ActionScript 3.0 :: Extending Classes With Private Methods?

Aug 18, 2011

my understanding of extending classes is that you gain all the functions and methods of that class thus You could over ride any one of them. How ever I am confused on weather or not you inherit and can over ride private methods of the class you are extending or if you have to have all methods public in an extended class.

Actionscript 3 :: Access Properties And Methods Of A Class Without Extending Or Instantiating?

Jan 9, 2012

Let's say I have a defined ClassA. ClassB extends ClassA and there's a Movie Clip instance on the stage linked to ClassB. How would ClassC access the properties and methods of ClassB without extending ClassB or creating a new instance of ClassB? The way I'm currently doing it is by referencing the stage instance linked to ClassB and then using the dot syntax to access ClassB instance variables, and this works only if the the accessed variables are public or internal, depending on what package ClassC is part of. I would like to know if there's a better, cleaner way to accomplish this.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Classes: (not So) Private Variables?

Feb 21, 2007

ActionScript Code:
class Vector2d extends Math {
private var x:Number;

[Code]....

I can't seem to get my private variable, x, to be private. From my understanding of private variables, tracing n.x should throw an error, and adding 150 should throw an error. I've tried changing the variable's name, and the cast type, to no avail. The first trace goes through, the addition goes through, and the second trace goes through.

I'm new to classes, so I could easily be overlooking something vital. But the vars need to be private, because I want to use get/set to update the variables when one or another changes. For instance, if 50 is added to the y value, the magnitude and unit vectors would change, so I want to update them using getMag and getUnit. That whole system would be thrown off if the user had direct access to the properties.

ActionScript 3.0 :: BUG: Cannot Use Constants In Class With Private Classes

Dec 27, 2009

I have some code from a CS3 app composed of the .FLA file with an .AS file for the class that had definitions for two private classes in it. Yesterday I brought the files into CS4 and noticed that they did not compile. Gives an 1120, access of undefined property and names a constant. I have reduced this problem down to bare bones and it still occurs, so it is a bug in CS4.

Actionscript 3.0 :: DispatchEvent For Classes Extending Object?

Mar 9, 2010

I've recently come to a roadblock in my code for a non-visual class I created; a sound class if you want to know. At first I coded with it extending Sprite (I can't remember why I started it out that way, but that's the way it was). When I came back to this code, I thought that extending sprite doesn't make any sense if it's an audio class and non-visual, where is no real reason to add something to the stage if you can't see it. So I removed "extends Sprite" from the class and errors started popping up around "dispatchEvent" coded areas. I then tried putting back the extention with "extends Object", hoping that would solve the problem; got the same thing. I've searched with google on why I can't use dispatchEvent on objects or classes not extending anything, but it only came up with how to use dispatchEvent with the usual MovieClip or Sprite tutorial.

Actionscript 3 :: In Flash Does Extending An Object Use More Memory Even If The Object's Methods Aren't Used

Jul 20, 2011

I am creating an object pool to cache some recyclable objects in memory at the outset of my application in order to avoid (as much as possible) the performance issues caused by GC running; if possible I'd like to minimize the memory my object pool reserves, so I'm attempting to pool generic forms of the objects (with no methods) and then casting the generic variants to more specific and complex object types which extend the generic form when I actually want them on the stage.

The trouble is that to do this requires the generic variant class to import/extend MovieClip (because the more complicated objects are themselves MovieClips and make use of DisplayObject methods)-- does simply importing and/or extending a class add to the memory an object takes up when instantiated even if it never uses methods from the inherited class? It makes sense that it would, and some light profiling seems to suggest that it does, but I'm not 100% certain. About how large should an 'empty' MovieClip instance be in bytes?

Now this seemed to work to begin with, until my code evolved and upon going to publish my HighScoreMenu.fla flash started complaining about symbols being used in Game.as that were in Game.fla... Actionscript 3 :: Flex 4: Can't Define S:layout For Subclasses Of Classes Extending Group?

Sep 9, 2011

I'm trying to create a base class for components by extending Group in Flex 4, but I can't seem to define the layout through MXML. Any time I try to move the definition to a subclass of my base component, I get the following error:

Error: Could not resolve <s:layout> to a component implementation.

Judging by that error, it seems that some magic from the framework's side goes into assigning it for a Group and thus the compiler fails when trying to assign it for any other classes. Does anyone know how this is supposed to work? how to allow me to define it in subclasses?

Private Function And Private Variables In Flash?

May 25, 2011

there are classes definitions where all their methods are private my question is why are they private, because i've tried a code wherein i changed all the private access modifier to public and nothing changed!

what if you make an instance of that class with all its method private, how are you be able to access that on another class. coz i know private methods are only accessible to the class where they are declared! will the instance of that class be able to access the superclass's private methods!

on private variables, it's still not clear to me as to why make a private variable and then use a getter and setter, when you can simply make it public! are these variables called static?cause on the way i understand it private functions and private variables are static?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Private Class Not So Private?

Nov 26, 2006

Okay so you've got your private vars in your AS2 Class, you think they're all safe right? Wrong.

Doing a trace(MyClass.myvar); will spit out an error that the var is private and you can't touch it.

But a trace(MyClass["myvar"]); will work perfectly fine. You can use it normal, without any setters getters outside the class.

Is there a way to protect against this? I think this is a huge security flaw. I know it's simple OOP, but a private var in an object should have rules.
