Flex :: Extending A Class With Multiple Classes
Jul 16, 2010
I'm creating a class that extends another class.
public class ASClass extends UIComponent{
}
but I'm trying to make it extend multiple classes. Is this somehow possible? I read it may be possible through composition?

I have a library symbol, exported for Action-Script and to Frame1. Now in the document Class, i write
public class Test
{
public function Test():void
{
[Code]....
Now the code works fine but when i write my own (sealed/fixed) Box Class that surely Extends MOVIE-CLIP, statement-2 gives error , i know the Box Class is not dynamic but the Movie-Clip is Dynamic. Now what i understand that Movie-Clip Class being dynamic becomes fixed/sealed when it is extended by any Fixed/sealed Class???

I'm trying to create a base class for components by extending Group in Flex 4, but I can't seem to define the layout through MXML. Any time I try to move the definition to a subclass of my base component, I get the following error:
Error: Could not resolve <s:layout> to a component implementation.
Judging by that error, it seems that some magic from the framework's side goes into assigning it for a Group and thus the compiler fails when trying to assign it for any other classes. Does anyone know how this is supposed to work? how to allow me to define it in subclasses?

I am trying to extend the TextItem class in Flex 4 but I keep getting the following error:
Could not resolve <custom:txtIdNumber> to a component implementation.
My txtIdNumber.as is as follows
package custom {
import spark.components.TextInput;
public class txtIdNumber extends TextInput {
public function txtIdNumber(){
super();
[Code] .....
Initially I thought that I might be extending the class in the wrong way, but all the examples I found look the same.

I want to extend the FileReference class of Flex to contain a custom property. I want to do this because AS3 doesn't let me pass arguments to functions through event listeners, which makes me feel sad, so I need this property to exist on the event target, so I can access it.I also want to be able to cast extant FileReference objects to this class without any fuss. I have:var fr:SmxFR = e.target as SmxFR and I want that to work; right now it just returns null.A blank, newly instantiated SmxFR object has the extended property in place, but all of its inherited properties and objects return Error: Error #2037: Functions called in incorrect sequence, or earlier call was unsuccessful.[code]I get living handle property from that, and all other (that is, inherited) properties throw Error #2037.So, maybe what I want to do is going to require overriding FileReferenceList? If the original objects must be instantiated to SxmFR, that's what I'll have to do, since I'm using FRL to allow the user to select multiple files at once. Are you guys sure there is no way to fast from a FileReference to my class?

What is the correct way to import 'sub' classes into a main class?What i have is a class (i call it Console) that gives the user info about the swf for debugging, but also gives the user the ability to give their input to dynamically change the swf. Sorta like what games have when you press the "`" key.But it handles more things then just read user input, it also connects to the Database through PHP and connects through the server using Sockets.And there are more of those things that gets added later, so to prevent it gets to big later i want to split it into multiple .as files
Console Class: renders stuff and allows user input.I want that to include the following classes:
ConnectPHP Class (handles php > mysql)
ConnectJava Class (handles sockets)
So that the methods in those 2 classes are accessible in the Console class like:
[code]...
I tried importing them but then i had to access them through the Object initialized:
[code]...
But i want to access them as
[code]...
removing the reference of the ConnectJava Object. Is this possible? If you wonder why, id like to keep it as simple as possible because i share the classes with my friends.

I have created a file called Config.as, in it are getter and setter methods that define variables that I need to reference throughout my system.
I have obviously made a mistake as I tried to access a variable in two files as indicated in a demo below:
Code:
package {
import Config;
public class TestOne {
[Code].....
It seems quite clear to me that I have created two instance of the Config class and that is why in class TestTwo the trace statement doesn't return "hello world". Is there a common coding practice to access the same variable with multiple classes?

I'm trying to design a class that uses functions from multiple classes, but as Google tells me, you cannot extend multiple classes.
Here's my code:
Code:
package com.levelGenerator {
import flash.display.Sprite;
import flash.events.KeyboardEvent;
[code]...
How do I use the Keyboard functions and nextFrame() without extending multiple classes?
P.S. A language with object-oriented principles that doesn't allow multiple inheritance? Lame...

Is it possible? If so, what's the preferred way? I'm seeing lots of ArrayUtil and StringUtil AS3 classes, but I don't like using them as it defeats the purpose of an object (StringUtil.trim(str) instead of str.trim()).

If I have a class that extends another, e.g.,
package {
import flash.display.Sprite;
public class MySprite extends Sprite{
[Code]....
and extend that class, if more than one internal classes are defined:
package {
public class MainClass extends MySprite {
public function MainClass():void{}
[Code]....
ReferenceError: Error #1065: Variable MainClass is not defined.Note that this only happens (as far as I can tell) when the public class of the package extends another class, and multiple internal classes are defined. The internal classes don't even need to be instanced or referenced to generate the error (the bare-bones code above will error out). If only a single internal class is defined, it works fine (no error). Even if the internal class is instanced.

can you declare multiple classes and then register each movieclip from the library to a different class? It isnt working for me.I created two different classes and created two entire different movieClips and registered each movie clips to a different class.However, I can only use on movieClip at a time, when I use the duplicateMovieClip... command to create copies of the movieclip, i find that only those movieclips, whose class i declared first, appear on stage.

What is the difference between importing a class and extending a class, I know that when you extend you add all the properties/methods of that class to your own class, but I am still un sure of what this actually does for you and your program, I am pretty confused on the topic and I couldnt find the difference between the two on the internet, also how do you know which one of the two you need to do?

my understanding of extending classes is that you gain all the functions and methods of that class thus You could over ride any one of them. How ever I am confused on weather or not you inherit and can over ride private methods of the class you are extending or if you have to have all methods public in an extended class.

