Flash - Collecting High-volume Video Viewing Data?

Apr 5, 2010

I want to add tracking to our Flash-based media player so that we can provide analytics that show what sections of videos are being watched (at the moment, we just register a view when a video starts playing)

For example, if a viewer watches the first 30 seconds of a video and then clicks away to something else, we want the data to reflect that. Likewise, if someone watches the first 10 seconds, then scrubs the timeline to the last minute of the video and watches that, we want to register viewing on the parts watched and not the middle section.

My first thought was to collect up the viewing data in the player and send it all to the server at the end of a viewing session. Unfortunately, Flash does not seem to have an event that you can hook into when a viewer clicks away from the page the movie is on (probably a good thing - it would be open to abuse)

So, it looks like we're going to have to make regular requests to the server as the video is playing. This is obviously going to lead to a high volume of requests when there are large numbers of simultaneous viewers.

The simple approach of dumping all these 'heartbeat' events from clients to a database feels like it will quickly become unmanageable so I'm wondering whether I should be taking an approach where viewing sessions are cached in memory and flushed to database when they become inactive (based on a timeout). That way, the data could be stored as time spans rather than individual heartbeats.

Get A High Quality Video Into A Flash Document?

Mar 20, 2009

I'm trying to get a high quality video into a flash document. I would like it to stream the flv from the website it will be posted on.

The source file is a 640x480 quicktime file (H264 compression)however viewing it at 640x480, I notice that there is pixelation instead of a clean and crisp image, I look at the source, it's clean and crisp. how can I import a nice high quality video into flash without that nasty pixelation?

Actionscript 3.0 :: Flash Video Playback - High Cpu Usage

May 12, 2009

I've been deploying video to the web via Flash for a couple years now and I was curious if anyone has experience with / knows if deploying video via a Flash Media Server or any other type of video centric server has a significant impact on performance playback? I've noticed lately that with YouTube content, often available in "HQ" or "HD" that the video playback suffers very marginally when switching to higher quality video. However, with video players I have developed, using HTTP progressive download, CPU usage often spikes during download of the video and decreases once it's been cached. I've also recently employed pseudo-streaming techniques with the help of XMOOV but this doesn't seem to have much of an effect on CPU usage during video download.

My video player was developed in AS3 and while it's not using a class based structure, it does follow general OOP techniques. Would a class based video player improve performance? Here is a link to a work in progress video player: [URL] Please try a couple videos and let me know if they play back smoothly and / or if you notice CPU spikes. Also note that the only video that makes use of XMOOV is the "Make a Wish" video as it's been injected with the necessary metadata.

Flash :: Resizing A High Resolution Video To A Smaller Size?

Nov 2, 2011

My company sent me a video that they wanted us to post on the intranet.  It's a simple powerpoint video with a narrator talking about some policy and benefit changes, etc.

I tried the exporting the video in both 720(width) and 1280 format, and found that when shown in fullscreen mode, the 1280 format was much easier to read than the 720, however, we didn't want to show it on the intranet page at full 1280 by default.  So I modified the html and javascript that plays the movie so that it would show in 720 width on the page.  The problem with resizing the 1280 video into a 720 space is that the video player bar (where the play, stop, volume controls are) becomes extremely small when I do this.  Of course, this is because Flash generated the player with a toolbar optimized for 1280, so it's getting scaled down when I pack it into a smaller playing area.

Is there an solution to this that I haven't thought of?  How can I generate this movie to get the better full screen appearance of the 1280 video, but also still show the video in a smaller 720 area when the user is not in full screen mode?

Professional :: Convert The Video To Flv For Delivery (viewing) Via The Internet?

Feb 5, 2011

I use FCE to edit video. I then convert the video to flv for delivery (viewing) via the Internet. I've read lots of discussion on how to create the flv. I've tried various methods, including:

1) Since I have Flash installed on my computer, I've used FCE's Quicktime conversion to export/encode directly to flv, and

2) Export an uncompressed QT movie from FCE; then used Flash Video Encoder to convert the .mov to .flv

What's best practice (I'm open to other procedures too)?

I've used a standard skin on an FLVplayback component which loads and plays perfectly. The problem arises when I enter fullscreen mode and then leave it again. Once I've done this, the video remains on the stage irrespective of what frame I'm on. I can even change scenes and the video remains in the middle. I haven't even added the video using actionscript so I don't really understand how it could possibly stay on more than the frame its inserted in!? At the moment I've used no ActionScript to control the video. I apologise if I'm missing something, this is the first time I've dealt with videos.

Increase (youtube Flash) Video's Sound Volume By Means Of Script?

Jul 30, 2011

Background story: many users (including me) browse the web from notebooks that are not constructed for sound performance. That means (besides other things) that the sound volume for most videos is too low, especially if the video itself is recorded at low volume.

Therefore...

I was wondering if there is any way of increasing the volume of such a video (especially Youtube, but could be extended to other types), because I'm interested in doing it and even publishing it as Firefox/Chrome/other browser plug-in.

