Flex :: GWT Style Code Splitting?
Dec 22, 2009
I do a lot of work with GWT but don't have experience of Flex. I was talking to a guy today who was looking at moving some large Flex based applications to GWT due to the Flex application getting too big and using too much memory in the browser. This is a problem I have had before with GWT - browser apps using lots of memory as all the code gets loaded when it starts.
However, in GWT 2.0 there is now a code splitting feature to overcome the problem of the client code getting too big. This allows all the code (javascript) not to be loaded as one big file on start up but instead code split into different files that can be loaded when required.
I was thinking as to if there is anything similar in Flex. I assume the Flex application code all lives in one single SWF file which loads at start-up so this approach is not possible but thought there might be other solutions.

I'm looking for some help with the following script:
Main Class:
Code:
package {
// Flash Classes
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.Event;
[code]....
Now, I'd like to move the blue color coded script to the separate package. When I do that, I've got many reference errors. how the code should look like, when it's in separate package, with all the references to variables that work? And how to call this function from Main class?

I'm not so advanced that I understand all of the jargin in how to replace pictures within already written code. I want to make the Tsunami style and was hoping that any of you might know a source with code already written and all I have to do is change the pictures and convert it into an SWF file. I'm still not that comfortable with Flash Action scripts so I'm looking for something that is relatively self explanitory.

I am using - file.save(output.text,"testFile.txt");But its is saving everything in 1 line. When I open the file using notepad everything is coming as Single line.Does flex provide any functionality using which I can save the contents of multiline Text Area into .txt file?The output string has got the '' but notepad is not able to recognize it. Is it a Flex issue or Windows notepad issue? If it is notepad issue then is there any way to work around this from Flex file io?

I've got a project that currently uses classic dynamic text fields that pull in information from an XML file. The text contains a 'keyword' that's referenced in the XML, that can be situated anywhere in the complete sentence. This keyword needs to be a different colour and font size... but as I said, it can appear anywhere.
Currently this works by getting the keyword from the XML, finding its length, finding the index of where it starts, splicing the main string, and then setting TextFormat to the number of chars in keyword, which changes the font size and colour for just that keyword in the sentence.
This works great for the classic dynamic text boxes. It doesn't however work with TLF text, it just applies the new format to the entire text field. I don't have any experience with TLF text as I've just upgraded to CS5 and now need to make this work in Hebrew.The code snippet for the keyword colour change looks like this:Where screen01Norm & screen01Key are things pulled from XML & screen_01.txt_box_combined is the text field.
var newFormat:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
newFormat.color = 0x319aca;
newFormat.size = 50;

If you have two text areas with different styles (fontFamily, weight, color etc) and you copy text from one to the other it also copies the style from the originating text area. Is there any slick way to prevent that?
Here is a sample of code that will illustrate the problem. Type some text in the top box and some text in the bottom, then copy some characters from the top box to the bottom. I'm not using htmltext.[code]...

Is it possible to style the string returned from the labelFunction so I can change color and font of the callout (inside)? Or some other way? (It seems like a big limitation to have that only return a string that is unstylable.)

Basically i have a form that features mostly text inputs, i would like to change the style of the input boxes based on the current state. I can do this in the mxml on each input...

Are there any libraries out there which will help me style a Flex application without going insane?
For example, is there any "accepted" way to set an element's size/position without hard-coding it into each element?

i have a var lets say 'x' x="i like cheese and want to eat it everyday" i want to split the var x by every 10'th character, assuming the 10 chracter is not in the middle of a word , then i want it to split it before that so that no words are not cut out...
ex:
x="i like cheese and want to eat it everyday"
arr[1]="i like " 7chars causs 10th char was inside 'cheese' and spliting of words is not allowed
arr[2]="cheese and " 10 chars exactly , splits at space
arr[3]="want to " 8 chars 10th char inside eat .. u get the idea by now i hope
arr[4]="eat it "
arr[5]="everyday"
so its splitting the variable every 10th character.. if the 10th chracter is a space, if it is not it backs up to the previous space and for the next array slot starts from there