I've recently come to a roadblock in my code for a non-visual class I created; a sound class if you want to know. At first I coded with it extending Sprite (I can't remember why I started it out that way, but that's the way it was). When I came back to this code, I thought that extending sprite doesn't make any sense if it's an audio class and non-visual, where is no real reason to add something to the stage if you can't see it. So I removed "extends Sprite" from the class and errors started popping up around "dispatchEvent" coded areas. I then tried putting back the extention with "extends Object", hoping that would solve the problem; got the same thing. I've searched with google on why I can't use dispatchEvent on objects or classes not extending anything, but it only came up with how to use dispatchEvent with the usual MovieClip or Sprite tutorial.

I'm currently developing a game in flash and want to be able to divide up my .fla assets in a way that means artists can work on a game menu .fla in isolation from the game.fla and rest of the game code.If I could briefly explain how I've approached this so far, I would be extremelyMy project is setup like this:HighScoreMenu.fla -> document class HighScoreMenu extending GameMenu class.game.fla ->document class game.asgame.as class loads the published HighScoreMenu.swf and manipulates the menu i.e. animates on and off screen via inherited functions in the GameMenu class.
Now this seemed to work to begin with, until my code evolved and upon going to publish my HighScoreMenu.fla flash started complaining about symbols being used in Game.as that were in Game.fla... If I'm only publishing the HighScoreMenu which extends from GameMenu then why is it even looking to compile Game.as

I'm trying to compile AS files using the mxmlc but the particular class depends on other classes. My command is something like this: mxmlc -includes classA classB -source-path=. com.example.com.classC.
This gave me classC.swf but when I loaded it, it was still looking for classA.swf and classB.swf. Is there anyway I can have just one swf file?

The examples I'll use don't do anything - they're classes without ANY members - no variables, methods, anything.
Let's say I extends Sprite and call it MySprite.
I save it in test.core
[code]...
Now I create another custom class called MyWindow that extends MySprite.
I save it in test.windows
[code]...
Then I create another class that extends MyWindows (the example I'll use is a document class - but that doesn't matter - I've tested using an instance too).
[code]...
Notice that I'm not even trying to instantiate the helper classes - just having them there throws the error.
If there is only a single helper class, everything runs fine.
Also note that - as far as I can tell - this only happens when extending one class from another package, then extending that class with more than one helper object.I'm pretty sure there's no namespace bumps or typographical errors, as this is a very pared-down version of the original application.
EDIT: seems the problem exists even without the crossing packages - even extending MySprite in the document class with multiple internal classes generates this error.

I found this sentence while googling out for Flash help: "Add 3 frames to your timeline. Drop a TextField on your Stage & make sure it extends over all the 3 frames." I was not able to accompolish the second task of this. I added the frames, dropped a TextField on the first frame, but could not find a way to extend it over all the 3 frames.

I want to add a property to the MovieClip class. I just have a bunch of MovieClips that are placed on the stage by reading an XML file and creating lots of clips according to the information in them. Now, I need to know which MovieClips were created below previous clips, and I figure that the easiest way to do so would be by extending the MovieClip class and add an order property.I have some problems though: I don't know how to set or get this order property within the main clip, I don't know how to place this clip within my movie, and I don't know how to create them dynamically (do I just do something like var myNewObjectOfExtendedClass : myExtendedClassName = new myExtendedClassName?)
This is the code I have on my extended class, called Expando.as:

I made the transition to AS3 two years ago, but I still carry with me old AS2 habits. Could someone please help me understand how I extend a custom class correctly. I have the bad habit of putting most of my code in one .as file (the Document class), but I use a few custom classes now and then. What I'm tring to figure out is how I would extend a class of this type:
public class ClipDragger {
private var _clip:MovieClip;
public function ClipDragger(clip:MovieClip) {
_clip = clip;
[code]....
For example I would like to add a MOUSE_MOVE listener, and also add actions to the drag function.

Is this possible? Extending From the Document Class?
Because I have this as code and can't get a trace[code]...
All I can find online are examples of instanciation, not inheritance when connecting/accessing the document root:
var mySubTest:TheSubTest = new TheSubTest();
Is extending from a document root impossible? I can create a new instance, but branching out seems like a dead end.

I'm having an issue extending a class in the JWPlayer API, but I think it's probably more of an issue of the way I'm extending the class in AS3 rather than the class itself. Here is the code:
Code:
package {
import com.longtailvideo.jwplayer.events.*;
import com.longtailvideo.jwplayer.parsers.*;
import com.longtailvideo.jwplayer.utils.*;
[code].....
All three of the final functions do not return values even though I have event listeners only calling those values one Event.COMPLETE (of the loaded SWF that contains this script).

am attempting to make a simple asteroids game using push button engine. In the game the ship should fire when the user pushes the spacebar button.To do this my KeyboardController class should make a new instance of the Bullet class on every tick when the spacebar is down.The problem is for some (probably simple) reason I can't extend the Entity or IEntity class. IEntity is an interface so I understand why I can't extend that, but I'm not sure why it's not letting my extend entity. Heres my code for calling the bullet constructor:
if (PBE.isKeyDown(InputKey.SPACE)){
var _newBullet: Entity = Bullet();
}
and here is the first line of the bullet class.
public class Bullet extends Entity{...}
