A coded page can really come together with the right commenting structure and make it really easy to read for someone coming into a project without any knowledge.

Set Style For A Cell In Datagrid?

Feb 2, 2010

I am using a datagrid in flex and need to render each cell with a different style.What could be the best way to set a style to a perticular cell in datagrid/advanced datagrid (flex)?

I think one possible option can be extend the datagrid and override the drawRowBackgroungd function. Apart from this can i use some custom item renderer or some property similar to label function of a series, there it used to return label here we need a style.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Drag And Drop OS-style

Sep 23, 2009

I'm looking into having a interface using multiple windows which you can drag by pulling the dragbar around.Each window would be a movieclip called *****_win and inside would be a dragBar that the mouse has to pull around to move the window.I have searched a lot on google, and decided to end up asking here.

1) All the code I used so far did not have any borders. (The borders would be the stage, not an image).

2) Whenever I dragged an object, it would drag the whole window.

3) If the cursor left the window while dragging (which is does a lot), I have to drag it again.

Anyway how I can do an OS-like way of dragging a window?

Create A Shooting Style Game?

May 7, 2010

I am at uni and have a project to create an interactive game for the story Johnny Mnemonic. I would like to create a game whereby the player has a whip type weapon, there is an opponent jumping up and down and with the whip you attack them and cut off limbs -

I'm thinking it would be like a simple shooting ducks style game in terms of coding, the player has visible just a hand with the whip in it, you move the whip to your desired location click chosen button to hit, the whip then animates a flick, if it hits correct spot on bouncing opponent then an animation of the limb flying off happens, so the bouncing opponent is like the duck and the whip like the gun - if that is right at all?

ActionScript 2.0 :: RPG-style Dialogue In Flash 8?

Feb 9, 2011

I'm building an RPG game and need help with the dialogue. I have no idea how to go about it. What I want to set up is something that after approaching a character and pressing spacebar (or any key), text displays with an image to the left of the character speaking. I've tried looking up tutorials but they all seem to be for CS3 (I am using Flash 8).

I currently have no code whatsoever to share, since...I don't know where to start =/ . Source codes would be appreciated, but most of all, I'd love a link to a tutorial or past thread that explains in detail (and layman terms...) how to do something like this, since I want to learn as I go.

Flex :: GWT Style Code Splitting?

Dec 22, 2009

I do a lot of work with GWT but don't have experience of Flex. I was talking to a guy today who was looking at moving some large Flex based applications to GWT due to the Flex application getting too big and using too much memory in the browser. This is a problem I have had before with GWT - browser apps using lots of memory as all the code gets loaded when it starts.

However, in GWT 2.0 there is now a code splitting feature to overcome the problem of the client code getting too big. This allows all the code (javascript) not to be loaded as one big file on start up but instead code split into different files that can be loaded when required.

I was thinking as to if there is anything similar in Flex. I assume the Flex application code all lives in one single SWF file which loads at start-up so this approach is not possible but thought there might be other solutions.

CSS :: Most Effective Way To Style Flex Application?

Feb 2, 2010

I have a fairly complex Flex application that uses many different components. I want the application to be able to custom styling and/or skinning. I also want to be sure that the styling approach makes the most efficient use of system resources (memory, CPU, network), and that it does not adversely impact performance. We currently are using a hybrid approach to styling the application that uses both CSS and a Flash skin created in CS3. It seems odd to me to have a two-pronged approach to styling an application and ideally would like to settle on one approach or the other. Some outline about advantages and disadvantages of using either exclusively CSS or a Flash skin? Is there a justification for using both within the same app?

Using CSS exclusively seems advantageous because it is approachable by anyone with a basic understanding of other uses of CSS, especially when using the Flex 2 Style Explorer. On the other hand, I know that the CS3 skin we use declares up/over/down/disabled/pressed skins for each component where these states are needed and Flex manages the transitions to the appropriate skins as each state is (de)activated. However, my impression is that creation of a Flex skin in CS3 requires somewhat specialized skills and tools. So what would you recommend for styling a Flex application if performance, customization, and efficient resource utilization are priorities?

Actionscript 3 :: Replacement For C Style Structure In OOP?

Feb 28, 2010

I am a student with a mainly electronics background getting into programing. The more I get into it, the more I realize how bad I am at it. I am trying to get better at OO design.One thing I have been reading about is the use of Getters and Setters.

[URL]

Now I can see the point they are making here but I am still unable to see away around some simple problems. And this brings me to my question (finally). I am setting up a simple tower defense game in AS3 as a learning exercise. I want enemies to follow way points so I was going to make an array of way points, and make that a property of a map object. And a way point was to be an object with an x and a y property (more like a struct).
