But, I would also like to know where the character was typed: the (text)cursor position.I've read about that it's easy to do with a TextField, however, I want to use a TextArea for a few reasons:
I've read about it being possible with a TextField, but I'm not sure how I would make that into an input field.
How can I make a TextField behave like a TextArea?

Jun 21, 2011I have a text area control on a form that is supposed to accept 5 digit US zip codes. I have assigned the control a keyUp event that checks the number of characters entered until it reaches 5 then forces a new line.

It works fine except that when the new line is inserted, the cursor moves to the beginning of the textarea. I want it to go to the end.

I've found this method for Spark but seems a bit kludgy:

Is there a more straightforward way to do this?

I just need to make the tween's position relative to it's current position, as opposed to starting at the stage's 0 position then moving the the stage's -40 position. It needs to start at its current position the move -40 from that position.

Mar 17, 2010I have a combobox implementation as follows - Based on user input (min 2 chars) in the editable combobox, the data provider is refreshed and drop-down opened, showing different data sets as user input varies.Problem is that after drop-down opens, the cursor moves back to the beginning. So for instance, the user types in "ab", and wants to type in "c" to form the search string "abc". Due to the cursor re-setting its position to 0, the search string instead ends up as "cab".Here's what I tried already (doesn't work) : textInput.mx_internal::getTextField().setSelection(index, index);
where index = length of user input. This selects text from index to index (which effectively un-selects text) and is supposed to place the cursor at the end.

Nov 23, 2011I am using Flex 4 and AS3 and I am trying to make it so that the user can draw a freehand line with the cursor - I have this part done.However, I also need the line to be a dashed line instead of one solid line like it is now. below is my code I am using. I have found some examples on how to do this, but they are all for straight lines, not for a freehand line.

Nov 12, 2009I have an Input Text area that users can edit and then submit. I need to be able to show, on screen, the cursor's current position as they type. I don't need to know where the mouse is but all work-arounds I've found so far can only tell me the mouse position. The font for the text is 'courier' or 'courier new' and the Input Text area is scrollable.

Dec 10, 2009Imagine that I make a movie clip that looks like a chess board, and that inside that move board I place other movie clips that look like pieces.Now imagine that I tilt the chessboard so that you are no longer looking at it top down and rotate it so that the dark pieces are first in front of you and and this slowly changes until the white ones are, etc.In order to make this look right I have to rearrange the stacking order of the movie clips (which pieces are "on top" of which other pieces when they are drawn). But when the clip rotates, the mc.z value for all the clips does not change. Neither does the width or height which I thought I could use instead even though they are clearly looking bigger or smaller onscreen.I think that I might just be getting the z point relative to the other children of the rotating movieclip. Is there any way to get the z point relative to the stage?

Jun 16, 2009Is there a way to tell if a Flex TextArea has a blinking cursor? One indication is if the component is focused: focusManager.getFocus() == textArea
But it's possible to have a blinking cursor without having the focus. I'm not sure if the converse is possible (focus without blinking cursor).
Edit: The rub here appears to be a distinction between "component-level" focus and "player-level" focus (per the FocusManager docs). I haven't yet found any great explanation of the latter or APIs to it.
