Flex - Make Changes Not Tied To A State In Design Mode In Flash Builder 4?

If I have a component that has some states defined, is there a way to make changes in design mode but not have it tied to a particular state? For example, if I have state1 and state2, any changes in design mode will be based on state1 or state2 (i.e. width.state1). I understand this is the direction Flex is going in but I'm transitioning from a Flex 3 app and right now I just want to make the change to width and not width.state1.

It's my understanding that view states can be useful when switching the layout of design elements. Such as, a loading page as one state and the main application design in another state. Is this the correct use of them? Additionally, I have a label in State1 and I cannot figure out how to access that label via actionscript. labelID.text = "New Text"; is not working.

I am currently using Flex (Flash Builder 4) and making web service connections to a Apache PHP Zend AMF server to retrieve data. This works great, but I am wondering what options are available for fault tolerance. I know I can probably set up a second server that the application would switch to in the event it is unable to reach the first server. I am also thinking about trying to give each individual machine some tolerance.
For example, if they at least had the ability to input data to the application, that would be a start. So if they click 'save' and it can not reach the server, it caches it or stores it to a local file until the server is back up. Though lack of being able to do data look-ups might be a big problem. Maybe there are already some libraries or something I can look at to do this?

I was editing a very basic mobile Flex project, and after I debugged the master (application) mxml file, Design View stopped working (blank screen displayed, no Design View errors) for all files. Creating new projects, either mobile or else, or testing old, working projects, doesn't work either. Out of the related issues I've found info on, most concern earlier versions of the IDE, and deal with either Design View errors (got none), use of certain functions or custom components (I get the error even on a new project), or are solved by changing styles back-and-forth (tried already, to no avail).
I can't drag and drop components to the design area, either (a "prohibited" symbol appears and nothing happens when I drop); so I'm pretty sure it's not code-related or a bug, but probably something stupid, like a configuration issue, so I definitely need someone to take a fresh look at it.

Flash Builder's design view is worse than 3's (which at least was usable if you ignore some quirks), so WHAT do Flex UI designers (those who don't have paid design teams...) do to design a complex UI? Because Design View (also based on what a lot of people say about it..) gets more useless with every release.See image for some differences in design view vs.Flash. WHAT is causing this? css also posted..("Duration", "hr", "min" are mx Labels, the image size text is an mx Text comp.Project is an "mx only" SDK 4.1 project.) I don't even care that the spinners look different, I just need it to show me correctly sized stuff so I can position things via Canvas, or properly size containers.

In my Flash Builder (Flex) 4.6 app, I just noticed for some reason all my "s:Window" components will not allow me to click and select anything in design mode in flash builder!
My other non-window type components are fine - I can open a TitleWindow or Group for example and click on the various fields and labels no problem.
In my Window components, I can select an item in the 'outline' window, but not using the mouse and actually clicking on the component in the visual design window. When I click in there, it looks like it's selecting the actual 'window' box. Almost like it needs to be 'sent to back' or something.

Does anyone know if there is a way to make the new Package Explorer window in Flash Builder emulate Flex Builders 'Flex navigator' window?
Bottom line is I don't always need to peer into SWC's, and I don't like having a 'default package' automatically created for me. Not sure why the interface wasn't made simpler, allowing access to more power and complexity only if necessary. I want to focus on the code, not on how to navigate and use the bells and whistles in the coding environment.

I am exporting an SWC via Flash Professional CS5 version 11.0.0.485 with the latest Flex Component Kit (2.0.0) installed in the Extension Manager. In Symbol properties, I'm Exporting for Actionscript in Frame 1 with the Class name equal to the Symbol name.
I've imported the SWC into Flash Builder 4.6 with all the different available SDKs.
With all of them I get an error in Design Mode
"SWC File Failed to load. Any component dependent on this SWC will not be displayed in the design mode."
If I instantiate the component via the Source it runs ok and in the browser I see the component.
I know I could just say "whatever, I don't need Design mode" but I'd like to know what is happening.
Any ideas?

