ActionScript 2.0 :: Button Events In A Class?
May 31, 2010
I have one fla file which has a button(Sign in) and some movieclips(User name and password) in it. I have attached an actionscript(login.as) to this fla which contains a class definition (login class) and i want to get the instance on the button (sing in button) and add the onclick and same sort of events to this button.

I have a main class which listens for an event dispatched from another class say class A. Also there are other classes say class B, class C etc.There is a controller class.Classes B, C dispatches events that gets listened by the controller and works well.But the events dispatched by the Class A doesn't get listened by the main class.What might be the problem. Detailed Explanation of the problem.There is a main mxml file.
Class files are in:
ProcessInput.as
DBController.as
ShortMemDB.as ....etc
The main mxml file gets the input from a textArea. Sends the input to the capturedInput (input:String) function using set method which is in the ProcessInput Class.Now I need to dispatch events NORMAL, COMMAND depending on the input obtained after the processing, where I'm having problems. The reason is that if the event NORMAL is dispatched a particular function inside the DBController is to be called. If COMMAND event is dispatched then I need to call another function. This idea doesn't work since the events doesn't get listened.But the events dispatched by the CSDB class when listened by the DBController works well.

I think this is a pretty simply problem but I do not seem to be able to pull it off. Basically I have a parent class A, and a child class B.Class A instantiates class B with addChild.There is a shared object which is being updated from a java server (red5) that has an event listener attached to it in class A.I have a function in class A which will pass certain, specific updates from this shared object to class B.The problem occurs is that when class B is instantiated, the event listener from class A doesn't work anymore. I have not removed the event listener from A.?

My FLA has a class instantiated in it and I can call the public functions in that class no problem. What does not seem to work, is to dispatch an event in the FLA and the class to register it. Is that how it is? Seems that from inside the class outward is no problem. So, from child to parent, works, but not the other way around. The event that I am dispatching on the FLA timeline looks like this:
dispatchEvent(new Event("SHOW_TIP"));

So I've created a custom class which makes use of a Sound object. The Sound object loads a sound from a URL, and I attach and event listener to it to see it when it finishes loading i.e. Event.Complete
MY question is this: how do I receive this event outside of the class? For instance, I want to be able to create an instance of my class somewhere else, load a sound and attach an event listener to my custom class that listens for the event thrown by the sound. Understandably, I don't want to make the sound object a public variable.

package com.services
{
import com.asfusion.mate.events.ResponseEvent;
import com.events.navigation.DesgManagementEvent
import flash.events.EventDispatcher;
import mx.controls.Alert;
[Code]...
I am able to get the result, but not able to dispatch the event from the custom actionScript class. I googled and got the riposte that you need to add it to display list.

I sometimes see events declared near the top of the class (i.e. below the imports but above the constructor):
/**
* Description here
*
**/
[Event(name="complete", type="flash.events.Event")]
What exactly is this? Is this an "import" of a certain type of event?

I have a model which manages all of my data (DataManager)
I have a series of view classes, which manage stage instances.
I would like my view classes to listen for custom events within my DataManager class. So, for example, when all of my data files are loaded, I would like to have a custom event dispatch. All of my views will have listeners within them, waiting for events from the DataManager to trigger functions within.[code]...

I have the Main class that imports my urlValidator class.My urlValidator class imports com.usual.swfaddress and thanks to the SWFAdressEvent fires the function dealing with the validation of the url.In some other class myMenu (child of the Main but on the other branch) I need to listen for the event of validation being completed.I'm importing myEvent (custom event) class to urlValidator and when the validation is complete I'm triggering the dispatchEvent.At the same time I'm importing the myEvent to myMenu class and trying to listen when the myEvent was dispatched (from urlValidator).

I am curious in what strategies people are using (if they are using) the Key events inside of their classes. I am trying to build up a character class and I wanted to encapsulate the movement inside of the class.

There is a bad gap in my knowledge with Event Dispatch and Event architecture, and this problem proves it.
[URL]
Click on "Flash Banners"
The two thumbnails represent two different classes. Each class is identical. Both are "extends Movie Clip" classes. Tweeners of various types control the hover and click methods. URL Loaders load the thumnails which I then wrap in MC's and make them buttonMode = true, etc. Hover and click to load the Banners on the thumbnails.
The problem is this: - I can't send an event from the Eagle movie clip or the T2D movie clip to tell the other to fade out. Both Banner classes are instantiated through a separate Base class. I'm sure this has to be an Event Dispatch from one MC to another and that it can't be done by the Base class. how I can send an Event or Event Dispatch and what the code structure is so one movie clip can in one class can tell the other movie clip in the other class to disappear while it's neighbour is playing.

I have a main application Planner.mxml. This view has a couple of custom components, one of which is LoginView.mxml. In LoginView.mxml I do the following:
protected function btnLoginClick(event:MouseEvent):void
{
try
{
[code]....
As you can see, when the user is successfully logged in, I want to dispatch a custom event; if not, I show an alert box. However, this event doesn't dispatch (or at least, I don't know how to listen for it).
I would like to listen for it in my main application where I can then change my viewstate to the logged-in state. However, the event never seems to get there. I listen for it by having loggedIn="loggedInHandler(event)" on my loginComponent.

