ActionScript 3.0 :: Access A Getter In A Class I Am Extending?

Apr 6, 2009

I am currently making a class called TiltVideo that extends BasicView (papervision3d).

BasicView has a getter function that returns a camera that I need to access.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Access The Document Class Directly With A Getter?

Oct 25, 2010

I am start developing small games (I have just finished reading a nice book from Rex van der Spuy) but I would like to use the best OO approach.Let's make a very simple example: suppose that i have a Player class which adds a listener to the stage waiting for keyboard events in order to move around the stage.I have also some enemies on the stage and the player must register a collision with them; what is the best approach in order to access the enemies on the stage and check for a collision with them on the ENTER_FRAME player's event? I have read a lot of solutions, but I am just starting coding and so I don't know which one is the best approach.

a) Access the document class directly with a getter (e.g. Main(root).allEnemies, supposing that every time an enemy is created it is added to the allEnemies array)?

b) A singleton class which has a reference to every instance in the stage?

c) I have read about using events, how?

Actionscript 3 :: Access Properties And Methods Of A Class Without Extending Or Instantiating?

Jan 9, 2012

Let's say I have a defined ClassA. ClassB extends ClassA and there's a Movie Clip instance on the stage linked to ClassB. How would ClassC access the properties and methods of ClassB without extending ClassB or creating a new instance of ClassB? The way I'm currently doing it is by referencing the stage instance linked to ClassB and then using the dot syntax to access ClassB instance variables, and this works only if the the accessed variables are public or internal, depending on what package ClassC is part of. I would like to know if there's a better, cleaner way to accomplish this.

Actionscript 3 :: Getter / Setter Class & Scope In OOP

Feb 19, 2012

I recently completed a tic-tac-toe game in AS3, using some simple function-based code I had written in C many years ago.Now I'm on a quest to do it the "right way" using OOP techniques and best practices.Everything is now divided into neat little packages, it looks pretty, and the last part of my journey is to get all the little buggers to communicate with each other.I want to move the code which holds the game state from my main to it's own class in com.okaygraphics.model.GameState.The problem is nearly every other package gets and sets these game state properties.I'm trying to figure out the simplest way to encapsulate this stuff, while still allowing my other classes to access it.

1) Do I need a constructor? I mean, my program will never have more than one GameState. If I should call my getters/setters as instance methods, how do I get each other class to reference the SAME instance from their respective packages?

2) Do I even need getters and setters? Perhaps the class could just have 3 public properties? If so, how would I acheive the proper scope with regard to my other classes?

3) Should I assign everything to the class itself using the static keyword? If so, how would I implement and use those static methods?

4) Is this a mistake? Did I totally just program myself into a corner?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Communicate An Object To Another Class With A Getter?

Nov 20, 2010

I have a document class .as file and I'm trying to communicate an object to another class with a getter. But it's nested inside another movie clip. The compiler says the movie clip it's nested in is undefined. Also, the moviecllip it's nested in is on the stage, dragged manually from the FLA LIbrary and has the instance name, gamelevel1 in the instance name box. I referred to it when I put the _player movie clip, which I'm trying to communicate with the getter, on the stage via and addChild method. Anyway here's the friggin' document class script:

package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.Event;
import flash.display.Bitmap;
import flash.display.BitmapData;

ActionScript 3.0 :: Custom Class Setter / Getter Are Blank

Oct 23, 2009

I have written a class, which is basically a textfield for forms. It will eventually have several validation modes built into it too, which will be set by setting a property of the object.anyway, my problem. Basically my setters are empty if the movie is used as a loaded swf within another movie.I have an Event listener within the class listening for the Event.ACTIVATE event (still not sure exactly what this does...) though i do know that i need this in place for the setters/getters to work.If i create objects from my class, set some properties everything is spot on, though the moment i load this working movie into another movie the Event.ACTIVATE does not fire.[code]Now, if i run this movie its perfect - everything works as it should, right down to the validation.however, this movie is to be used within another movie. When i load this movie into a parent movie my fields aren't added to the movie.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Extending SimpleButton So Can Access Its Child Objects?

Jul 3, 2009

i have a simple navigation system with three buttons, each button have a text field in it. On mouse over they change color to blue. I can achieve all these without a single line of code. I simply make a button of my text field in flash, and change the color of the text in the timeline.

My problem occurs when i want to make the color to stay blue when i click on the button. Apparently you can't access the child within a button, in my case a dynamic text field.  I've googled this problem and they all say that you should use a MC instead of a button. Thats exactly what i have done so far. But i'm getting tired of writing a bunch of eventlisteners and put an extra layer with an invisible button in my button mc so i can get the hand cursor (because the .buttonMode  = true and useHandCursor doesn't work when there is text field inside the mc). Any way, shouldn't there be a more elegant way to solve this problem?

I've been trying to build a new base class for my button that extends SimpleButton, and from there access the embedded  child object, but the problem remains.

In this example i'm trying to simply change the text of the text field inside of my new MyButton instance. But i get the same old Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

package
{
import...
public class Mybutton extends SimpleButton

AS3 :: Flash - Extending Array Access Operators To 'wrap' Out-of-bound Index Values?

Jan 17, 2010

I'd really like to be able to make Flash's array access syntax 'wrap' over the array's bounds.

