Flex :: Programmatically Scroll To The End Of A Spark Textarea When A New Line Is Added?
Sep 6, 2011
The old method for the mx:TextArea no longer works. Specifically:
myMxTextArea.verticalScrollPosition = myMxTextArea.maxVerticalScrollPosition;
I've found this method for Spark but seems a bit kludgy:
mySparkTA.scrollToRange(mySparkTA.text.length-1, mySparkTA.text.length);
Is there a more straightforward way to do this?

Consider the following mx:TextArea <mx:TextArea id="textArea"/>
periodically being updated with new lines of text using ..
textArea.text += newLineBeingAdded + "
";
how do I make sure the textarea is scrolled down to the bottom so that the last line added is visible to the user?

I have a spark skinnable component which contains a datagroup with images. The datagroup is scrolled by hovering the mouse over it. Everything works fine except one thing: after I change the datagroup provider, I need to scroll down automatically. The problem is the images are not loaded immediately after I set the provider so (contentHeight - height) does not yet represent the actual maximum scrolling position. Is there an easy way of telling the datagroup to scroll down as its content loads? Because the workaround seems to be not so straightforward. This is the code for scrolling(thumbnailStrip is my datagroup):

I have a Spark List (spark.components.List) backed by an ArrayCollection for its dataProvider. The List has a vertical scrollbar when there's too many rows to display. What I want is when a new row is added to the List for it to scroll to the bottom to show that new row.
I've tried calling List's ensureIndexIsVisible from a listener on the ArrayCollection. This doesn't work because the List hasn't yet fully rendered the new row. It will either scroll to the second from the last row, or throw the exception:

I am treating a spark TextArea as text input(by setting heightInLines="1"). The TextArea is part of an mxml component and I want to resize the component when the text is changed.
I haven't been able to use textArea.measureaText(textArea.text) to get line metrics and use it. I get this error "Parameter antiAliasType must be non-null."
Is there any way to get the width of a TextArea which it is going to consume at runtime for a particular string or a particular TextFlow?

I have done lots of searching on this subject, but it seems what I am finding is either out of date or just does not seem to work.With TextFields in the past, you could set the TextField to a certain width, set wordWrap to true and you would end up with a textfield that changed height according to the text you added.Now I am trying to do this with either the Spark TextArea or RichText.I tried this HeightInLines = NAN, but that seems to be out of date.I also tried this routine:
var totalHeight:uint = 10;
this.validateNow();
var noOfLines:int = this.mx_internal::getTextField().numLines;[code]....
But the mx_internal is not in the Spark components.I am trying to do this with AS3, not MXML.

The Below code is running well...
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" >
[Code].....
Then htmlText doesn't support Spark Textarea. Hence produces error. How does one go about displaying HTML formatted text with spark Text Area Property.

I can't seem to get TextArea to render any embedded fonts in project. I've searched online and have found a couple of instances of this issue but no solutions.
I have a few fonts embedded with my app. Spark Label & the mx:TextArea (switching embedAsCFF to 'false') will display them correctly so I know they're embedded OK. I have the fontFamily value in a binding but I even tried just instantiating a new TextArea then assigning one the the embedded fonts via the fontFamily style and have had no luck.
/* In my CSS file */
@font-face {
src:url("assets/fonts/UbuntuMono/UbuntuMono-Regular.ttf");
fontFamily: UbuntuMono;

<s:TextArea id="editor">

<s:TextFlow id="_tf" >
<s:p>Lorem ipsum etc.</s:p>

But still no joy in inserting into the middle. Also, the above code wouldn't replace highlighted text, but that's not the real concern here.Based on Eugene's link the key to this is EditManager.The following code represents the working updated function:
protected function imageBtn_clickHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {
var em:EditManager = editor.textFlow.interactionManager as EditManager;
em.selectRange(editor.selectionAnchorPosition, editor.selectionActivePosition);

I am writing a flex application and I have two Spark TextAreas. I want to create an EventListener so that when the user clicks on a text area, the text inside the TextArea is cleared:
this.addEventListener(FocusEvent.FOCUS_IN, onFocusIn);
private function onFocusIn(ev:FocusEvent):void {
if (this._showsCaption) {
[Code]....
Currently I can implement this with a Spark TextInput, but when I click on the TextArea, the focusIn event never fires and the onFocusIn() handler is never called.

