Feb 3, 2010I am displaying a combo box in something of a WYSIWYG preview. I want the user to be able to click on the combo box and see the options inside, but I don't want them to be able to change the value. I tried using preventDefault() on the change event but it doesn't work. I don't want to disable it because I do want the user to be able to "look inside" the dropdown.
So I'm trying to block the change, but can't. My next resort is to change the selected index back to what it was before the change, Is there any way to do this within the scope of a ListEvent.CHANGE event listener?
Current Workaround is to basically re-assign the controls selected item the same way I am defining the selected item when I originally build it (a default selection). So a user sees their change then it immediately changes back to the default selection.

Sep 8, 2009I'm trying to setup a DataGrid that contains a column of combo boxes. The values of the combo boxes are defined by data specific to that row. I cannot get this to work though, I'm asking for a solution to this, either fixing what I have below or a recommendation on a different way.One of the columns of my DataGrid has an object derived from a ComboBox for an ItemEditor. The itemEditor is set like this:

Flash :: Assigning Icons To A ComboBox's List Using Dynamically-loaded External Images
Feb 5, 2010I'm trying to implement this for an instance of ComboBox specifically, which uses a List to display the dropdown menu full of items. Lists can have icons associated with them, as described in the documentation:

comboBox.dropdown.iconField = 'iconClass';
... assuming IconClass1 and IconClass2 are valid classnames of symbols in our library, this code works perfectly.
Here's my question - the contents of this ComboBox will be XML-driven, populated dynamically, and I'd really rather include that icon reference as a filename instead of a classname, so that when the whole thing is implemented, the icon can be changed in the XML without opening Flash and adding a new symbol to the library. Clients aren't generally good at that sort of thing.
Ideally, I'd like to be able to find a way to reference the container for the instance of that icon class - the ComboBox.dropdown is obviously keeping a reference to each list item somewhere, and if I can find it, I can load the icon images dynamically, then addChild them to the icon instance.

Mar 16, 2005Ok I can't find any doco on this and it's driving me crazy. Anyone know how you specify the default value for the V2 ComboBox component based on the selectedItem when you don't know the selectedIndex? Here's my scenario:
I have a hardcoded combobox called "dd_names" with 50 names in it. I'm returning a dataset into Flash via a SQL query, and onload I need the dd_names dropdown to default to the value of the name returned in the dataset. So if the query returns "Tom" I need the dropdown to default to "Tom."
I tried setting dd_names.selectedItem = "Tom" and dd_names.value = "Tom" and these don't work. The ComboBox just defaults to the first item in the list.However, if I use the selectedIndex property and set dd_names.selectedIndex = 3, the ComboxBox doesn't default to the first item in the list but shows the appropriate item. This doesn't help because I don't know the selectedIndex being returned from the query - I only know the selectedItem. Anyone know how to do this??

Flash - Populate Comboboxes INSIDE A Datagrid With UNIQUE Data IN?
Jan 21, 2011i've searched for several hours, and didn't find an answer for my problem. i'm trying to place comboboxes in a datagrid filled with DYNAMIC data. (the number and the content of these comboboxes always change. i don't know in advance how many columns there are, where i need to use comboboxes. so every single combobox gets a unique dataprovider, which comes from an external source, WHEN the program runs.)
-i found MANY threads discussing this problem, but solving via crappy mxml files, filling the comboboxes inside the sourcecode by hand. i want to point out, that isn't good for me.
-i found a better solution, in which they used some sort of custom itemrenderer to get the data from the internet. (kind of a country chooser thing) but sadly that wasn't good enough, because the number and name of the countries in the world are static more or less, they don't change. so their renderer class didn't depend on any parameters from the main algorithm.
but in my program i calculate the data in my own actionscript objects, then fill an arraylist with that. so at the beginning i load the desired data from the net, and when i get the response of the urlrequest, AFTER that i start to populate the datagrid/combobox.
i can fill any datagrid or combobox without trouble, but to put that combobox inside a datagrid cell seems to be impossible.it drives me crazy. i managed to do this in several languages before, c#, java, even php+html, but in flex it looks way too complicated then it should be.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash Change Preloader Animation Based On Internet Speed?
Aug 1, 2010I have 4 animations and based on the speed of the internet i want it to change between each depending on the speed.
e.g...
0 - 10kb/ps - 1st MC
11 - 30kb/ps - 2nd MC
31 - 50kb/ps - 3rd MC
50+ - 4th MC
My idea is to have like a glass of water... and for the 1st MC the water filling it up is only a drip... and then 2nd MC is a slow stream of water etc etc and then final MC is water gushing in filling the cup up faster until it's full...
I think this might be a bit hard for me... as i can't even make a preloader... everytime i try the SWF file just stays blank until it's fully loaded... haha... but i'll read tutorials and stuff... i'm rather basic with Flash and just learn what i need to learn as i get to it... I also need the transition between each change (say from 1-10kbps - 51+) to be smooth rather than just having it going from a drip to gushing water... but i think i'll just have to make animations for each and then IF statements to deal with that issue..

Dec 7, 2009I have a script that parses some complex XML. When the XML element is of a certain type, it generates a comboBox using the XML element's children to populate the box. I then want to check all of the values of the all the generated ComboBoxes against their correct answers (which is also info stored in the XML file). When creating the ComboBoxes, I added an "id" property. However, it seems that I cannot them use:
dynamicQuestion.id.selectedItem.labelField
to check the answers. However, I am able to get the labelField if I know the variable name used to create the ComboBox.

This indicates (to me) that I need to dynamically generate the variable name as I'm creating new instances of the ComboBox. But how do I dynamically generate a variable name? If I use
var thisBox:String = "box"+boxCount;
var newBox:ComboBox = thisBox as ComboBox;
I get an implicit coercion error. I also tried changing the creation statement to a function that accepted an argument, "thisBox," but this didn't work either. Conceptually, this seems quite simple, but I'm having a hard time putting it to practice. It seems that the comboBox's id is what is generated by created the box using script (e.g., var thisBox). How do I dynamically generate this name?

This works, and the combo box and its drop down get tinted.....EXCEPT when t_uintBgColor is white - 0xFFFFFF. What happens then is the combo box is just its default gray color.

Jun 25, 2008I am trying to change width of ComboBox instance. I want to change width of the original box, not the list. List width can be changed with inst.dropdownWidth=myWidth; ComboBox width can be changed by free transforming in Flash IDE, but that is not exactly ideal.
