Actionscript 3 :: Short "progress Code" Algorithm?
Apr 21, 2011
Does anyone have ideas to securely encode a small amount of data into approximately 8 characters? I have a project (Flash and Flex (AS3) not that it really matters) that must be deployed on CD/DVD-ROM (no local storage nor network access) but with a requirement to allow people to come back where they left off. Therefore there will need to be a code that is human-friendly to print (on dead-tree or PDF) or write down and to enter back into an input field, as well as being secure to stop cheating between different students.
There are 14 assessment items that can be completed in any order. At the moment I CRC32 their "login name" and take 16 bits from that result, and combine them with the 14 assessment bits into 30 bits that is then encoded using a form of Base32, giving 6 characters, then adding a check character, then using a character replacement for encryption. Upon return to the program and entering the 7 character progress code, after decryption and extraction, if there is a match in the name hash parts, it is assumed the completion bits are correct.
One problem identified was that only two characters change when completing each item. Is there some algorithm that would completely change the entire string if any one bit changes? Or is there a completely better way? I'd also like to store more data (dates, more bits for the hash to reduce collisions, location within the course, etc) but don't want to go above 8 or 10 characters.

I'm trying to take into account the Garbage Collector (GC), so I decide to optimize this code:[code]For instance, is it useful to put "xmlOne = null" in every iteration? I'm checking with the Flashdevelop's profiler, but I don't see the difference.maybe, I can also reuse the item object rather than creating it every time, right?

I'm making a game, and while loading and saving levels the code can be quite slow, and at the moment that means the game just hangs while waiting for it. I was wondering if it's at all possible to set up some kind of way to track the progress of the code and display it visually as it happens. For example, to test this I set up a quick bit of dummy code that just fills an array with random numbers:
ActionScript Code:
public function init(e:Event):void {
var storageArray:Array = new Array();

I have an SWF movie (1375 frames) and created a progress bar (248px wide) with a slider that moves according to the movie progress. I'm doing that next way:Calculating the distance for the slider to be moved each frame (248 / 1375) On each ENTER_FRAME moving the slider for the calculated distance The problem is - the movie ends far before the slider reaches the end of the progress bar.
I'm thinking that the distance (Step 1) is is somehow ends floored by Flash and the actual distance it moves the slider is smaller than required. That's why the movie ends, but the timeline control just passed the 2/3 of its way. My question is - is there any solution for the problem? Or any other way to go, if it's a wrong one?

I have a progress bar inside a repeater and therefore I will need to use getRepeaterItem to set it's progress as suggested in this question.
How can I do that such that the value of progress may be taken from repMonitor.currentItem.threatLevel?

how to perform a search in XML, so I use the above method, kinda hard code I know...for example, I try to search " keyIn:String = "BR1014"; " means I wanna search BR1014 in 4 XML files, so I load the XML info into an array, and using for loop to loop the XML array (in this case TitleArray1[i], TitleArray2[i]...) and compare it with keyIn (which store the value BR1014), some how the value is located in TitleArray4[i] which have the length of 12 (trace(TitleArray4[i].length) = 12)
so everytime I run it, I will overwrite abc 12 times... and out put 12 time the abc value, in this case BR1014 was located in TitleArray4[3], so the 4th output of "abc" is BR1014 but others is all 999...

While working on a project involving a mask layer and artwork layer the tutorial that explained the procedure said to press F6 to add a new keyframe to the timeline. While on the current frame, the tutor was hitting F6 and a new frame with a keyframe was produced. I need to click on the next frame then hit F6 to make the keyframe. The project is to make a vine look like it is growing and involves making lots of subsequent keyframes in this manner. The tutor breezed through making one keyframe after another - I have to physically advance to the next keyframe THEN hit F6.This really slows things down.

I have a database which has 2 tables:
CREATE TABLE RecipeDB (
RecipeID INT PRIMARY KEY AUTO_INCREMENT,
Name VARCHAR,[code]........
I also have an actionscript, in which I have ingArr:Array of ingredient strings.Now, I would like to realize the following queries here:
1) Select (all fields) one recipe which has the most of ingredients from the array. If more than one record have the same amount of matches, then divide the number of matches by total number of ingredients in recipe and return the one with the highest ratio. If there are no matches return nothing.
2) As above, but return 10 recipes with the most matches and do not perform check for equal number of matches. Sort the results by the number of matches.

So I'm making my own networking protocol for a online game, to save space each message (sent over TCP) is given a ID which is a short, 2 bytes, all messages sent from the server to the client and vice versa are strings, how can I convert a short to a string in java in just 2 bytes (characters)? I want to be able to convert a short int into 2 characters, so that I can send the short over the network in a string format in just 2 bytes and decode it back into a short on the other side (in actionscript 3). A character can hold 256 possible values right? So 256*256=65,536 which is the size of a unsigned short int!
Here's what I've got so far:
public static String toCode(int c){
if(c <= 255 ){
return Character.toString((char)c);
}else{
return null;
}}
public static int fromCode(String c){
return ((int)c.charAt(0));//Return the character code of the send string, 1 char only
}
This can turn a int into a single character which can be sent over the network, now I just need to have it use 2 characters and it can do up to a short.

how to create a short video to play before the user clicks on a video to watch. Kinda like a short advertisement (for our department) when the viewer wants to watch one of our football games.
With the help of another user here, I was able to get a video player to work using an xml list containing all of the video file names, once the title is clicked in the .swf file the player plays that video file.
xml file
Code:
<root>
<video>
<filename>UA029_Fb_1929_WA.flv</filename>
<title> WSU VS UW 1929</title>
<description></description>
[Code]....
so what I am trying to achieve is to have a short clip play every time a person wants to watch a video.
Also, Is there a way to create some type of text box in the swf player that will display all the metadata (game, year, score etc.) in that box?

I have been trying to implement the Round Up Power Of 2 algorithm outlined in the following link in AS3.
[Code]...
The algorithm works great for most of the values I've tested. It is mentioned that this will return 0 when given an input value of 0 which is technically incorrect but I'm ok with that output. What I'm not ok with is when given an input of 1 I get and output of 1. I'm thinking that this must be a caveat of AS3 and its wonky uint implementation but I can't seem to figure it out. I have also tried using the >>> logical shift operator to the same result. My C is a little rusty, but I'm not sure how this would even return 2 in C. Can someone explain to me whats going wrong here? I assume if an input of 1 was a special case it would have been mentioned in the above link.

I've searched and racked to no avail.. so, does anyone have an algorithm to create a concertina type rectangle, ideally horizontally. The desired effect is exactly like that of normal horizontal Window Blinds (assume they're closed- doesn't matter) of say 30 parts (or slats) of equal height and uniform width.
When such a blind is raised half-way up notice how the parts at the bottom go from dead flat to an increasing value in height, with perhaps the top-most part hanging normally.
Similarly, when the whole Blind is all the way up, all parts are flat. Conversely, when the whole Blind is fully extended, all parts hang at their own, uniform height. It's this "slightly differing but related to my neighbors height" I'm stuck on.
