I'm trying to get a value from a function which is a URLLoader COMPLETE event but even with declaring variables outside of the function will not allow me to get the value out. I'm stuck.It seems that the Asynchronous nature of Flash makes it impossible to get a value out: e.g. this works:
// Initialise a URLLoader to get XML data from XML file
var myFPBLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
myFPBLoader.load(new URLRequest("flightPlannerBoard.xml"));

I was wondering something to do with global functions, it seems if you declare a function as global inside the first frame of a movieclip...and try call it from the first frame of the _root timeline it does not work.
Example.
This code is in a movieclip on the first frame of the timeline called "my_mc";
Code:
_global.Test = function(){
trace("Test ok!");
}
Then the code on the main timeline, first frame would be a call like this.
Code:
Test();

I've looked arround and cannot seem to find exactly what I am looking for.I have a movieclip that I want to get a number of instances to the stage. Instead of declaring them individually (which works):
var a1_mc:monitor = new monitor();
var a2_mc:monitor = new monitor();
var a3_mc:monitor = new monitor();

I have a problem that I have read a few other threads about, but the solutions that are offered don't seem to work for me.
The solution offered was to declare the tween variables outside the function....
I have done this, but every now and then it doesn't finish the tween.
Here is my code for that part..
Code:
var alphaTween:Tween;
var myTimer:Timer=new Timer(150,0);
myTimer.start();
myTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, addMC);
[Code]....

I am working with URLLoader and URLRequest in this case.
I have two buttons. One listens for the mouse click event and then runs the following function (less code not applicable to this question):
function loadURL (e:MouseEvent):void {
....
var myRequest:URLRequest=new URLRequest("*URL*");
myRequest.method=URLRequestMethod.POST;
[Code]....
The other button, when clicked, calls another function, say resetAll, that then resets the "session" by clearing out all the current variables and canceling anything currently in progress. Within that function I want to call myLoader.close(myRequest); but myLoader is not accessible from within resetAll.
In this case, should I declare var myRequest:URLRequest=new URLRequest("*URL*"); and var myLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(); outside of the function even if I do not need them yet?

Is there or is there not possible to access _global variables between domains? on [URL] i have index.html and index.swf. Index.swf then loads main.swf from [URL].In index.swf i have a _global variable that i want main to use. When calling for it all i get is undefined. The only way to access it is if i call for it using _parent or _root.
I have allowed the domains to communicate using
System.security.allowDomain("http://www.Domain1.com");
System.security.allowDomain("http://www.Domain2.com");
I have also put a crossdomain policy file on both servers..cross domain policys since i CAN access the variables and functions using _parent and _root...or is it?

Can you please tell me why this isn't working? It takes me 10 minutes to test the movie every time and it's taking me forever to fix things. Do I have to do something else with the variable names I'm using or something?

I realize that the issue of global variables has been discussed several times on this forum in the past. I have carefully read each one but I could not find any clear, definitive answers. Let me first give the basic idea of what I plan to do with Flash.
I will be simulating electrical, pneumatic, etc diagrams. I will, for an example, have a circuit breaker that can be clicked, thus changing its state from open to closed. Once this is changed, the flow from that circuit breaker will also be changed. This could all be accomplished inside of this file fairly easily, but this Flash file will be linked to hundreds of other flash files, each containing a unique drawing, but the variable for that circuit breaker, and all the other conditions need to be passed from drawing to drawing.
I have spent a lot of time researching online and browsing this forum, but I cannot find a solution to this problem.

In as2, we had global variables which were accessible from anywhere within the movie. How can i achieve similar functionality in as3? You see, in my site, after a user logs in, there are several pages, and each of them calls a php script, and i need to pass the user id as a parameter to them! So as soon as the user logs in, I need to store his id in some place, which i can read from any class or subclass within the whole movie! Can you please tell me how to do this? oh and yea, i am new to as3, so please try to be as descriptive as possible!

Where do I place a function, at the lowest level, so I can call it from any other container above it? For example, I have 3 frames and they all need to use the same function, called "myFunction()". Do I really have to create it in each frame? There has so be a lowe level where this can be placed? Is there a good simple description of AS3 Hierarchy somewhere? Also, how do you specify global variables in AS3?

I'm trying to create an object/variable in my .fla file which will be accessible to functions located in my .as files. How do I do this?
Example:
Code:
// code in timeline of sample.fla
var player = new myObject();
[code]...
Normally, I would get an error from the second code block, saying that it doesn't know what "player" is. So how is this done correctly?

I've done a search and all I could find are creating global variables through Classes.
Is there a way of creating them on the timeline? I have a preloader.swf that loads another swf to itself and would like to read the values off of the parent.

I'm trying to create a global variable that initially stores a 0.Then via a function will change the value of that global variable, and allow the other functions to access the new number. I have it working where it adds 1 to the variable, and stores the number 1 however, I cannot get the number to add up beyond 1.I have this in my first layer,frame.
_global.thisSound = 0;
function PlaySound(){
temp = _global.thisSound;
[code].....
