ActionScript 2.0 :: Depth Setting - Movieclips Are Being Duplicated Constantly?

i have a movie clip on the stage, and i need its depth to always be higher than everything, but other movieclips are being duplicated constantly. How do i do this?

Im writing an application that parses xml to display a menu system in Flash. The same loop that grabs the xml creates a new movie clip for each node(menuitem). I need to set a delay between the duplicated movie clips so they appear one after another rather than all at the same time. Ive tried a few different things (interval and timer) but havent got it to work.

I'm working on a new site and one of the things the client likes most is the idea of these gears that are constantly rotating on the screen. However, now that I have the mock-up design done, I'm noticing that the constant rotation requires a lot of CPU to maintain. Has anyone else experienced this and have you figured out a better method than the one I am using to rotate the movieclips?

i have it when you land on the "ground" a dust cloud spawns, and goes away. Now i got that part under control, sometimes the "player" MC glitches and moves ever so slightly up and down unnoticeablly if it was for the dust cloud, Now my question, how would i go about setting an interval for the duplicated moveclip?

ive got a radiobutton component on my stage named radio1. I need to duplicate it and then change a few properties, but i cant seem to get the path/naming right. This is my code:

I have tried repeatedly to take the examples in setChildIndex and instead of using sprites I want to control the order of 2 buttons on the stage so that when I roll over one of the buttons it comes to the top.

I get how to set depth in as3 - but with as2 i could begin multiple 'depth points' using numbers - where in as3 all i can seem to do is set this object to a higher/lower depth than that object. The problem is (when dealing with a stack of isometric boxes, which can be placed by the user on a grid in any order) i don't want to deal with the added complexity of having every element know where every other element is, then adjust appropriately.
What I'm trying to do is set up 6 total depth numbers/positions, one for each column in a 6 x 6 grid. So anything in column 1 will begin it's depth placement at say 500, anything in column 2 will begin its depth at 1000, column 3 would be 1500 and so on.
That way, the second i place an object on a particular column, it would tuck itself under, or place itself above all surrounding items in other columns, this to me is much much easier than somehow figuring out where 15 different sized boxes are, how they relate to one another, then figure out what depth order they need to go in. as3 seems to have removed the ability to set a depth to a specific number.

But, where I have to set depth and the instance name, when I trace the mc.name. It shows as "instance1". I need to set depth and to name the mc.

I am placing several AS3 buttons (actual buttons not event-laden MCs)on a Flash stage and want my enlarged rollover images to always come to the front of all other dormant buttons.My script-fu is weak,but piecing together the advice from several helpful posts I have generally learned how to set the childindex on a rollover event to be high enough to go to the fore.I plugged in the appropriate language in my action frame and was psyched to see that the coding worked...but only briefly.After just a few clicks (it seems that whenever a button is hit for the second time), not only did the childindex trick stop working, but the buttons (which act to send the user to labeled frames later in the time-line) stopped working altogether.It seems that the issue is definitely related to the setting of the childindex, because when I remove those event listeners/commands,the buttons all work fine for an infinite number of clicks (but the enlarged rollover images are stacked in one static sequence, blocking each other out).Is there something inherently incorrect about this approach?Something simple that I am overlooking? Some way to reset the process on each click so it does not get gummed up (I tried re-setting childindex #s to 0 on rollout or on click, but it did not help)?
I have had it suggested that rearranging the order is destroying ability to recognize mouse events...but not sure if this is correct, what it would mean.The code that I am using for each button (for setting the depth and for redirecting on click) is below,

I'm getting frustrated with a project I'm working on. The problem I'm having now is trying to make a breadcrumbing list that is masked within an area like below.
Each breadcrumb is a duplicated movieclip that adds new text and resizes to fit the text as needed then moved over so that it is spaced evenly. All is well until the next duplicate which is beyond the mask area. When a duplicate is found to be beyond the right edge of the mask area, everything moves to the left so that the new duplicate will fit in its entirety. The whole thing blows up and releases all of the previous movieclips from the mask layer like below. I am using CS3 Actionscript 3 Publishing to Player 9.

I have set up a Qwerty keyboard within a swf using duplicateMovieClip() - all works fine. If I have no tabbing whatsoever then I can use the tab key to randomly jump all over the keyboard.
But I would like it to tab in an order. Other buttons at the _root level are tabbing fine but these dynamically created ones are not doing a thing.
The keyboard buttons are created within a movieclip called mcContent which is sat at the _root level, anything within this mc is usually referenced by mcContent. or _level0.mcContent. (if it is being really fussy).
I have an instructions button - if this is NOT included in the tabIndex then the tabbing will work on the keyboard, erratically, but it at least goes there. As soon as I set _root.mcInstructionsBtn.tabIndex = 1; then nothing but the _root level buttons work
I have tried to add the tabIndex when creating the movieclips but this has not worked either. I have tried to set the tabIndex in a copy version where the keyboard buttons are created at the _root level and it functions exactly the same.

