Javascript :: Detect When Key And Mouse Events Occur Inside Of A Flash Application?

Mar 5, 2012

I've some very old Flash applications, which we don't want to rebuild to add a new feature. We simply need to detect when the user has become idle. So, if the Flash application receives no key or mouse events after 3 minutes, we want to track that time till the user interacts with the application again.

We've considered wrapping the applications in newer Flash applications to include the key/mouse event tracking; however, early research shows that some of our apps are so old that they use event systems or AVM's (ActionScript Virtual Machines) that are incompatible. Also, it seems that mouse events on the inner application don't bubble up to the outer application. (I think the direction of event processing is backwards in versions of Flash prior to 8)

Anyhow, the next idea on the table is to see if we can determine when the user stops interacting with the old Flash applications using JavaScript. Can anyone confirm whether or not it is possible to detect, using JavaScript only, when a swf in an HTML document loses focus or key and mouse events stop and start occurring on the swf?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Detect Mouse Events Outside Childs Scope?

Jun 19, 2010

i was wondering how to make a class that is capable of detecting mouse events outside its own stage.

e.g. i want to make a click-drag bar and if i click on the drag button and start to drag, but the mouse exits the drag bar area, it wont pick up mouse_up and wont finish dragging.

i know i could add a listener to global stage and check if the user is dragging, if so, i could stop the drag. But...what i want to do is a class that wouldnt require me any coding withing a parent class.

Actionscript 3 :: Possible To Lock Mouse Inside FULLSCREEN Flash Application

Nov 16, 2011

I've done some research and determined that it isn't currently possible to lock the mouse into a flash application/game. People keep suggesting using fullscreen mode, which is great for a single monitor solution. However, I am developing applications that use 2 or more monitors, and require the mouse to be restricted to certain ones. Is it possible, when running flash in full screen mode, to restrict the mouse to staying inside the full screen app, so that it can't move to and click on other monitors?I am using AS3.I am also running these flash applications in Adobe AIR, if that makes any difference.

Flex :: Activate An Application So The User Doesn't Have To Click Inside It To Start Getting Keyboard Events

Nov 26, 2010

My Flex application is heavily keyboard-oriented. It uses 100% of the browser window and I'd like the user to be able to start using it immediately - as soon as it loads. However, it seems that the application is only first "activated" (i.e. the activate event fires) when the mouse clicks somewhere inside it, which is very inconvenient for my keyboard-heavy app.

Can I force an activation of my app at some point during/after it loads? I hope I don't have to display some silly "click inside to activate" overlay every time the page loads..

In certain browsers ([cough] Chrome [/cough]) the focus is lost whenever the user switches away from the browser (or even touches the address bar) and is not regained when switching back. So the solution has to take in consideration not just the first focus when the page loads but also "re-focusing".

ActionScript 3.0 :: Detecting Mouse Events On Classes With Different Content Inside

Sep 2, 2009

I have a Card class. From this class, I have three possible children: Photo, Video and Info. In my main class, I want to create a few instances of these different classes without knowing what kind it is. But, no matter that, I want them all to listen to the mouse, so I may have something like this:

ActionScript Code:
var item:Card = new Photo();
item.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, mouseHandler);

The thing is: the Card class is kinda like a canvas... it has certain properties common to every type of item, but there's a space where it leaves it as a canvas... a Photo instance will load a photo there, a Video instance will load a video and a Info instance will load text to a TextField. The problem is that the event listener doesn't work the way I want it to... on an Info instance, the target of the click is the TextField; on a Photo instance is the picture... I want them all to be the class itself... in other words, I want to be able to parse the target as a child of the Card class. My code for the mouseHandler method is

ActionScript Code:
private function mouseHandler(e:MouseEvent):void
{
if(e.target is Photo)

[Code].....

That's the main idea... to be able to know what kind of object I'm clicking and access its properties... but on an Info instance, e.target is of type TextField... to be able to access the Info object, I have to do e.target.parent, and that is NOT the idea.

Javascript 3 :: Can A JavaScript Function Detect Which Flash DOM Object Called It

May 20, 2011

Here's the challenge: I have a Flash movie which will be embedded in a page using an unknown DOM ID that I want to be able to identify/store for callback in a JS function. My ideal user flow would be: User clicks button in Flash. Flash pauses any animations / video / sounds / etc. Flash calls an injected JS function to display a page-covering overlay experience. When user closes overlay experience, a callback method on the Flash object is called. Flash resumes playback.