Lengthy explanation -

var array:Array = ['a','b','c','d','e','f'];

To keep things simple, the first index is 0, and its value is the first letter, 'a'. To get that value, we'd do this -

array[0]; // returns 'a'

As long as the index you're using to access the array is between 0 and array.length (6 in our example,) everything works fine - but if you use an index outside of those bounds, you're shut down.

array[-3];
array[9]; // both return 'undefined'

Sometimes that's a good thing - sometimes you expect that to happen, and you're fine with it. Other times, you find yourself wishing (or at least I find myself wishing) that it'd behave a bit more like this -

array[-3];
array[9]; // both return 'd'

(e.g. a photo gallery that jumps back to the beginning when you click 'next' on the last photo)There's a little chunk of code I use over and over for this sort of thing, but it's always to alter the index before passing it into the array:

var index = -3;
while(index < 0){index += array.length}
array[index % array.length]; // returns 'd'

... and that's fine, but what I really want to do is extend the Array object itself so that it'll automatically 'wrap' index values that go out of bounds.TL;DR - Is index-wrapping possible by extending Flash AS3's Array object?

ActionScript 1/2 :: Extending The MovieClip Class?

Mar 3, 2010

I want to add a property to the MovieClip class. I just have a bunch of MovieClips that are placed on the stage by reading an XML file and creating lots of clips according to the information in them. Now, I need to know which MovieClips were created below previous clips, and I figure that the easiest way to do so would be by extending the MovieClip class and add an order property.I have some problems though: I don't know how to set or get this order property within the main clip, I don't know how to place this clip within my movie, and I don't know how to create them dynamically (do I just do something like var myNewObjectOfExtendedClass : myExtendedClassName = new myExtendedClassName?)

This is the code I have on my extended class, called Expando.as:

ActionScript 3.0 :: Extending The Custom Class?

Feb 12, 2012

I made the transition to AS3 two years ago, but I still carry with me old AS2 habits. Could someone please help me understand how I extend a custom class correctly. I have the bad habit of putting most of my code in one .as file (the Document class), but I use a few custom classes now and then. What I'm tring to figure out is how I would extend a class of this type:

public class ClipDragger {
private var _clip:MovieClip;
public function ClipDragger(clip:MovieClip) {
_clip = clip;

[code]....

For example I would like to add a MOUSE_MOVE listener, and also add actions to the drag function.

Because I have this as code and can't get a trace[code]...

All I can find online are examples of instanciation, not inheritance when connecting/accessing the document root:

Is extending from a document root impossible? I can create a new instance, but branching out seems like a dead end.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Extending The JWPlayer Class?

I'm having an issue extending a class in the JWPlayer API, but I think it's probably more of an issue of the way I'm extending the class in AS3 rather than the class itself. Here is the code:

package {
import com.longtailvideo.jwplayer.events.*;
import com.longtailvideo.jwplayer.parsers.*;

ActionScript 3.0 :: Extending From Entity Class?

am attempting to make a simple asteroids game using push button engine. In the game the ship should fire when the user pushes the spacebar button.To do this my KeyboardController class should make a new instance of the Bullet class on every tick when the spacebar is down.The problem is for some (probably simple) reason I can't extend the Entity or IEntity class. IEntity is an interface so I understand why I can't extend that, but I'm not sure why it's not letting my extend entity. Heres my code for calling the bullet constructor:

if (PBE.isKeyDown(InputKey.SPACE)){
var _newBullet: Entity = Bullet();
}

and here is the first line of the bullet class.

public class Bullet extends Entity{...}

ActionScript 2.0 :: Extending A Class From MovieClip?

extending a class from MovieClip? I could just make a movieclip variable in the class to make it simpler. I heard if you extend from Movieclip it makes it feel like its dynamic because you have frames (gotoAndStop, etc). However, it allows me to have direct access to variables (or this.) instead of somemc., and I believe thats faster because 1) smaller name variable lookup, 2) no get function call.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Why Is Extending MovieClip Class Different

Jul 9, 2007

I've been going through the OOP AS 2.0 tutorial here on Kirupa, and I was curious WHY this code is in a class which extends the MovieClip class and is used to affect a linkage item in the library:

Code:
// init method for arguments which in other normal
// circumstances (non-MovieClip classes) would be
// given to the constructor. Not an option with MovieClips

[code].....

Is there something undocumented about why I wouldn't pass those parameters in when instantiating a new instance of the class in question? What is different about extending the MovieClip class?

If I use a different class name (e.g. DataGrid2), the error disappears.I never intended to leave the subclass in an unnamed package. ActionScript 3.0 :: Extending The String Class?

Aug 28, 2009

I'd like to write a class that extends String, changing the functionality of several methods such as charAt to incorporate the Welsh alphabet. The reason for this is that the Welsh alphabet is as follows: as you can see, some "letters" actually contain two characters, which messes up any charAt operations, etc.

Is it possible to extend String? When I try, I get "base class is final".

I found this thread on another forum which talks about doing this, but has no mention of it not being extendible:[URL]..

The trick here is that both the Normal and Small modes can *also* go fullscreen as well, though you'll never be able to switch between Normal and Small in the same session (it's determined up-front).
