Flex :: 4 - Scroll Flex Spark Datagroup To Maximum Amount Programmatically
Jul 6, 2011
I have a spark skinnable component which contains a datagroup with images. The datagroup is scrolled by hovering the mouse over it. Everything works fine except one thing: after I change the datagroup provider, I need to scroll down automatically. The problem is the images are not loaded immediately after I set the provider so (contentHeight - height) does not yet represent the actual maximum scrolling position. Is there an easy way of telling the datagroup to scroll down as its content loads? Because the workaround seems to be not so straightforward. This is the code for scrolling(thumbnailStrip is my datagroup):

The old method for the mx:TextArea no longer works. Specifically:
myMxTextArea.verticalScrollPosition = myMxTextArea.maxVerticalScrollPosition;
I've found this method for Spark but seems a bit kludgy:
mySparkTA.scrollToRange(mySparkTA.text.length-1, mySparkTA.text.length);
Is there a more straightforward way to do this?

I have a component extending a Spark List, and when I scroll using the mouse wheel it scrolls too much in one go. I have tried looking for the handler that deals with mouse wheel scrolling in the List class and VerticalLayout class to override but I cannot find it.

do I have to necessarily have a application container as the root node in my mxml file?econd, I was reading this document on adobe's website and it says that the spark application container has no scroll bars by default and they can be added by using a custom skin. (Look at the table comparing the mx and spark application containers). But my problem is that my application container already has scroll bars by default and I want to get rid of them. I have a main application container with a custom child component that already has scroll bars. I just want the child to have the scroll bars and not the main application

I have a Spark List (spark.components.List) backed by an ArrayCollection for its dataProvider. The List has a vertical scrollbar when there's too many rows to display. What I want is when a new row is added to the List for it to scroll to the bottom to show that new row.
I've tried calling List's ensureIndexIsVisible from a listener on the ArrayCollection. This doesn't work because the List hasn't yet fully rendered the new row. It will either scroll to the second from the last row, or throw the exception:

Is there a way to get the columns to resize to the width of the new Datagrid instead of overflowing and showing the scrollbar? I've tried on the skin, setting all relevant properties and ran out of options. I just want it to behave like the previous Datagrid where the columns would resize to the width of the datagrid.

I have a spark datagrid on a mobile application, I set the
interactionMode="touch"
and the dataGrid scrolling is good, I got some problems adding a selectionChange eventListener to it, because scrolling the dataGrid will automatically change the selection and instead simply scrolling it, the function binded will start...
How can I add the touch dalay before select the index, so if I scroll the grid the selection won't change, and it change only if I press the item without scrolling?

I have DataGroup with TileLayout. How to make datagroup resize accordingly to number of elements in datagroup?For example 1 have 1 row with 4 elements. Each element is 20 pixels tall. So I want my datagroup to be 20 pixels tall as well. If I have 7 elements which will be 2 rows I want my datagroup to be 40 pixels tall and so on.Right now for datagroup with 1 row is about 100px tall.

I am currently working on a Photoshop-like transformer application to work with DisplayObjects as layers. I have an ArrayCollection which serves as my data provider for my List of values, but the problem is that the items are appearing in ascending order in the List:
0 - Item 1
1 - Item 2
2 - Item 3
3 - Item 4
Since it's a layer manager application, I need the items to appear in descending order like so:
3 - Item 4
2 - Item 3
1 - Item 2
0 - Item 1
This is because layer 0 is at the bottom of the stack, whereas layer 3 is at the top, rather than the other way around which is the way Flex is currently displaying things.
I know that I can simply apply a Sort to my ArrayCollection to cause the items to be sorted in reverse order, but this breaks functionality in my application. I was wondering if it would be possible to essentially modify my Spark List or DataGroup to have the layout render items backwards.

I've found a very annoying problem with the itemRenderers in a DataGroup in flex 4, when I mouseout of the itemRenderer is returns to its default state. Here's an example:
<s:Application
xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx">
[code]....
When the user clicks on the button the VGroup is collapsed as expected, but then if a user moves their mouse out of the item renderer it then collapses, i.e. returns to its default state.

I've been playing around with renderers the last few days for a mobile application. I'm creating a gridlike renderer that has columns that is light weight for a mobile app. It is a bit of a poor man's datagrid. The layout is fine. The question I have is controlling the height of each row in the list.
When measure() is called, I set the measuredHeight to:
measuredHeight = getElementPreferredHeight(ld) + verticalPadding;
Where vertical padding is:
var verticalPadding:Number = getStyle("paddingTop") + getStyle("paddingBottom");
When I debug on the desktop, the measuredHeight is set to 12 and on the device (Motorola Atrix), it is set to 12. But when layoutContents is called, the unscaledHeight is a number much larger than my measuredHeight value (44 on the device, 66 when running on the desktop), resulting in more vertical whitespace surrounding each item than I care to have. How do I control that row height? I happen to be using a Datagroup for this particular example but in some playing around I did with just a simple list, I had the same issue. Somewhere the system is overriding my measuredHeight with some other value.

I've been doing some rapid prototyping for a game I'm thinking of building. one of the main things i want to do is map generation for a tile type map. While generating the map i end up using large amounts of ram. I'm building the map as an array of random integers for my test. When i try to generate maps of a large scale flash gives me the out of memory error:
Error: Error #1000: The system is out of memory.
I've already figured i could write to a file instead, to solve that problem. but does anybody know the actual maximum size? I've tried searching around to no avail.Activity monitor reports that ADL is using around 500MB "real memory" and around 700MB "virtual memory". The System.privateMemory property seems to match the "real memory" value.as a side note i'm developing in OSX Snow Leopard (64) with 8gb ram
EDIT:
Here the example test i am running
var ba:ByteArray = new ByteArray();
for(var i:uint = 0; i<100000000; i++)
{
ba.writeInt(int(Math.random()*100));
[code]....
When i run this script from a browser, stand-alone debugger or AIR i get roughly the same memory usage readouts (which i know vary anyway). What is constant however is the final length of the byte array:
Browser (Firefox): TM: 540413952 FM: 19116032 PM: 562573312 BALENGTH: 13421778
Stand-alone: TM: 540577792 FM: 1810432 PM: 545361920 BALENGTH: 134217728
AIR (2.6): TM: 5410816 FM: 1159168 PM: 551464960 BALENGTH: 134217728
My testing methods might not be perfect, though i dont know how to do deeper profiling.

How do I differentiate between a data provider update and a itemrender being recycled when using a custom itemrenderer in a DataGroup?I have overridden the set data function of the custom item renderer, but I have found that on making a change to the ArrayCollection used as the DataProvider some of the item renderers are not assigned the same object they had before the update. This has made it almost impossible for me to distinguish between a data update and an itemrender being recycled. Also, the data never seems to get set to a value = null, so that seems to be out as well.

I'm using a dateField component (with editable = true) as an itemEditor in a dataGrid. Interestingly, when editing the textInput part of the dateField it doesn't seem to react to an ESC keydown as I would expect, i.e. reload old dateField value and give up focus. This seems to be standard for most other components, but not for as most other components do.
How would you go about implementing such behavior? I can listen to keydown == escape on the TextInput portion, but just realized that I don't know how to tell dateField to give up focus and politely close - in fact I'm not even sure that's the right strategy (maybe I should work at the DataGrid level?
