How do you force Combobox dropdowns to stay open even when other Alert boxes appear. Looking at what to subclass from mx.Combobox, there doesn't seem to be much that i can do to short of implementing an entire combobox from scratch.

When I change locales, the labels display correctly in the ComboBox's dropdown list, or if I change a selection. However, the currently selected item's label doesn't refresh at first. Is there a way to force the labelFunction to get called again?
I have a MenuBar which opens downwards except when there isn't enough room to open it. For example, it may have 10 items but there's only enough room to display 4-5. Flex then tries to display the menu above the bar, which is completely off the screen. Is there some property or style I'm overlooking to always force it to open downward?
EDIT: Thought I'd give some clarification as to how I plan to circumvent the issue. If I can always force the menubar to be orientated downwards, I can make it into a scrollable menubar displaying only a few items at worst.
I've made a site with small draggable "popup" windows (not actual windows since they are objects in flash..) I can drag em off the scene outside the edge. I've attempted many things.. A adaptation of the collision script found through search.. (on collision it stopped dragging) Worked nice, until you move the mouse real fast, then it can pass right through or partly through and the fact that it's stopdrag. It takes effort to get it from the edge. It's stuck basically.
I fixed it by making the on (press) change frame in a moveclip containing the border.. had a side effect though.. You can now drag the window out from the scene if you repetitively drag it towards the edge. Is there a way to limit a movieclips possible X & Y positions? (in both + & - range to make it a 4 cornered block). I also want the moveclip to keep moving up/down if if hits the right/left edge if you continue dragging it up/down (same with left/right edge also)

I changed the size of the "normal pic" and it works lovely.. but it's on enterFrame... and I need to react on on press and on release.. : tried to adapt it but cant figure out how.. and besides the script don't allow movement along the edges (like I described above) and if you move the mouse fast enough the window stops short of the edge..
When a combobox is elected in the flex app, there is a quick flicker, then the combobox needs to be selected again in order to get the dropdown to open. After that, the dropdown works as expected, but only while selecting the control subsequent times while on the form. Reloading the form requires the double selection again.
View 1 RepliesI have a Flex 4 app with an external ItemRenderer inside of a DataGroup for a repeating form. The DataGroup dataprovider is an ArrayCollection (coll_sites). In the documentParent I have a trio of comboBoxes (Status, Year, Area) that trigger a filter function that operates directly on coll_sites.The itemRenderer has a series of textInputs and comboBoxes. Three of these comboBoxes are tied to fields in coll_sites (again, Status, Year and Area) that are filtered by the aforementioned parentDocument comboBoxes.The problem I am having is that in the itemRenderer when the field is one of the filtered ones, the itemRenderer ComboBox will not close. If it's not filtered, there is no problem. I have confirmed that the problem ComboBox updates the ArrayCollection appropriately, it just won't close unless another Item in the dropdown is selected.[code]In the ItemRenderer code above, the ComboBox for STATUS works exactly as it should but YEAR stays open after changing. In my full code, I have three such filtered fields and all three behave exactly the same. The other six fields which are not filtered, close appropriately.
View 1 RepliesI'm working on a sort of AutoComplete component and faced one problem. When you create a new instance of a component, fill it with data - everything seems to be ok. When user types a letter in the inputField (and filter accepts one or few records) - everything goes alright, BUT if the first time user types a wrong letter (filter returned 0 records) - I'm getting a null-pointer exception.
This component is based on ComboBox. I have some thoughts about that: I suppose that the dropdown is not being created at time, any ideas on how to force my autoComplete to create it? I know 1 way - copy/paste some incapsulated code from ComboBox class .. but it would be too many of it .. I'm looking for a better solution.
Does anyone know how to force a combobox to drop up instead of down? by default, if your combobox is near the bottom of your movie stage it should do this...however...I'm calling a movie clip into another movie clip stage that is centered in full screen...therefore the "bottom" is too far away to make it do this. Hope this makes sense.

View 1 RepliesRecently today my Flash started not staying open. When I run it, it shows the normal screen with the timeline, properties, stage and all but then it closes down. I can still open my previous works except Flash just closes down.
Worked normally like 5 hours ago. Although something strange did happen when I was using it 5 hours ago. My library suddenly became empty of all tweens and symbols and stuff but my program still worked. Restarting Flash brought back all the symbols to the library. But I doubt that this could be the cause of my newer more serious problem.

and I would like the link to open the new page in the same tab. In Safari it opens the link in a new window (when the default is to open links in the same tab). In IE it opens in a new tab, and also in Firefox (though in Firefox this is the default behaviour for me). Is there a way to override default settings and get the link to open in the same tab for all browsers?

