.. I would like something fast..

I am stuck with a string search
ActionScript Code:
var str:String = "this is better than what is better.";
var pattern:RegExp = /this.*better/gi;
var results:Array = str.match(pattern);
I want to search in a string from word1 to word2 and place all the results in an Array. So this should be accomplished using match().However the above code would return " this is better than what is better" while it should return "this is better". So the output takes the last match in the line, but I want it only to output till the first match in the line.

I have a function that finds the smallest five numbers out of an array of values and returns their index numbers. Here's a block of code from that function[code]...
The whole thing is slow, but I imagine that indexOf() is probably the worst offender. Is there any more efficient way to correlate a series of minimum values with their indexes without having to use indexOf()?
The values don't necessarily have to be stored in _elements, but they're pulled from a multidimensional array so I figure that it's the most efficient I can get at the moment.

I have used a method to shuffle a part of a Array, but i noticed that it does not work very well.When i run this method I sometimes get empty array values.So if you would try the example below and test it out some times you would get a right result but sometimes a wrong result.For example when i run this i get in my trace output:
a,b,c,d,g,,e,f (here after the g it goes wrong)
a,b,c,f,g,d,e (here it goes right)
a,b,c,d,,g,f,e (here it goes wrong)[code]...

know if the index effect the scope of an object because I am creating a game and for some reason, I get an error like below
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at com.objects::Torret/updateObject()
at com.objects::EngineApi/loop()
[Code].....
updateObject is the loop for all my objects. I have one centralized loop and in that loop it calls on an array of objects that have been placed on the stage. all of them containing the method updateObject. to update the status of the object. addGameChild() is a encapsulated addChild() , that not only adds the object to the stage, but places it in a array so it's updateObject() method can be called on. it is also used to make it easier for garbage collection.

I'm working on my website which is a portfolio site, to showcase my work I have a basic XML image gallery which does 1 of 3 things loads a large photo, goes to a frame with a video player, or goes to another frame with a gallery of web design or flash work i've done. when a thumb is clicked i trace the indexOf(event.target) of the thumbnail clicked (all thumbnails are placed into an array).
the problem is that for some reason randomly the index will not be found and return -1, but then other times it will find the correct index and work properly. i don't know what the inconstancy is thats causing this to occur

I'd really like to be able to make Flash's array access syntax 'wrap' over the array's bounds.
Lengthy explanation -
var array:Array = ['a','b','c','d','e','f'];
To keep things simple, the first index is 0, and its value is the first letter, 'a'. To get that value, we'd do this -
array[0]; // returns 'a'
As long as the index you're using to access the array is between 0 and array.length (6 in our example,) everything works fine - but if you use an index outside of those bounds, you're shut down.
array[-3];
array[9]; // both return 'undefined'
Sometimes that's a good thing - sometimes you expect that to happen, and you're fine with it. Other times, you find yourself wishing (or at least I find myself wishing) that it'd behave a bit more like this -
array[-3];
array[9]; // both return 'd'
(e.g. a photo gallery that jumps back to the beginning when you click 'next' on the last photo)There's a little chunk of code I use over and over for this sort of thing, but it's always to alter the index before passing it into the array:
var index = -3;
while(index < 0){index += array.length}
array[index % array.length]; // returns 'd'
... and that's fine, but what I really want to do is extend the Array object itself so that it'll automatically 'wrap' index values that go out of bounds.TL;DR - Is index-wrapping possible by extending Flash AS3's Array object?

I am curious if this is an okay implementation of the Array.filter() method.

I was not able to figure out an implementation of the callback function for the filter() method, where the callback was outside of the getGallery() function. I wonder if there is a way to get the isGallery function outside of the getGallery scope?

I thought that there was a way to be able to name array indexes. Like instead of myArray[0], it could be myArray["tileFour"]. I thought that instead of using index numbers one could use index words.
