I have an editable combobox. How can I bind the text the user enters? I can only do binding when the user selects whatever it is they typed in...how can I bind it as they type?

I am working on a simple math game for kids. It is nearly complete but the problem I have is that when the user enters their answer in the input textfield, the numbers are entered from left to right. Most people do math problems from right to left. Is there a way to make the numbers appear from right to left? I am thinking that I would have to use an eventlistener on the number keys and also use parse text or arrays somehow to manipulate the numbers.

I have a project in which i need to pop up an alert to the user before a combobox value is changed. This feature is to allow the user to stay in current state if modifications were not saved. Meaning that the user will be able to cancel the change. I have sub classed ComboBox and tried to hook on ITEM_CLICK of ComboBox.dropdown but this event is triggered after the value is changed. Also, I've tried MOUSE_CLICK ans MOUSE_DOWN but without success.
In my code, I have added a "preChange" event to my CustomComboBox. This event should be triggered before a change is made. Also, I've introduced a method called commitChange that will be called manually to actually commit the change.

View 1 RepliesI currently have a slideshow-style navigation site. There are five buttons on the bottom and when the user clicks each button, it triggers a nested movieclip to play. I would like the button to be highlighted when the corresponding movieclip is playing, but when they click another button and another movieclip plays, I want the button to go back to its original color.
The problem is that the movieclips that are playing are nested two levels down and the buttons have to be on the main timeline. I think I might need an event listener to see if a certain nested movieclip is playing, to know to change the button color. It seems to easy but I can't figure it out,

First of all, props to Informatik at Actionscript.org for the following code. This is a profanity filter that will perform an action when it detects a word from an array. The problem is, it fails when the user enters only a single word:

The code uses split(" ") to detect a space which is obviously causing the problem of failing to detect one word offenders. But without this, the filter would detect profanity in a word like "assets".

Is action script needed for this?.

I have a project in Flash Mx 2004. On the first frame there is a menu with 4 menu items. When the user clicks an item, they are taken to another frame with some text and an exit button that takes them back to the menu. The forward button will not become active until all of the menu items have been viewed. There is no particular order for the items to be viewed, just that they all be viewed before the forward arrow is active and the user can continue. I tried puttin an action on the exit button to disable the related menu item, however, the item just resets back to enabled each time a user re-enters the frame.

One detail is driving me nuts though - most likely due to my lack of knowledge in the subject - is that if I try to add a new item to my dataprovider in a changeHandler (registered to the change event) the text for the ComboBox textInput disappears - although the item addition works perfectly. Interestingly enough the same operation works fine if it gets called by clicking on a button, i.e. post the change event has been processed, and the text does not disappear.[code]if you take out the change handler you will see that adding a new item and then clicking on the button keeps the new element in the textInput while adding the item to the data provider, which does not happen if you just enter a new item and press enter.
View 1 RepliesI'm trying to set a specific list item in a mx combobox to have a custom item renderer, the problem is that I cannot do this via mxml, it needs to be done via actionscript at a later stage, eg: combobox gets created, combobox gets populated, user does other tasks, combobox needs to set one or more items in the combobox to have icons (via item renderer)..
I can do this via the onChange event, but it only applies the icon when the combobox is opened and there is a slight delay so you can see the icon being added.
I've created a ComboBox skin by extending mx.skins.ProgrammaticSkin. It's working fine, except I can't figure out how to limit the width of the text. Is there a way to control this within the skin?

It's a very useful component and works very well.
Now, I need to set the text property of this combo box upon application startup with certain values (which are defined dynamically according to some criteria). The problem is that although I have no problem setting the text property of the combo box at other times of the application run, setting the property at startup seems to have no effect unfortunately.
For example, I want to set the text property of the combobox to "Bob" (which is one of the items in the dataprovider for the combobox) and the "set text" method is called on the combo box. Performing a step-through shows that the "set text" method is receiving the correct value item but not setting the _text property.
I have tried not doing anything until "ApplicationComplete" but no joy there either.
Here is the code (a combination of the code from the URL above and some other changes to it). However, as I've stated above, the codes does work. The problem is that it doesn't work at the application startup. Whenever an event is fired and setComboText is called as a result, the text of the combo box is set correctly.

I have successfully loaded and parsed the XML data that I need. I would now like to build a dynamic symbol that displays the data. It is a list of managers. I would like to display their names, organizations, etc... I assume a label would be best, binding the appropriate XML node to the text attribute of a label? I'm not sure, but that sounds the most reasonable. I can't seem to find and examples of doing this in AS3 however. Does anyone know how I would accomplish this task?

I am having a table at the backend, so when a query is asked at the frontend for an object, all the tabs in the front end should be populated with the details of the query object. I am able to pick the query object at the back end , but i dont know how to bind that object across all the tabs in flex.
