ActionScript 2.0 :: UI MovieClips, Values Stuck In Scope?
Mar 1, 2010
I have an MC on stage containing user interface elements.Within that MC, I have another MC with an onRelease event that calls to a function.The function it's calling sets/toggles a variable.
The problem is this: It's setting the variable in a scope that's available for the function and the MC within the user interface container, but I also need to make it available to _level0 (to be written to a file via an existing CGI script we have). I've tried setting this from within the function, having a loop that copies all the values from that scope to _level0, but I haven't gotten it to work.
The existing software I'm creating this for is convoluted, and we're stuck with it, so the goal is really just getting those variables into _level0, and not something that might be cleaner or make more sense.

I have a movieclip added to the stage through a function.
ActionScript Code:
function myFunctionOne():void{
var myClipA:clipA = new clipA();
myClipA.name = "myClipA";
addChild(myClipA);
}
To access this item on the stage I have to use:
ActionScript Code:
getChildByName("myClipA");
I have some other movieclips INSIDE this clip that have also been dynamically added. If I want to reference one of those clips I have to reference them by name using getChildByName.
[Code].....
But is there a better way to reference movieclips if they are created inside a function, or is there a way to create them so they are always globally accessible?

I have a movie which is serving as a button.When you rollover the image, it grows, and stops.When you rollOut, it shrinks, and stops.This code works fine. The Problem:When you scroll the mouse over quickly, the animation get stuck and doesn't execute the rollOut code.This is most likely because the first rollOver action hasn't yet completed.Here's my code:
thumb_test_4.onRollOver=function () {
this.gotoAndPlay(2);
}[code]....

In the project I'm working on, there are towers the user can place. However, it you place a tower higher then another one, it appears infront of that one, which looks weird.I want to be able to arrange all the towers so that that does not happen.There is an sprite called towerHolder holding, which all the towers are children of, and an array called towerArray, which the towers get pushed to when they are created.I tried clearing towerHolder, then running the sortOn() function on the array, and then adding each tower back to the towerHolder, but the towers just seem to be randomly placing themselves irrelevent to their height.Here's my code for the relevant parts:
Actionscript Code:
function clearTowers():void { while (towerHolder.numChildren > 0) { towerHolder.removeChildAt(0); }}function orderTowers():void { clearTowers();

I have 6 movie clip objects and I want to assign them all a value for when the user clicks on them. This value is to be hidden from the user but I will later use it with an additional software to capture the value. I assume this will be done by using a dynamic text field for when the movie clip is pressed.

point in the right direction if there's been a post previously on this, I did a search but didn't find anything. So my problem is that I'm creating objects dynamically and adding them to a movieclip container. I.e. click button -> generate new instance of Item class -> container.addChild(item).
[Code].....
What on earth am I missing?! I've googled and found working examples of that, but it just does not do the trick for me. I'm compiling the project as an Adobe AIR file, but as far as I'm concerned, it should not intervene with the x and y values of the movie clips. I also tried getting the values by methods in the Item class, but with no luck.

I am creating a card game application in that dynamic movieclips created on stage and inside those movieclips different cards can drop, which have some values.
If one movieclip contains one card and another movieclip contained two cards and all the other movieclips 3rd,4th,5th.. etc contains some cards then, if i want to go back and want to drop another card at the top of the old one, than how i can do this, because when i go back and drop a new card inside movieclip than it replaces the old one. i don't want to create a new array for each movieclip.

I have made a script, and now has come the point when I need to use removechild. Whenever I try this I get an error. After looking at the problem, I think I need to learn more about scope and packages. I think if I put everything in the correct scope, I will be able to use the removechild command. I tried to make all my vars public, so that removechild would work, however I got an error that anything public needs to be in a package. I tried to add the package part to my script, but got the error that packages cant be nested. I tried some other things and still no luck, just more errors.
So, if anyone could point me to a tutorial, or recommend a book or something, that will help teach me about scope and packages, Or if you are feeling patient and generous, and you think you could explain this problem to a 5 year old, please explain it to me the way you would to said 5 year old. If you maybe think you can help me out on the script, it can be found here: [URL]

I seem to have an array scope issue. I have a global variable; var itemConnect:Array = new Array(); Which is initialized at the start. I then have a function to populate it as a 2-d array:
[code]...
It seems to have scope access to just one of each of the [i] nodes, so [1][2], [1][3], [1][4] are missing - only the last [j] element appears. What is the correct way of doing this? I also don't know the exact size of the array at the start which may be an issue.

OK, it's probably easiest now to explain my problem like this, I am able to write the name of my xml file that needs to be loaded to a dynamic textfield on the stage, however, I don't seem to be able to access it after this and strip the necessary data from it, here's my code:
var tf:TextField = new TextField();
tf.autoSize=TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT;
tf.border=true;
addChild(tf);
[Code]...
So all I want to do now is to be able to achieve the same thing but loading the xml with loadvars as I did before, from my traces it seems there is a scope issue, but I'm not sure why if "c1" can be referenced like it is above..?

I am creating an interface that has a few different states for the different steps. For those steps, there is data that I am pulling in from a database to fill certain fields. As of right now I am doing one db query to get all of the data back and want to fill in all of the fields at the same time but it is giving me "access to a null object reference".
It seems as though there is a scope issue when you are trying to access a text input field with actionscript when the state that the text input is in, isn't the current state.For Example (This would throw a "Null object reference" error):
<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" minWidth="955" minHeight="600"
creationComplete="init()">

We (AS3 coders) all know that one of the great things about the AS3 event model is that handlers are scoped to their containing objects. I'm writing an EventDispatcher for JavaScript, and trying to achieve the same effect.My question could be answered in a couple different ways:A: How does ActionScript 3 set scope within an event handler to the handler's container object, rather than to the event handler's caller (the IEventDispatcher on whom dispatchEvent() was invoked)?

I recently changed the setup of my project from only having one SWF, to loading in my main SWF through a preloader. I'm facing a problem of scope. My old code for targeting things no longer works. This is it.
ActionScript Code:
if (this.parent.contains(Credits)) {
Credits.gotoAndPlay(120); CreditsText1.gotoAndPlay(120);
}
What would I change this code to in order to target the exact same spot in my loaded SWF? I should add that all my code is in an external .as file, which is set as the DocumentClass for the loaded SWF. I've tried both "this.parent.parent.contains" and "this.contains" Neither worked.

I was writing some stuff today and i realized that variables inside a class are not constrained to the constructor or method scope. In my opinion this is utter lazynes. Scopes need to be fully enforced to force programmers to comply with correct OOP styles and organization.
to force yourslef to comply with the standards, when reffering to the consturctor always use the 'this' prefix and use 'var' for all temporary variables that should be inside the method scope.

Take a look at this code:
Code:
import mx.utils.Delegate;
class Test
{
[code]....
Well... Doesnt work at all... In the class, there isnt a instance of i, so, how may i access this property inside a class function? But i still have an way to access the class.
I could do this way:
Code:
class Test
{
function Test(mc:MovieClip)
{
[code]....
But this way, doesn't sounds good