I have a set of users who run my application in non debug mode. Off late they have been reporting lot of issues. But I am not able to debug as there is no log file.Is it possuible in flex 3 to do logging in a file without running in debug version. I understand trace only works if we run application in debug version.

I am developing a web app using Flash Builder. A graphic designer came up with some designs for the app but I have never converted a photoshop document into a Flex skin or for that matter made a custom Flex skin by any means. Is it possible to take the photoshop work and put it into Flash or something? What exactly goes into Flex skins? If I were to contact this out, how much am I looking to spend on a 8 page app?

I have an Actionscript class we'll call Person to make the example easy. I want to have a DataGrid populated with Person objects that has columns displaying things like Name, Birthday, etc. All that is nice and simple, but I would also like to add a checkbox column to select certain people in the DataGrid. An example use case would be as follows:
Display all people. User checks a box next to each person indicating they want some action taken on those selections. Some action is taken on the user selections when the user clicks a button.
It seems like the common solution to this is to make a Selected property on each Person object, but that isn't really a good option for me. The Person object is used throughout the application, and it seems very unclean to have a Selected property which really isn't a concern of the Person class.
I like the type safety of having hard classes like Person, but I don't know how to solve this seemingly simple problem so I can loop through the objects and determine if the person is selected or not.

There are three modes to link an SWC library to a flex application: "Merged into code", "External" and "RSL". I understand what is "RSL", but I don't understand what is "External"."RSL" works just fine for me, without any code changes. However, External doesn't work for me. Although my application starts, the classes in the SWC set to External are never found.What is the meaning of "External" if it is not "RSL" ? How do I make use of that ?

I wanted to make a video player that has normal mode and fullscreen mode. The part I am having trouble understanding is how to handle the video once it gets set to fullscreen. I am creating a custom TextInput component that will define an "error" state. I have extended the TextInput class to change the state to "error" if the errorString property's length is greater than 0. In the skin class, I have defined an "error" state, and added some logic to detect the size and position of the error icon. However, if I have this code at the same time I use the "includeIn" property in the bitmap image tag, I get a design view error. If I either A) Only include that code with no "includeIn" property set, it works or B) dont include the code to set the icon size and position and only use the "includeIn" property, it works. Any ideas what could be causing the design view problem when I use both the "includeIn" property and the icon size/position code at the same time?

Is there any way to get Flex Builder to connect to an existing browser session running Flash Player Debugger? I can connect to FDB like this, but with Builder I need to click Debug and rush to close the newly opened browser window before it loads the Flash file and then go back to the session I want to connect and right click it to start the debugger.
Unfortunately this is not very reliable as I can't always beat the window opening, requiring several attempts before being able to connect to the session I am interested in. If I could just tell Builder 'Start debugging' and then have it wait for the connection, I could now calmly go over to the browser, right click, hit debug, provide the IP and voila. This would allow me to inspect variables on a hard to replicate bug on a session running on a tester's computer.

So yahoo astra has grate compohent for saving inputed data. They show examples of how to use it. But I had not found one capable to solve my current problem. For example user inputed his name. I have a XML record that contains specific info for each state.<stateID>01</stateID
I am trying to link the stateID's in the XML record to the state movieClips that make up the map.var stateInstanceName = 'S_' + stateID;
I was just trying to do a simple trace command to see if I could pull the _width of each state clip to see if I was linked up:

I just upgraded to Flash Builder 4 (beta 2) from Flex Builder 3 which I have been using since it came out. Problem: All the projects that were in my workspace from Flex Builder 3 did not carry over into Flash Builder 4 (e.g. in the "Flex Navigator" view if FB3). Flash Builder 4 now uses the .FXP format to manage projects, but Flex Builder 3 did not. Is there an easy way to get all my projects back into Flash Builder 4?

I am trying to get converted to Actionscript 3 from AS2.In old versions of flash, you simply placed the sound in a keyframe inside the button on the over or down state. Worked fine, but not anymore.I guess the sound must be set up with actionscript and a listener.I understand linkage. how to make one sound on the over state and a different one on the down state?