I have a fairly complex Flex application that uses many different components. I want the application to be able to custom styling and/or skinning. I also want to be sure that the styling approach makes the most efficient use of system resources (memory, CPU, network), and that it does not adversely impact performance. We currently are using a hybrid approach to styling the application that uses both CSS and a Flash skin created in CS3. It seems odd to me to have a two-pronged approach to styling an application and ideally would like to settle on one approach or the other. Some outline about advantages and disadvantages of using either exclusively CSS or a Flash skin? Is there a justification for using both within the same app?
Using CSS exclusively seems advantageous because it is approachable by anyone with a basic understanding of other uses of CSS, especially when using the Flex 2 Style Explorer. On the other hand, I know that the CS3 skin we use declares up/over/down/disabled/pressed skins for each component where these states are needed and Flex manages the transitions to the appropriate skins as each state is (de)activated. However, my impression is that creation of a Flex skin in CS3 requires somewhat specialized skills and tools. So what would you recommend for styling a Flex application if performance, customization, and efficient resource utilization are priorities?

So i decided to implement some themes in my AIR app. I have converted my CSS files into SWF files, removed the Style linkage from my main file. Based on the user preferences stored in a file, I decide which theme to use. i.e; load the SWF file using StyleManager class.
I made my application window invisible, added a StyleEvent.COMPLETE event listener for the IEventDispatcher object returned by StyleManager.loadStyleDeclarations method. After the StyleEvent.COMPLETE occurs, I made my main window visible.
The problem i have now is, for a few seconds, i can see white canvases and all my components without any styles before using the style selected. I want to know if my approach is correct or do I need to make any changes to implement this properly?

I have figured out a way to change the style of tabs at run time with following logic:
var cssStyle:CSSStyleDeclaration = StyleManager.getStyleDeclaration(".MyTabs");
cssStyle.setStyle("borderColor", "red");
But here ".MyTabs" class is applicable to all the tabs between first and last tab. As per getStyleDeclaration javadoc, it only accepts "class selector" and "type selector" not the id selector.
How can I change the individual tab style at run time?

On a webpage, is it possible to split large files into chunks before the file is uploaded to the server? For example, split a 10MB file into 1MB chunks, and upload one chunk at a time while showing a progress bar?
It sounds like JavaScript doesn't have any file manipulation abilities, but what about Flash and Java applets?
This would need to work in IE6+, Firefox and Chrome. Update: forgot to mention that (a) we are using Grails and (b) this needs to run over https.

I'm currently working on a little project of mine, where I have a character and a number of different items like clothing,hairstyles etc, which over time.. hopefully will grow into a tremendous amount.The thing is, if I have eveything in one fla file, there'll come a time where it becomes too bloated/large and Flash will eventually lag.So, is there anything way I can keep for example.. all the clothing in a separate fla/swf and the main character in another fla.But when I publish.. They all combine back together?I customise the character dynamically with references to linkage identifiers.. So I need a way which allows them to be split into different swfs, but still be able to call to the right clip.

I am always using LoadVars to load in data from PHP or whatever and it normally always works. But some times my result data is split into multiple variables when there is only meant to be one var. I think it always splits on ampersands ("&") which makes sense, as they are used to tell Flash when a new var is starting.
I was wondering if anyone knows more about this, and if there is a way around it. Usually I get around it escaping the characters on server-side, but I recently have a project where I cant change the data that is sent to me.

My air app is using the FlexChrome instead of the system chrome. The problem is I also have a .CSS for skinning that sets the skins for the Button class. This is also changing the 3 buttons (minimize, maximize, close) in the flex chrome which is undesired. Is there a way to make it not effect the Flex chrome buttons?Also the css file is in a central location and I use it for many apps so I would like not to have to change the css file but change something in my app only so I do not effect other projects.

Several new UI/Query frameworks allow you to "bind" UI elements to data structures. When data in the structure is updated, the change propagates to the UI element, automatically. Some examples of this include the [Bindable] tag in Adobe Flex, and the "Bindable LINQ" extension for .NET .