I am attempting to dynamically change the color of a subset/portion of text in a Spark TextArea control. Using the MX-based TextArea, I could leverage the mx.controls.textClasses.TextRange type and change the color directly as follows:
TextRange tr = new TextRange(theTextAreaControl, false, beginIndex, endIndex);
tr.color = somePredefindColor;
Input Parameters to TextRange constructor:
1st argument: The TextArea control that will provide access to the underlying textField property
2nd argument: Indicates the TextRange will not modify the content of the TextArea
3rd argument: The beginning index position in the TextArea text string
4th argument: The ending index position in the TextArea text string
How would I go about doing this for a Spark-based TextArea control? I am looking to dynamically change the font color for a range of text, not just the entire TextArea AND I cannot statically specify the font color. The problem I run into when trying to re-use the TextRange type is that the 1st argument is expected to provide the textField property, which is currently not on the Spark-based TextArea control. I thought about extending the Spark-based TextArea control to provide this accessor property but that seems like overkill and is probably not the best approach.

I have a TextArea that shows the conversation from selected chat room. For valueCommit event I use: verticalScrollPosition = maxVerticalScrollPosition; And it works fine scrolling text to the bottom. However in one case it doesn't work as expected. There's verylittle text, so TextArea has no scrollbar and then I put a lot of text and a scrollbar is necessary. The text is scrolled almost to the bottom (still a few lines need to be scrolled down). I am pretty sure it gets maxVerticalScrollPosition as if there was no scrollbar. So the question is how can I wait with updating verticalScrollPosition with respect to TextArea's new size (that is now with a scrollbar). I tried calling validateSize and other methods that start with 'validate' but unfortunately with no luck. I also tried the old trick of putting caret at the end of text. So the TextArea's scrollbar makes a difference when getting maxVerticalScrollPosition and I need to update verticalScrollPosition once all measurements are done. I forgot to mention. I use htmlText.

I have a TextArea that I don't ever want to be scrolled. When scrolling within the application that holds this TextArea, however, the scrolling stops as soon as the mouse ends up over the TextArea.
Is there any way to pass the scroll event to the application, or tell the TextArea to not claim the event?

I would like to disable copy event in the TextArea I'm using. To achieve so I added the following code block:
function initTA(){
var tf:IUITextField = body.mx_internal::getTextField();
tf.enabled = false;
}
<mx:TextArea id="body" creationComplete="initTA()" .../>
This is working fine unless the text area has lots of text inside in which case a scroll bar appears. After the scroll bar is being used by the user, the text area stopped blocking the copy event.
By the way, I am using text area for display purposes since I use rich text area format.

I'm currently learning Flex, and am having the hardest time getting scroll bars to work. In short, I'm making a giant form for users to fill out, contained within a viewstack component. The user will type up information in one view, and it will be displayed in the other. But right now in the first canvas I have components that run off the screen and flex doesn't automatically add a scroll bar, so I added 'verticalScrollPolicy="on"' to my canvas. Now, while it gives me a scroll bar, it gives me an empty scroll bar. I still cannot move it up or down, meaning components are still trapped off the bottom of my screen. Am I missing something simpleEdit - I'm using Adobe Flex Builder 3, and the components it lets you drag in. http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/218/problem1f.jpg This is a picture of the problem, and i guess relavent code would be.
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" width="830" height="835">
<mx:ViewStack x="10" y="72" id="viewstack1" width="790" height="751" >
<mx:Canvas label="Design Mode" width="100%" height="100%" verticalScrollPolicy="on"

I have 2 questions about flex datagrids: How can I scroll it automatically to the bottom when new portion of data arrived to it (e.g. I added new items). Strange, but seems it doesn't scroll when I use scrolling wheel, is there any trick about it (especially for mac Users).
public function scroll():void {
trace(chatboard.maxVerticalScrollPosition);
chatboard.verticalScrollPosition = chatboard.maxVerticalScrollPosition;
} <mx:TextArea id="chatboard" x="10" y="10" width="310" height="181" text="{chatMessages}" editable="false" verticalScrollPolicy="on" resize="scroll()"/>
But actually it don't work. The text area is not autoscrolled. Seems that 1) scroll is not called after new string is added to chatMessages.