Is there (or what is the) best method to address duplicated movieclips? For example if you duplicate a number of movieclips (or attach or anything else) through a for loop and give them names like mc1, mc2, etc, how can you address them outside the loop? Especially if the number of times you duplicate the clips is read from a file which can change constantly. Example - an image gallery where you just add the files to your xml and they show up in the gallery.

I am trying to do a bit of code that duplicates a movieclip with an input text box inside it, which the user can then position wherever they want on the stage.
Now, I've been monkeying about with this bit of code (on the frame);

This works fine for duplicating and positioning the movieclips, but when I try and input text into the duplicated movieclip's input text box, it won't have any of it. I have tried everything I can think of, from trying to isolate the drag, to getting the input text box to position itself dynamically (kinda like a startdrag) but I can't get anything to work!

I'm running a loop that's creating a multiple movieclips. Each clip can be dragged to drop point on the screen. What i'm trying to accomplish is when you select an item to drag it should take the highest depth, and should appear over all other draggable items. Right now the first clip is always under all of them while the last is getting the highest.

It seems like the random variables in my duplicated movieclips are all the same, any way to change this? To explain a bit more in detail: I got a movieclip with a few random variables and actions and I duplicate this movieclip and want the duplicate to have different random variables than the first one, but it gets identical ones.

How do you go about swapping depths in AS3? I've got a movieClip (allContent_mc) that contains a bunch of other movieClips(mc1, mc2, etc.) that expand in size when clicked on. However, when they are expanded I need to make sure that the one being viewed is on top. The control to expand each clip lives within each clip itself. Ideally, when the expand code (below) is executed, I'd like to make sure the clip's depth supersedes all others. I'm keeping all the clips together in one larger clip because the larger clip is living inside a scrollPane component. Pretty sure I'm just not defining the path to the clip correctly.

I'm working on a piece for work. I need to figure out how to add unique dynamic text fields to duplicated movieclips. Unique as in unique instance names and variable names. I have a movieclip on the stage that contains a dynamic text field.
the text field will house text that is being pulled from an xml file.What I need is to have the dynamic text field in all the duplicated movieclips have a unique instance name and variable name.I assume that a nested for loop would be required, but I'm not sure as I am not the greatest actionscripter. I asked this question yesterday but I found out that my problem is using fullscreen my goal is 2 mc 2 buttons : if btn 1 is clicked mc1 fullscreen and mc2 appears at the right bottom corner on top of mc1 if btn 2 is clicked mc2 fullscreen and mc1 appears at the right bottom corner on top of mc2 stage.swapChildren or setChildIndex is the way but with the fullScreen I had this error appears

I have two movie clips. The child movieclip is a button with rollover events which is nested inside the parent. I would like the parent to also have rollover events, but I understand that this is not possible in flash. I am familiar with two workarounds: event bubbling/delegation and the event listeners.

im having some trouble when trying to implement the swap depth function to movieclips that have the setmask function implimented to them. the problem is that i can get the swapdepth to work but when the setmask is implimented at the same time the movie clips will not swap depths.
the code that i am using to set the mask is _root.bgmasked.setMask(_root.dragger); this is on frame one in the action/code layer bgmasked is the imaged being masked by dragger.

I am working on a game engine that works like an overhead RPG, but the terrain is drawn at an angle with the characters at the same angle to give the illusion of a 3D world. the problem I am running into is that, while I can get the character to move perfectly fine on the ground, I need to be able to set the character to go behind or above certain objects depending where he is.
The best example of what I am trying to accomplish is from Gaia's MMO.

As you can see in the first frame of the image, the character is in front of the bush, but behind the lamppost. In the second frame he is both behind the lamppost and bush. In the last frame, he is in front of both the lamppost and bush. during all of this though the bush and Lamppost never change position with the terrain or each other.
Basically, I have come to the conclusion that I believe the way this RPG is able to do this is through distance detection and depth swaps.
ex. if distance is above 0 character is above object. if distance is below 0, character is below object.
The main I would like to accomplish with this is the character, enemies, and NPC's are the only thing that changes depth. why? If an enemy is following and is on a different depth then the character, possibly higher or lower then the object, it could appear above or below the object while the character is the opposite.
