Actionscript 3 :: What Is An Alternative To Flash Config Constants
Apr 5, 2012
We have a project that has been built in Flash and as3. It is a video player of sorts that we want to fully customize. We have different images and color schemes that we want to be able to change very quickly. Right now we have config constants that we turn on and off for different schemes. And in the code there is a massive amount of different spots where the images and such are changed.When we create a new color scheme or whatever, we need to create a new config. Then we have to go through all of the code and put it in correctly.Basically any suggestions for how we can take the current flash project (maybe flex?) and make it customizable a lot quicker.

How do you use config constants with values other than true or false? The only documentation examples I've found uses the syntax:
ActionScript Code:
CONFIG::CONSTANT_NAME {
//do stuff
}
But what if the constant is set to a value like "hello"? How can I set a block of code to only compile if the constant is set to "hello" but not "goodbye"? I tried:
ActionScript Code:
CONFIG::CONSTANT_NAME == "hello" {
}

I am using Flex/Flash to build a UI which front-ends my Rails server application. I am using WebORB as the communication mechanism. My question should apply beyond just WebORB, however. (I think).
Specifically, it has to do with the services-config.xml file. I have a local (laptop) dev environment, a remote dev and a remote production environment. I am sick of editing the URL in the services-config.xml file, rebuilding and deploying every time I want to test in a different environment.
[Code]...
By setting the URI="/weborb" and giving it a relative path, I figured it would work. locally--but it doesn't when I deploy it to my remote dev and prod environments (Heroku). Weird.

I've got a flash file that reads some links from an xml config file. These links look like:

http://www.google.com

Instead of a link, I'd like to call a javascript method that opens up a modal dialog with a list of items. I've tried the following based on some things I found, but I can't get it to work.

javascript:loadAsModal(#modaldiv, ajaxmenu.jsp?gid=3)

and

loadAsModal() takes in an empty div that i put on the page, and then the menu.jsp which builds the menu given the group id. I made sure to import all of my js libraries on the page.

The flex compiler (mxmlc) allows the use of token substitution in the compiler config xml file, as referenced in the documentation.From the linked documentation it is clear that you can specify your own tokens for substitution on the commandline, but there are also some default/magic tokens available that Adobe has put in place.For example, the snippet below is reduced from an Adobe example on how to fiddle with the framework RSL sourcing:[code]I have highlighted two tokens in use there, namely hosted.rsl.url and build.number. These work "magically" without specifying them on the commandline.
Here is another example that vaguely shows the existence of a ${flexlib} token.Unfortunately, aside from those limited examples I can't find a whisper of documentation on what tokens are available... Is the list of tokens documented somewhere that I can't find? If not, does anyone know what the available tokens are so that this SO question can be the documentation? referenced build.number, I might as well also note that build.number doesn't seem to work quite like Adobe seems to think it does since for me it simply gives me the build number, not the whole string. ie: For flex 4.5.0.20967, ${build.number} just gives me 20967 which is not much help). I had a web link where someone was complaining about the changing implementation of these tokens, but I can't find it anymore.

Context : I'm working on a Flash application developed with FDT and compiled with Flash CS4 (I need a huge library). It should connect to various Weborb services.Weborb is properly configured. My services are properly executed, and values returned, via the management console. Weborb examples as well as various tests compiled with Flex are fully functionnal.
Problem : when I try to adapt the code to compile with Flash, and setup the remote object like this :
var remoteObject = new RemoteObject();
remoteObject.destination = "GenericDestination";
remoteObject.source = "MyServices.MyService";[code]....
Question: how to properly setup a RemoteObject to connect to a Weborb remoting service from a Flash application compiled with Flash ?

We can auto-generate flex-confix xml file from flash-builder so to provide users that want to compile project on there own would be capable of doing such thing with out buying FB. So we use something like -dump-config slotConfig.xml as flex compiler argment. This generates a file for us... with lots of detailed comments like this one I generated from that project:
<flex-config>

What is the most proper way to store "global" constants for a flash app:
a static data class
a dynamic data class
a dynamic data class via getter/setter

I would have expected, given the way Adobe seems to do things, that you could reference some of the non-ASCII keycodes using a static constant, for example KeyCode.UP_KEY. Am I dreaming? Or do you just assume 38 will be the up key in perpetuity..?

