ActionScript 2.0 :: Check For External Variable To Show Update Notifications?

I was wondering if it's possible to show a notification for new updates in a swf file.
Like what if I upload a .txt file somewhere and inside it there's a variable, something like;
Code:
newupdate="Version 2.0 is ready for download at domainname.com."
And this will show up in a text field somewhere in my swf file. Is this possible? Are there any pros and cons about using this method of notification?

I'm using flash CS4 and actionscript 2.0. I have a situation where I need to locate and check the date of an external file (either .exe or .swf) and return that date string to a variable in flash. I then need to display that date to a piece of dynamic text within the flash file. Is there a function within action script that will check and retrieve the file date of an external file.

I've been using CS4 to create flash 10 applications. It works well in other browsers, but IE 6 will not tell the users that they need to update their Flash Player. Instead, it will play the flash as if it's a video (keep looping from frame 1 to end) without allowing any interaction..

I'm using text that is set to "dynamic text". In actionscript 3 I tried:
instancename.text = "abc";
trace(instancename.text);
Trace returns "abc" when I test the movie but the appearance of the text doesn't change.
In action script 2 I tried:
var1 = "abc";
instance1._text = "def";
trace(var1 + instance1._text);
Trace returns "abcdef" when I test the movie but the appearance of the text doesn't change.

I have the following script:

and I want these targetpath rewritten with the new variable of positieMC everytime I click the button. But somehow this doesn't work. I have the idea that theze targetpath are not rewritten when I click the button.

I have developed a chat site and would like to add a sound notification (beep or something) when there is a new message kind of like facebook chat.
I know this requires flash but have no idea on how this could be accomplished. Can anybody explain how to make this or a good resource that explains it?

I've searched a LOT, but dint get the solution to this: Is there a way to display flex notifications in Windows taskbar, ie, the notification should still be visible even if the application s not exactly frontmost in the monitor..There are ways to do this on AIR, or even flex4..but not Flex3??

In the PureMVC framework, Proxies communicate with the ApplicationFacade (and thus any interested components) via a Notification. Should this Notification be sent via their own instance, or the Singleton instance of the ApplicationFacade? Frankly, does it matter?

The second method looks more verbose and less intuitive to me. Moreover, the Proxy has the ability to send Notifications, which, in my mind, means it probably should. Are there instances where the Proxy should only send a Notification via the ApplicationFacade instance?

I am trying make a movieclip pan across the stage on a set path, I have 5 buttons, when button 2 is clicked, the movie clip is moved to position 2, its moved on a timeline so a function starts playing the movieclip, on the timeline inside this movieclip there are conditions on specific frames showing where the the timeline stops, so when button2 is clicked a variable is created which is "label2" and the timeline stops on this point, as seen the the condition below[code]....

I want to constantly reload data from a text file on a website, and make that data the .x property of a movieclip. Like this: movieclip.x = int(externallyLoadedData);I know how to do this, but I want it so I can ftp rewrite the text file with a different number, and the flash movie updates live without having to refresh/restart. I searched this a number of times, but I haven't found the answer was.I am new to scripting, so I am still finding what works and doesn't. So far I have added a number of variables in the engine I am creating. I want the player to click the button. Once press it will affect many of variables. The thing is I want to make the button unpressable if one variable is <= a number, lets say 100, and another term is true: number(_root.var2)/number(_root.var1) > 2).Here is what I have so far:
