I am curious in what strategies people are using (if they are using) the Key events inside of their classes. I am trying to build up a character class and I wanted to encapsulate the movement inside of the class.

I have done this same thing in ActionScript 3, but am not familiar with ActionScript 2, which I am forced to use for this project. I am loading products into a SWF via XML and attempting to add a click event to each dynamically-created movieclip. Simply tracing the text from a node in XML will do for now. I'd like to assign a property called "desc" or "description" to each movieclip and have it trace that property's value when clicked. Here is the relevant portion of my code as it stands:

ActionScript Code:
var iXML:XML = new XML();

ActionScript 3.0 :: Events Dispatched By The Class A Doesn't Get Listened By The Main Class?

Feb 2, 2010

I have a main class which listens for an event dispatched from another class say class A. Also there are other classes say class B, class C etc.There is a controller class.Classes B, C dispatches events that gets listened by the controller and works well.But the events dispatched by the Class A doesn't get listened by the main class.What might be the problem. Detailed Explanation of the problem.There is a main mxml file.

Class files are in:
ProcessInput.as
DBController.as
ShortMemDB.as ....etc

The main mxml file gets the input from a textArea. Sends the input to the capturedInput (input:String) function using set method which is in the ProcessInput Class.Now I need to dispatch events NORMAL, COMMAND depending on the input obtained after the processing, where I'm having problems. The reason is that if the event NORMAL is dispatched a particular function inside the DBController is to be called. If COMMAND event is dispatched then I need to call another function. This idea doesn't work since the events doesn't get listened.But the events dispatched by the CSDB class when listened by the DBController works well.

Actionscript 3 :: Dispatching Events From Parent Class To Child Class

Apr 30, 2010

I think this is a pretty simply problem but I do not seem to be able to pull it off. Basically I have a parent class A, and a child class B.Class A instantiates class B with addChild.There is a shared object which is being updated from a java server (red5) that has an event listener attached to it in class A.I have a function in class A which will pass certain, specific updates from this shared object to class B.The problem occurs is that when class B is instantiated, the event listener from class A doesn't work anymore. I have not removed the event listener from A.?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Way To Listen For Events Sent From Main.swf Inside Preloader.swf?

Sep 16, 2009

I'm trying to listen for events sent from my main movie swf from inside a preloader shell swf.Inside Preloader.swf, I load my Main.swf in the traditional way, with a loader object and I listen for progress events on that. These progress events make my preloader bar scaleX increase, like normal. But, I have an XML file and an image that load inside of my Main.swf as soon as it is loaded. I would like for these unloaded bytes to be shown in my Preloader.swf before the Main.swf gets added to the stage.right now, I am sending the totalBytes from the XML file and the image to my Main.swf document class, which, in turn, dispatches a custom "PreloaderEvent" that holds the total number of bytes.

In Preloader.swf, I add an event listener to the loader ( which holds main.swf ), listening for that PreloaderEvent.Can events be heard in this manner and is this the best way to be preloading this type of file ( one where main.swf loads in the first frame, then starts loading of external images after the swf is running ).I'm just not sure how to get all of those extraneous bytes into one location for my preloader to see at the same time.

Actionscript 3 :: Events - Procedure To Use The Result From A Textbox Inside A Popup?

Jul 28, 2011

I have made a class that Pops-up a window that contains a panel with a textbox and two buttons, one for accepting, other for cancelling. It should work as a prompt in which you enter some text, and then if you like the changes, you accept, else, you cancel and the text you entered is discarded.

The thing I'm not sure how to handle is how to receive the text, once the user presses 'Accept', from the class I want to receive it from.

So, the approach I took is a bit cumbersome: firstly, when launching the popup, I associate with it a function (called onResult() in the code) from the 'class that launches', which will be called after the user presses the 'Accept' or 'Cancel' buttons; secondly, to get the text that the user inserted in the box, I keep a reference to it public from my class.

have a look at the code here: [URL]

I've also programmed in Android before, and the approach there would be much cleanier, just putting the text result from the popup inside a bundle inside an intent, and receiving it from the launched class. Here, I have to pass functions and such, which I don't like at all (although it works!).

ActionScript 3.0 :: Detecting Mouse Events On Classes With Different Content Inside

Sep 2, 2009

I have a Card class. From this class, I have three possible children: Photo, Video and Info. In my main class, I want to create a few instances of these different classes without knowing what kind it is. But, no matter that, I want them all to listen to the mouse, so I may have something like this:

ActionScript Code:
var item:Card = new Photo();
item.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, mouseHandler);

The thing is: the Card class is kinda like a canvas... it has certain properties common to every type of item, but there's a space where it leaves it as a canvas... a Photo instance will load a photo there, a Video instance will load a video and a Info instance will load text to a TextField. The problem is that the event listener doesn't work the way I want it to... on an Info instance, the target of the click is the TextField; on a Photo instance is the picture... I want them all to be the class itself... in other words, I want to be able to parse the target as a child of the Card class. My code for the mouseHandler method is

ActionScript Code:
private function mouseHandler(e:MouseEvent):void
{
if(e.target is Photo)

[Code].....