I have a class that holds some constants and will receive an object literal (associative array) with some data like this:
var ConfigObj:Config = new Config({
"Some" : 10,
"Other" : 3,
"Another" : 5
});
The class looks like this:
public dynamic class Config
{
static public const SomeProperty:String = "Some";[code].....

Flash UI Components have many different styles to set, which require passing a string name to the setter method.while this certainly is not challenging, the use of a constants class would be beneficial but i can't find one.is there no constants class available with all of the possible style settings?

If I make multiple draw calls for various Program3D instances, is there a way that I can reset or nullify the constants if I'm no longer using them in the next following Program3D assignment?
Is it even necessary that I do something like this?
//Nullify 'vc0' in the vertex shader:
context3D.setProgramConstantsFromVector("vertex", 0, null);

Is there a way to compile SWC files in different targets (Debug vs. Release) similarly how you can compile a SWF file with the AS3 Conditional Compiler constants?
This link shows how SWF files can be compiled with predefined compiler constants:[URL]..
But I need to know how to achieve this with SWC files instead.
Note: I'm using FlashDevelop (Windows 7) to create the SWC (if that's any help to refine the answer).

We have developed a magazine reader which is basically PHP application. Admin panel is built in PHP but when any user wants to read a particular magazine, it is handled by Flash i.e. we are embedding the .swf object with HTML in PHP page. But flash is not supported in iPad/iPhone. So we want to create this application in Xcode so that user can read the magazine in iPhone/iPad also. There is confusion how it can be accomplished.

I'm making a Flash app in Flash 10 and ActionScript 2.0 and need support for calling an EXE with some params and minimizing/close the application.
Neither Adobe AIR nor Zinc don't seem to support some code I made and I'm looking for a very simple alternative? Does anyone know about any?

I want the content of a local text file to become available inside JavaScript. I've achieved that using HTML 5 FileReader API, but this works only in Mozilla Firefox and Chrome now. I know that it is possible to create a cross-broswer solution using Flash. Is there any open-source project that do that?

I'm currently loading a remote swf through as3 (with a domain policy to allow all from that domain - the policy file can't be changed by myself), that i want to take a snapshot of. The problem is that the main swf that i load, is loading child swf's from another domain that does not have the allow all policy turned on.. This makes the snapshot feature call a "sandbox security" error. I'm wondering if there's an alternative to the bitmapdata draw function to still take a "snapshot" without conflicting the sandbox security.

Ok we all know that you can embed assets with Flex using the [embed] code.
But is there anyway to achieve something similar to this when working with only Flash?
For example:I need to create a class (that contains certain assets) that needs to be used in the Flash IDE, but I don't want to have to drop all the assets into the library for every Flash file that happens to use the class.

I am running into some real problems with importing a png and associating it with a movieclip.Basically I want an image (image1.png) to appear inside a blank movieclip on my stage called "image1". I need this to all run from the library and not from an external folder - thus this does not work for me : loadMovie ("image1. png", "ClickReveal.image1");Is this possible? Or do I absolutely have to run from an external folder or convert the png to a movieclip by hand and then use attachMovie? I am desperately trying to avoid those options.The reason is that I am building a template file here and the users need to be able to import their own images which may be called anything and need to pop into movieclips.

I'm building a website at the moment and in the design it shows a scrollwheel in the form of this example.I've got no problem creating this using something like scrollable or some other similar plugins, however, they don't allow you to click and drag through the images and "flick" them in such a way as the flash example. Do you know of any plugins that allow you to do this, or even know how to modify something like Scrollable to do this?

I have previous experience with AS3, but not so much in web development. now I want to install a game in facebook, but since im very uninformed,i'm having a bad time chossing the best option. I have three alternatives to integrate my flash app in facebook.Adobe actionscript API: Until now, I tried it and worked for me to log in , get friends, and that kinda of basic. Has a ton of problems and bugs, and i decided to switch.
FMBS seems to be the best option, according to most people feedback in forums, but it's going to be deprecated and i don't want to invert effort and time in an option that is going to be dipossed.What do i have left ?, iframe ? Javascript ?

HTML5 seems promising, but I need something with more browser acceptance. I'm trying to avoid having to serve up difference video's based on user agents.