I'm using ActionScript 3 in Flash Professional and I'd like my class to raise an event, not a custom event but an existing one. I've set up my class so that it extends EventDispatcher. In the documentation [URL] the example declares a custom event by adding a static String variable:
class CustomDispatcher extends EventDispatcher {
public static var ACTION:String = "action";
I assume that enables:
dispatcher.addEventListener(CustomDispatcher.ACTION, actionHandler);
Or at least auto-complete when you've typed 'dispatcher.addEventListener(' into the Flash Professional IDE.
But lots of classes that raise events raise a mixture of existing noncustom events. For example if you have an instance of a flash.netFileReference and type
fileRef.addEventListener(
A long list of potential events to listen for is given including DataEvent.UPLOAD_COMPLETE_DATA, Event.SELECT, HTTPStatusEvent.HTTP_STATUS, SecurityErrorEvent.SECURITY_ERROR, etc.
If I want my class to be registered to raise those existing events, what code do I need? Preferably so that the IDE knows instances of my class may raise the event and suggests them in the addEventListener auto-complete/intellisense list.

I am using the Timer class to time events. Although, I am not sure I have it set up correctly as after a few seconds the events start to get synchronized. first two, then three, etc. Here is an example of the code:
[Code]...
Does anyone know what could be possibly interfering with the Timer for this to happen? It mainly starts happening after you click on an mc and it is removed from the stage (this is for a game).

I'm having a total brain fart right now because I haven't dealt with AS2 library linkage classes in a while. I want to be able to let a designer assign an object in the library to a specific class and have that class listen for changed _x and _y values.I have the class made up that extends MovieClip:
Code:
class CoordinateMonitor extends MovieClip {
public function CoordinateMonitor () {}
}
But I draw a blank now on how I'm to monitor _x and _y values for the clip. I'm pretty sure I remember it being possible to do this and declaring an overriding function ("public function set _x(val:Number) { super._x = val; }") does not work as intended.

I have made a site in AS3.0 code and it's working fairly well but theres alot of things i'm trying to update to make the code a little more reusable. For startersI have a function that creates a little pop-up text when I roll over a button. The text is a class that I created in the Flash IDE instead of dynamically drawing it with actionscript.Here is the code for the pop up text instance called "enter_text" as it rolls over the movie clip "preloader_mc"
Code:
//add listeners to the preloader_mc movie clip on stage
preloader_mc.buttonMode=true;

However, it seems to me as I've started building this (or trying, rather) that there's no way this can be done, but I'm sure I'm wrong. Since the static class is never added as an instance to the display list, the stage (or any object for that matter) will never hear any events it dispatches.I've searched and found this, but that doesn't seem to be the right solution since I'm listening for my custom LinkEvent event from the stage, and *not* in the class calling the dispatch function in the static dispatcher class.And to reiterate, the goal is to have a single class I can use throughout my application that dispatches my custom LinkEvent event with two properties: linkURL, and linkTarget.The whole reason for wanting to do this is so I can have some control over what happens (to track, or do some other behavior) when someone clicks on a link created within an htmlText TextField with an <a>

I have an <mx:Application> which contains a <mx:Module>. This module has several child modules. It also has some an instance of a class I have created. I am trying to have a method of this class dispatch an event that can be "heard" by the module and handled. This isn't happening.To be more clear, I am using 'dispatchEvent' to from inside a class method.There is an instance of this class in: mx.core.Application.myapplication.mymodule.myclassIt is the 'myclass.somefunction' that dispatches the event. I have a listener registered in 'mymodule'. Nothing happens when the function/method runs, however.

in Adobe tutorials, they suggest to create a class to handle the events (see below the copy/pasted code, and link to page).I was wondering if I have to handle all events with the function handleAllEvents, using if statements to check if the target is the one I want, and the event is the one I want.i.e. if (event.type=="click") && (event.currentTarget == "myId")Should I have a list of ifs (for each target and each event type ?)[code]

I came to some misunderstanding how to use events. LOL. I thought I understand it but as I see I dont.
I've got a Engine document class where Hero is added, and Cannon object too. In body of Hero I need to dispatch event when Hero reaches some point or particularly a pitfall, so I've got static const string to handle it:
[Code]...
but this way I would end up with dozens of handlers in the Engine body class, and I am trying to minimize this class as it is big enough without those handlers. I am stunned and suprised, and I am noob again. Maybe someone will clear out how to get custom events working/... and why only instance of object that dispatches an Event can hear it (my case).

I'm curious about event performance. I have a custom class that downloads files from a server and writes to your local system with AIR. This class has a few custom events that fire during a download process: File starts downloading, files finishes downloading, error occurred, progress, and a few others. This class was built for a specific project, but made coupled so it can be used for anything else wanting to download a file from a server. I'm starting to implement it into a new project, and a few events I'm not listening for, such as when the file starts downloading, or the progress of it, just the complete.
Does it strain overall performance having all the other events still dispatching, when I know they aren't being listened to? Would be be better to comment out the dispatchEvent() for the specifics I know aren't used, or does it even matter? There's obviously events dispatched throughout the SDK that aren't always listened for: Right click, drag, resize, etc. This makes me think it doesn't matter that these events fire but aren't handled, but since code is running and things are happening, that means there is performance going on.

I'm new here, so maybe i'm posting in the wrong channel. Please tell me if it is the case. I'm trying to get a simple client socket class to work with events. I'm writing an AS2.0 component that extends the UIComponent and I have the following movieClipLoader defined in the init() function:
Code:
movieClipLoader_mcl = new MovieClipLoader();
movieClipLoader_mcl.onLoadProgress = loadProgressRoutine;
movieClipLoader_mcl.onLoadComplete = loadCompleteRoutine;
[Code]....
The really strange part is that even though I get this error at compile time, the actual event handling functions (ex. loadProgressRoutine) actually run when they're supposed to. So even though Flash is complaining about the properties in the MovieClipLoader not existing, it uses them when it has to...
"why is Flash complaining" and "how do I make Flash *stop* complaining?"