That's the main idea... to be able to know what kind of object I'm clicking and access its properties... but on an Info instance, e.target is of type TextField... to be able to access the Info object, I have to do e.target.parent, and that is NOT the idea.

Javascript :: Detect When Key And Mouse Events Occur Inside Of A Flash Application?

Mar 5, 2012

I've some very old Flash applications, which we don't want to rebuild to add a new feature. We simply need to detect when the user has become idle. So, if the Flash application receives no key or mouse events after 3 minutes, we want to track that time till the user interacts with the application again.

We've considered wrapping the applications in newer Flash applications to include the key/mouse event tracking; however, early research shows that some of our apps are so old that they use event systems or AVM's (ActionScript Virtual Machines) that are incompatible. Also, it seems that mouse events on the inner application don't bubble up to the outer application. (I think the direction of event processing is backwards in versions of Flash prior to 8)

Anyhow, the next idea on the table is to see if we can determine when the user stops interacting with the old Flash applications using JavaScript. Can anyone confirm whether or not it is possible to detect, using JavaScript only, when a swf in an HTML document loses focus or key and mouse events stop and start occurring on the swf?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Calling A Function From An Extended Class Inside A Top Level Class

Sep 23, 2009

package{
public class Character{
protected var _hp:uint = 50; //Character Health Points
protected var _power:uint = 5; //Damage dealt

[Code].....

I`m instancing a Character and a Player in the Main Timeline, all in frame 1.
When I use: ""player.attack(character)"" it works fine by itself.

So I added the if (defender._hp <= 0) this.win() which gives me the following error:

1061: Call to a possibly undefined method win through a reference with static type Character.

"defender" is a Character instance, "this" is a Player instance and "win()" is a Player method. I try to call the Player method inside a Character method using the Player instance adding the "." and his method name

Do I really need to define the win() function in the Character class? Is there a bypass to use a subclass method in a parent class method if it`s called from an instance of the subclass?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Referencing A Textfield Inside A Movieclip Class From Document Class

Feb 3, 2009

Ok, this is one of those walls that I know once I can jump over it, I will be a much happier developer again.

I've done tons of reading, and think I have a firm understanding that the general consensus is that if you want to reference something, it needs to be added to the display list, using addChild().

I hate to be defiant, but what if I don't want to?

Or at the very least, what if I want to add a movieclip class to the stage using addChild, and then reference objects inside it?

It is much easier this way than what most people recommend - adding 15 objects via addChild, then setting the x and y for the, etc.

That said, I'm all about using classes and using as3 the way it was meant to be used. So what this is, is a best practices question I guess.

HERE ARE THE STEPS I'M TRYING:

- Create new flash document

- Draw graphic symbol bg, with text field over it, select them, convert to movieclip symbol, and export class name "box", then delete it from stage

- Add document class .as file, which simply adds that class "box" from the library, to the display list using a simple addChild()

- Set a name for that box using box.name = "test" let's say

- Do a simple trace like the following - "getChildByName('test').textFieldName" - it shows up great

- So then, I'll now try to set the text by doing this - getChildByName('test').textFieldName.text = "yo";

That last line above, is what doesn't work. I know I'm referencing wrong, but how would a pro as3 developer, reference something on the stage within a movieclip class, from the document class?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Dynamically Create Class Inside A Class?

I create an instance of Class0 on stage like : var myClip0:Class0 = new Class0(this, "Class1");

The class Class0 when initializing, will create a new movieclip (myClip1) and add it as child, as an instance of Class1, like myClip0.myClip1. But it's when i create that clip, i want to tell it, it's an instance of Class1, like :

private var myClip1:Class1 = new Class1(this);

Where Class1 could be any class.

How do i pass Class1 to Class0 so it can create it dynamically?? Do i have to use the apply function??

inside Class0, i have a function that does :

Code:
if(subClass){
initSubclass(subClass);
}

Flex :: Activate An Application So The User Doesn't Have To Click Inside It To Start Getting Keyboard Events

Nov 26, 2010

My Flex application is heavily keyboard-oriented. It uses 100% of the browser window and I'd like the user to be able to start using it immediately - as soon as it loads. However, it seems that the application is only first "activated" (i.e. the activate event fires) when the mouse clicks somewhere inside it, which is very inconvenient for my keyboard-heavy app.

Can I force an activation of my app at some point during/after it loads? I hope I don't have to display some silly "click inside to activate" overlay every time the page loads..

In certain browsers ([cough] Chrome [/cough]) the focus is lost whenever the user switches away from the browser (or even touches the address bar) and is not regained when switching back. So the solution has to take in consideration not just the first focus when the page loads but also "re-focusing".

ActionScript 3.0 :: Events Into A Class?

My FLA has a class instantiated in it and I can call the public functions in that class no problem. What does not seem to work, is to dispatch an event in the FLA and the class to register it. Is that how it is? Seems that from inside the class outward is no problem. So, from child to parent, works, but not the other way around. The event that I am dispatching on the FLA timeline looks like this:

dispatchEvent(new Event("SHOW_TIP"));

For instance, I want to be able to create an instance of my class somewhere else, load a sound and attach an event listener to my custom class that listens for the event thrown by the sound. Understandably, I don't want to make the sound object a public variable.
