Most of the desktop application development I do is in Swing, and I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on using JavaFX and/or Adobe Flex for building desktop applications. Have you had success building desktop apps with these? Or would you stick with Swing for now and use tools to help make Swing development more productive?

View 1 RepliesThere is an ongoing argument on the web right now about the "openness" of the iPhone OS and Adobe Flash platforms. Adobe's argument is that anyone can build a Flash application without having to worry about being allowed to distribute it.
This made me wonder... is it possible to build and distribute an AIR application without giving any money to Adobe (without violating any licenses, of course)? Are any of these tools free? Are any open-source?
Can Flex be used for a desktop application whose business logic is written using Java? Everything I've read about flex uses a remoting or http protocol to communicate with the backend via a J2EE server, so I'm not sure how that would work for a desktop app (unless an embedded j2ee server was running in the app).

But since I am butt-hurt with the way Adobe have handled Flash in general, I am looking to write it using some different tool.So far, Java Swing looks rubbish (UI-wise I mean). Others aren't cross platform and often too complicated.

Following are the constraints.
I need to print to a DotMatrix Printer. I have a complex layout with header, footer and a datagrid with data rolling out to more that one page. I need to have a template to which I will be passing my object.The suffice with the usage of Jasper reports, but I have no server side support.I tried the FlexReport, bentbit and other tools which is optimized for the DotMatrix printers.
Is there a alternative to get the above requirements done. Is there any alternative similar to that of jasper reports without going for a server.
I have a client-server multigame suite for PC ("kind of" cross-platform using cygwin), which is developed in Java(game menus and database management), C++ (server side), and adobe Flash (game graphics & interaction).
I have never tried to develop for android, so i have no experience.I am thinking of migrating this suite to google TV. So i would like someone with android experience to give a clue on the following :
1) Is it going to be easy to migrate the Java application to an Android application?
2) What kind of Flash support does Android have? Can it load directly swf applications? Does it have to load swf's through browser?
3) Can i find any kind of performance indexes for google TV hardware?

View 5 RepliesI'm pretty familiar with using Adobe Flex & AS3, and compared with writing apps in JS/HTML I think it's very cool. However, since AIR is essentially a non-browser version of Flex with benefits like local storage, it seems to be competing as a cross-platform desktop application platform... and in that space it's much less mature than more established desktop technologies.
So what's the advantage of creating a desktop application using AIR compared to something like Java (or C++ using a cross-platform GUI library like wxWidgets)? Java's equally capable of communicating with the server for instance, I'm not quite sure what AIR adds when competing head-to-head in the desktop development world?
In adobe air, is there anyway to get OS open a file, in their native applications?

What are the some other alternatives I can use? I want to be able to do simple boolean and phrase queries. Support for stemming would be great but not required. I am targeting the mobile platforms.
So far I've thought of three options:
Write a simple inverted index and a scorer Do search on server side (last resort b/c it messes up offline capability) Somehow install FTS module with AIR. First indication from googling is that its not feasible (looks like loading of modules is disabled in air)

I'm building a multiplayer card game using Flex on the client side and Java on the server side and I wanted to know if I must sockets and the accept method in order to connect users to the server for in order for them to join a game room or create one or to chat.In the past I've learned how to build a game server which both sides are JAVA and connection was in sockets but now days the client side will be in FLEX which has few ways to connect to a Java server (XML,SOAP,BLAZEDS(AMF)) and I find it hard to understand how to write the Java server in order to do all the features of a game server,especially managing the rooms and sending data back to the users.
In the sockets way, when a user was connecting to the server and he had opened a room, this room was opened on a thread and who ever was joined that room then he was connected to the same thread and sending the messages to the right place was easy, so the problem is understanding how to do the same using SOAP or BLAZEDS.
I'm having trouble with building iOS applications in flash. I just bought an iPad and want to start building apps for it. I hav done simple apps for iPhone before but nothing too fancy. The problem is, I can build it and compile it fine but when I try to install on my device it comes up with the error saying:
"ITunes: 'APPNAME' failed to install." I can compile it as an iPhone app and it works fine. I'm pretty sure I've got my provisioning right because I have both my iPhone and iPad devices added. Anyone got any ideas of why my apps only work while I compile them as iPhone apps?

View 2 RepliesI'm currently in the planning/early building phase of a desktop flex application that will be communicating to a Zend Application on a web server.The flex app will basically be like a layout/view in terms of the MVC pattern, it will make requests to various controller actions and display the data returned in a meaningful way, and post data that will update various data in the database on the server. Basically what I'm wondering is what the best way is to go about building a login system for the desktop application.I can't use the regular channels that you would if your users were accessing the application via a browser, so I was thinking I would do this:
Flex app posts login details (email, password) to a login action.The login action uses Zend Auth to check if the details are valid.The login action creates a unique hash (and stores it in the db somewhere along with the user's id) and returns a json object containing the hash along with the user's id to the flex app.Whenever the flex app makes requests to any action in the web app, it also sends along the user's id and the unique hash so the web app can verify the user.
I am a senior IT student working on a mobile application for Android. I have 2.5 months design to complete implementation.App basics:
-Seismographer app
-Record data from accelerator
-Visualize data in a live fashion on a graph
-Connect several phones together via bluetooth/wifi to sync up the data
-Geo-aware application - optional
I have limited java knowledge and mainly specialize in system admin and web development. Given my constraints, is it better for me to use Adobe AIR/Flex/ActionScript to develop this? Or Google SDK/Java would take just as long?I feel like on one hand Adobe is faster, but Java is more straightforward?

View 1 RepliesWhat is the best solution for multi threading in flex, I notice if I play a mp3 in flex and do something else at the same time something ends up giving out, either the song stops playing or the UI hangs for about a split second. It doesn't have that fluid response that I am looking to achieve. If possible I would like to call a multi threaded java class to do some of the client-side end back end processing. I just don't know if that is possible.

I would like to use Java Springs framework at the back end. The web application caters to students a Music school. And for the same reason we chose Flex for UI since the application needs to be flashy and rich in graphics.
The application allows students to create profiles and interact with the teacher. Eventually we want to add Online Music classes feature with online payment gateway integrated. Kindly guide me which are the suitable technologies to use at the back end. Also let me know if SpringFlex with BlazeDS integration is a good combination with Adobe Flex.
