I am looking for a way that can be used in my flash app to read a string from my local application, currently I am using activex to communication with the app and then pass that to flash. But I am wondering is there any alternatives that use pure flash techniques.

For example, giving them a "csv" button to click and it might present them with a save file dialog (and I would be sending the contents of my string variable).Is this possible / how ?I am using the ResuableFX component for the datagrid to csv. I am sending a string to asp from flash that looks like this;
[CODE].....
The problem is when asp (probably php too) reads this string, it reads it like this
[CODE]....
Now this sucks, is there a way to encrypt my flash string so asp will read the string corectly? I know asp is url encoding the flash string, but this bit of info does not seem to help.

As an alternate, the user could specify a file path for me, then I could open the text file and read it. Seems like this is a security risk and probably won't be allowed, but just checking. It looks like this is possible with flash 10?

I've been given a bit of a dog to work on. I'm upgrading a flash presentation that runs via an xml feed. I've added several dynamic flash graph generators external swfs through this data feed but can't seem to pass a query string to the flash presentation via this xml feed. This query string provides an alternate XML datasource for the graph generator.s
I would really like to be able to pass this query string as the current flash graph generators are running off a hardcoded xml filename and I would like to offer some flexibility. I've investigated further and the main presentation loads these extra "slides" with the loadMovie AS which should accept query strings but NOT locally. Is there a workaround to make loadMovie work with query strings locally? I can't run the presenation on a server!!

But when I test this code I get a "1084 Syntax error: expecting rightparen before .", so it seems it's reading Q3A as literally "q3a_chkbox.label" not "11q deletion" (or whatever). If I change the Q3A variable to simple text then it works fine,

This application communicates with another one done in c++, but just because I need a couple strings, so I thought it would be easy to write them to a .txt file and parse it. But the only way I've found so far is adding a browse event handler and select the file manually. That's no good for me, I need the file to be read automatically given a path, something like:

I'd expect the trace to be "Hello World" but rather is given "undefined". So if variables created outside functions are created on the main timeline, where are local function variables created and how would you access them?
I'm developing a game add-on/plugin which replaces a built in feature of an online game. The game loads an .swf therefore, my solution also has to be an swf for it to work 'in-game'.
I would like to be able to have the user press a button in the custom .swf I am making - and this would open an external application (amongst other things). I.e. if there was a button that said Notepad, it would open Notepad.exe on the machine.
My initial thinking was that i could have a XML Socket server 'daemon' runnning (c#) , which i could connect to with flash - however, as both the swf and the daemon are local, flash complained and gave this error: "Error #2010: Local-with-filesystem SWF files are not permitted to use sockets."
The only way i know to fix this - is to change the security settings of flash - not very user friendly!
So! Any thoughts on how I could otherwise go about this? I was thinking a custom http server could do the trick (connected with URLRequest) although i'm not too sure.