The problem is, when AS3 uses the ExternalInterface.call("functionName", args...) method, there doesn't seem to be a DOM event triggered, and thus it is impossible to tell which object called a JS function, so having a "registerMe()" function doesn't seem to work. Basically, the injected JS function has no way to determine which DOM object to call, because the ID of the Flash object is unknown.

IDE :: Buttons - Navigation Action Doesn't Occur Until Release The Mouse Button

Feb 3, 2011

I have three buttons on screen that navigate to different places on the timeline. I have set them all up as buttons using a generic button in the library and then given them all different instance names. I selected the button and changed the text colour for each state in the timeline (up, over, down) to keep it simple. The buttons are all, as far as I can analyse, identical in all but instance name.

When I test the movie, the first button changes text colour on 'over' and, when I click (i.e. down state) the colour changes again as designed. The navigation action doesn't occur until I release the mouse button, giving the feel of having 'clicked' the button.

With the other two buttons, which have been set up as far as I can tell in exactly the same way, when the down state occurs, I see a momentary flash of the text colour change and it performs the nav straight away. I really want it to perform the same way as the first button but cannot for the life of me see why they're behaving differently.

What Flash Events Can Interrupt Mouseup And How To Detect These

Dec 6, 2010

The simplified code:
//triggered on MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN
private function beginDrag(e:MouseEvent):void {
stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVE, drag);
stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, endDrag);
stage.addEventListener(Event.DEACTIVATE, endDrag);
[Code] .....

I am using some click-and-drag techniques within my flash code, and I've noticed some loopholes with the MOUSE_UP event:
-It wont be triggered if a context menu is activated while the mouse is still held down.
-It wont be triggered if the window is deactivated (alt+tab or similar)
What other events can possibly interrupt the MOUSE_UP event and lead to unexpected behavior? Additionally is there a way to generically catch ContextMenuEvent.MENU_SELECT for all context menus without having to manually add/remove the listeners to each context menu?

Video embed code:
// Initialize net stream
nc = new NetConnection();
nc.connect (null); // Not using a media server.

Javascript :: Engage Events In JS And React To The Events ?

Dec 26, 2011

I am designing a music player using JavaScript (jQuery) and HTML5, with Flash AS3 to fall back. Basically what I want to do is to be able to click HTML control elements and have them interact with the flash in order to play/pause and skip tracks in the playlist (playlist JSON file read by JavaScript, passes file ID to AS3, AS3 reads another JSON file to get URL, then plays audio)

This enables me to only use the Flash to play the audio, thus creating the same user experience regardless of HTML5 browser support. I'm assuming I will have to 'listen' for events in AS3, however any pointers in how to engage these events in JS and react to the events in AS3

ActionScript 3.0 :: Mixing Stage Mouse Events And Children Events?

Sep 30, 2009

I have an animation that I want to start when clicking on the flash window. However, I've also have some buttons on the stage. If I add an event listener for MouseEvent.CLICK on the stage, then it 'eats up' the events and the buttons don't work.

I've tried some tricks, by adding some invisible buttons on top of the real ones, and use the MOUSE_OVER event to selectively enable/disable the mouseEnabled flag for the stage, but didn't work because it complains that the property or method doesn't exist (which I find odd).

Javascript :: Detect If An Embedded Swf Is Created With Flex Or Flash?

Apr 15, 2011

Is there a way (in javascript) to detect if an embedded .swf was created with Flash Professional or Flex.We have a page with several tabs, each of which can contain an .swf.All tabs are defined within the same HTML file and the javascript framework calls a .rewind() and .play() on the swf when the containing tab becomes active.This works great on regular flash animation, making sure they start playing from the beginning when the tab is opened. On an swf created with Flex however, the rewind and play wreak havoc on the Flex framework and the application doesn't load.

The best way we've come up with to detect Flex is to count the number of frames the .swf has. With flex that's always 2. But this doesn't sound like the best way.We've also tried to add a callback method with ExternalInterface on the Flex application preinitialize event.Unfortunately this event is called quite late in the application startup and the javasctipt code checks the callback before the Flex code has added it.

Javascript :: Detect If Mobile Browser Can Install Flash?

Some known mobile browsers that can't install Flash are:

iOS Safari
Android Chrome beta
Android Firefox

Instead of building an ever-changing list of Flash installability, I would like to detect this in a general way in Javascript.