Data Integration :: Getting High-res PDF With Transparency From SWF

Oct 18, 2007

I'm an art student and have produced some pieces in Flash 8. Now I've been asked for a high-quality (i.e. a letter-sized print at 600dpi) image, but the animation uses transparency.

I've been able to generate vector-based PDFs that I can blow up to as big as I want with no quality loss, but the transparency dissappears.

When I conserve the transparency, I get something that'll print at about 1/10 the size I need at 600dpi.

If it's not possible from the Flash Player (or from Flash 8), then does anyone know of an alternate program that'll do this for me (preferably free or cheap)?

Flex :: AS3 Video Encoding At Runtime With High Compression

Sep 15, 2010

I need to compress video image data (lets say a display object) in AS3 to a Byte Array with high compression at runtime. Framerate only needs to be around 5 but 1024x768 video needs to go to < 40 Kilobyte per Second without the quality being too bad. I wrote a custom encoder and got it to around 80-100 Kilobyte per Second for 1024*768 which still is too much and I don't see a lot of improvements to be mad to my encoder.

Using JPG or PNG Encoder gives way higher KB/s. Is there any open source way to to decode and encode video in as3 at runtime ? E.g. a H.264 as3 encoder and decoder ? Or other codecs? Or maybe a C# source code of h.264 encoder and decoder ? I think I could port it to as3. Doesnt need to be h.264, just something with good quality when running at 5 Frames/Sec and 40 Kilobyte...

Flash :: Volume Slider - Volume Doesn't Change Until Mouse Over?

Nov 21, 2009

I've created a small music player with a sliding volume control. I'm having trouble with the volume. Though it does control volume properly, if I set the initial volume to less than 100%, the volume always starts at 100% until I move my mouse over the player. At that point, the volume changes to whatever the initial volume is set to.Is this a flash bug, or am I missing something? Here is the affected code (code for other buttons/functions omitted for brevity):

var song_initvolume:Number = 100;
slider_1._x = groove_1._x + song_initvolume;
playSong(0,song_play);[code]....

I'd like to be able to set the volume at say 50%, but the above mentioned behavior happens each time.

Flash :: Reverse Sound Volume Math For Volume Slider?

Feb 1, 2010

I'm building a video player and am kinda stuck at the volume slider part. It's a YouTube style vertical slider, meaning if the slider is in the top position volume should be 100% and if the slider is dragged to the bottom position sound should be 0. Currently it's doing the opposite of what I want :(

Dragging the slider down will make the sound louder, while dragging up lowers it.

Here is my code below dealing with the volume slider.

[Code]....

The (-4) is an offset value so when you drag it all the way to turn it off, it's 0 and not 4. I need to reverse this somehow, so the traces above will swap... going down will make userVolume = 4 and going up will make it 30.

Media Server :: Recording High Quality Video Using A Local Buffer With FMS 3.5

Jun 16, 2010

I'm currently working on a webcam recorder to record high quality video. I had the recorder working before, but the video quality was quite poor. Instead I'm trying to use a client side buffer and then upload the buffer after recording has stopped. I thought after I unattached the video and audio from the NetStream that either a NetStream.Buffer.Empty or NetStream.Record.Stop event would be sent when the buffer was finished uploading.

What is actually happening after I start recording is two NetStream.Record.Stop events are being sent in a row, so recording never really happens. Also, on the server side I'm trying to save a user name and password into a variable, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that since the application script is just a bunch of callback functions.

Flex :: Using NetConnection And URLStream To Send/receive Data At High Frequency

Jun 17, 2009

I'm writing a Comet-like app using Flex on the client and my own hand-written server.

I need to be able to send short bursts of data from the client at quite a high frequency (e.g. of the order of 10ms between sends).

I also need the server to push short bursts of data at a similarly high frequency.

I'm using NetConnection.call() to send the data to the server, and URLStream (with chunked encoding) to push the data from the server to the client.

What I've found is that the data isn't being sent/received as soon as it's available. For example, in IE, it seems the data is sent every 200ms rather than as soon as NetConnection.call() is called. Similarly, URLStream isn't making the data available as soon as the server is sending it.

Judging by the difference in behaviour between the browsers, it seems as though the Flash Player (version 10) is relying on the host browser to do all the comms. Can anyone confirm this? Update: This is very likely as only the host browser would know about the proxy settings that might be set.

I've tried using the Socket class and there's no problem with speed there: it works perfectly. However, I'd like to be able to use HTTP-based (port 80) connections so that my app can run in heavily fire-walled environments (I tried using a Socket over port 80, but that has its problems).

Incidentally, all development/testing has been done on an internal LAN, so bandwidth/latency is not an issue.

Update: The data being sent/received is in small packets and doesn't need to be in any particular format. For example, I might need to send a short array of Numbers, and this could either be encoded in AMF (e.g. via NetConnection.call()) or could be put into GET parameters (e.g. using sendToURL()). The main point of my question is really to see whether anyone else has experienced the same problem in calling NetConnection/URLStream frequently, and whether there is a workaround (it's also possible that the fault lies with my server code of course, rather than Flash).
