Have you had success building desktop apps with these? Or would you stick with Swing for now and use tools to help make Swing development more productive?
View 6 RepliesI'm going to write an application with the Air/Flex-Framework. I'm looking for Best Practise and general Design Patterns for designing software especially in Air/Flex. I have experience with this framework but never had the pleasure to write a piece of software from scratch.
For instance: I stumbled across lots of software written in Air/Flex with nearly infinity global vars Most of the software I saw was not object-oriented How can I pack the asynchronous method calls nicely?
I'm familiar with general design patterns by gamma. I'm looking more for advise in designing good quality software with Adobe Air/Flex.
I cannot afford the Creative Suite or Flex Builder but I would like to develop a commercial Flex/ActionScript AIR application. Is this a viable goal and are there robust tools out there that don't cost a small fortune?

Following are the constraints.
I need to print to a DotMatrix Printer. I have a complex layout with header, footer and a datagrid with data rolling out to more that one page. I need to have a template to which I will be passing my object.The suffice with the usage of Jasper reports, but I have no server side support.I tried the FlexReport, bentbit and other tools which is optimized for the DotMatrix printers.
Is there a alternative to get the above requirements done. Is there any alternative similar to that of jasper reports without going for a server.
Is it possible to get list of installed AIR applications, optionally only by one vendor?
Or, is it possible to check, whether is one application (checked by name/some id/vendor) installed (this method would be preferred)
Is it possible to make applications for iPhone using Adobe Flex/AIR?
View 5 RepliesI am currently in the process of making a flash layout. I am working on finding out how to create smooth transitions between pages. I know how to get from page a to page b but the transitioning is not working right. Is there some actionscript code I could use to make it so when you press a button it gotoAndPlays the transitioning movie and then shows the page.
View 1 RepliesI'm pretty familiar with using Adobe Flex & AS3, and compared with writing apps in JS/HTML I think it's very cool. However, since AIR is essentially a non-browser version of Flex with benefits like local storage, it seems to be competing as a cross-platform desktop application platform... and in that space it's much less mature than more established desktop technologies.
So what's the advantage of creating a desktop application using AIR compared to something like Java (or C++ using a cross-platform GUI library like wxWidgets)? Java's equally capable of communicating with the server for instance, I'm not quite sure what AIR adds when competing head-to-head in the desktop development world?
I use Flex 4 wish I can let users drag/drop photos from their computer to the web app to upload them automatically.

What are the some other alternatives I can use? I want to be able to do simple boolean and phrase queries. Support for stemming would be great but not required. I am targeting the mobile platforms.
So far I've thought of three options:
Write a simple inverted index and a scorer Do search on server side (last resort b/c it messes up offline capability) Somehow install FTS module with AIR. First indication from googling is that its not feasible (looks like loading of modules is disabled in air)

But when I'm trying dynamically create horizontal and vertical axis then I'm getting extra axes. I believe this is Adobe bug. How I can fix this behavior?

I would like to get a windows explorer like file browser to popup when I click a button to select images to upload to my AIR application.However I cannot find a component that handles File exploring. This Project consists of a CORE application, and other sub-applications.The CORE application should contain information that will be shared by all other projects (e.g., link to database, data manager which loads data from the database, application information like height width colors fonts... etc.).
The sub-applications each has a certain task. Each sub-application is a large project by itself so I don't think its a good idea to put all code inside one HUGE project.The CORE project should run the main application, and through a navigation menu, I should be able to click and run other sub-applications.Is there a way to created the CORE application to reference those sub-applications so that I can run them inside of the CORE. At the same time, those sub-applications should reference the CORE applications to get the NetConnection to the database and other important information that they might share?

For some reason though, my DragInitiator and the currentTarget of my event are the same... even though I am obviously moving from list to list... Does anyone have an example of a function that I can call on my "dragComplete" event that will tell me the current target which will give me the id of the List object I am dropping on?This is my current function which is always returning true...

I would like to know if there is a way to drag and drop an attachment file from an outlook email that is open into an AIR application and for that file to be then accessible to the AIR application. When I experimented with this the drag operation is giving AIR a File Promise List. But I'm not exactly sure how to make use of it once it is dropped. All the examples out there explain how to manupilate File Promises from an AIR application to the desktop. Nothing that explains a file promise into an AIR app.

I have this project for school where i have to populate a drop down list control from an xml file.I mange to do that for a label/text input control, but i can't seem to do that on a drop down.I get this error any time i tell him to "additem" with an xml query (not getting it with simple text):"#1009 Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference"[code]...
View 1 RepliesWhen a combobox is elected in the flex app, there is a quick flicker, then the combobox needs to be selected again in order to get the dropdown to open. After that, the dropdown works as expected, but only while selecting the control subsequent times while on the form. Reloading the form requires the double selection again.

I have two lists and a canvas. When dropping a list item onto the canvas, i want to trace what item it is (the label and data) and which list it came from. From there, i want to add an image to the canvas according to the dropped item.