We have an Air and Flash application that opens a pdf, but many computers by default open pdfs in browser plugins rather than through reader itself. Is there a way to force the alternate behavior in Flash/Air? This is needed since we have slightly writable pdfs.

Does anyone know a way to force a popup window to open in flash? something like you would do on an HTML link <a target="_blank"> or something of the sort.

I have a problem to determinate if my combobox is open or not. I've seen the same topic but that solution : if(combobox.dropdown != null && combobx.dropdown.visible) doesn't work for me. It is always true. I can't find any component who is responsible for this such a simple operation.
View 1 RepliesI'm trying to set a specific list item in a mx combobox to have a custom item renderer, the problem is that I cannot do this via mxml, it needs to be done via actionscript at a later stage, eg: combobox gets created, combobox gets populated, user does other tasks, combobox needs to set one or more items in the combobox to have icons (via item renderer)..
I can do this via the onChange event, but it only applies the icon when the combobox is opened and there is a slight delay so you can see the icon being added.
How can I validate there's a selected item in a ComboBox before saving? If there's no selected item, how can I set focus on the ComboBox?
View 2 RepliesI have an swf with a comboBox with three simple values. When I bring up the swf by itself it works fine. When I try to bring up the swf by loading it from another swf, I get a TypeError: Error 1009 "Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference, when I try to open its dropdown. If I add a ComboBox to the parent SWF's library the error goes away and everything works fine. Although I have a fix, I have several child swf's that I don't always know what components are in them.
View 2 RepliesI am creating a navigation bar in Flash (which will then be used in Dreamweaver). When you mouse over each topic in menu (ex. Products), i want it play a movie clip (so it shoots out a sub-menu underneath). so far so good, but the only thing is, the sub-menu won't stay open in order for me to click on buttons in it. For each button, I assigned it the Behavior to go to a url. Also, I tested the buttons within the mc and they don't seem to direct me to url. do you think maybe it's because it's nested within the movie clip?? Is there an easier way to go about this?

I want to create a form (flash or java/ajax) that allows selection data to be pulled from an xml file.
Example:
A ring builder application - the user selects the ring setting in one dropdown and then they select a diamond in another drop down. But the prices of the diamonds changes every day based upon the market, so we would need to easily update that data - hence an xml or excel file.
It would be even better if the data could be linked - such as selecting a princess cut diamond, then the settings that are only compatible with princess cut show up, and then after selecting a setting, only diamonds that are the right size for the setting show.
I have been working on building a XML menu and I have been able to create the top level menu but I am not sure how to add the sub menu items in a drop down. I have a link to a zip file containing my XML and FLA file. I am using CS4. [URL]. The top level menu items consist of the following and the sub menu options are listed. In this list, Items 1,2 and 3 are top level menu buttons and item 4 is a sub menu button that would drop down from item 3.

View 1 RepliesI have an app w/ a login screen. When the user hits "enter", the state changes to "login" & a child component is triggered to load (though the child stays invisible at the moment). The child contains many functions that the user needs upon logging in (ie their screenname & settings are retrieved from a database). The following is included in 'Parent':

My problem is when a user logs out (state changes to 'Default') & then logs back in (state changes back to 'login') the child doesn't get "triggered" again & the functions w/in the child don't reload. Is there a way to force my child to refresh?
Note: While it would be easier to just move the child's functions to the parent it is complex...I moved these functions to the child to make it easier to follow
UPDATE: I even tried adding an "exitState" to my state:
<s:State name="login" exitState="removeElement(localComp)" />
This doesn't work either, as I get an error: "RangeError: Index 0 is out of range."
UPDATE: Even though you are allowed to call a child's function from a parent, my problem is that the child needs to be "created" in order to not show errors. It makes no sense to me why the flex team would make something like removing & adding children so complicated.
I'm using an iFrame in a Flex 3 project. The problem is that if the user opens my site in a small browser window, they don't get scrollbars. How can I solve this problem? Is there a way to force the browser to put up scrollbars?
If I set the main app to horizontalScrollPolicy="on" verticalScrollPolicy="on" or to "auto", then as you scroll down, the iFrame is stuck to the top of the browser window and obscures the content.
