ActionScript 3.0 :: Call A Function From Timeline Syntax
Dec 28, 2009
I have a function I want to call (just once) when the main timeline enters frame 6. The function is also on the timeline. How can I do that without a listener? Or what listener would I use?

I have some functions defined at the main timeline, and I need to call them from a class, how can I do this?
I've tried object(parent).function();
and object(root).function();
but didn't worked
those functions need to be on the main timeline because they removeChild() of the class

I have a main time line and a button defined. Can I define functions in actionscript anywhere and call them from anywhere? For example, if I call a function in main timeline and it's defined in the button, does that work?

I am working on AS3 and I have a created a button class which have an off state and on state. I did the class and it works fine, but i need a little fine tuning. Right now I am polling the button state from the root(main timeline) by checking a boolean property in the button class. I feel it is quite inefficient to check the button state on every enterFrame event of the main timeline. Rather I would prefer the button to tell the root time line by invoking a function written in the root, whenever a state change occurs. t should be cleaner , right?? But when I try to access a function in the root which goes like this

I'm having a bit of a hard time with calling a function in the main timeline through a button in a movieclip. The mc is in the main timeline and in it I added a button with this.removeMovieClip(); and so far it works, but when I try to call a function from the main timeline it just doesn't seem to work.

I'd like to keep all my button code on the made timeline as a discipline I'd like to start. I have a button instance named aboutBtn in a movie clip. That movie clip is nested in another movie clip. That final movie clip is on the main timeline and given an instance name of menu.
Would my syntax for onRelease then be:
_root.menu.aboutBtn.onRelease = function() {
Or would it be:
_root.aboutBtn.onRelease = function() {
Or:
_root.menu.aboutBtn.onRelease....
What would the syntax to give that button an action be?

I'm trying to use ExternalInterface.Call to call a JavaScript function to launch a lightbox window. So far I have this:
AS3:
flash.external.ExternalInterface.call("launchLB", "" + aUrl + "");
JavaScript:
function launchLB(url) {
alert(url);
[Code]....
I get the alert but I can't get the lightbox window to display. When my as code makes the ExternalInterface call I get what looks like a page refresh and a blank browser window.

I have an enterFrame action that I use on a graphic:
[Code]....
Because I want to use the above code more than a few times, I tried to make it a function.
[Code]....
But for some reason the function call does not work when I call it via an action on a graphic where initially the code worked when it was explicitly written and not called as a function.
Code:
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
fadeOut();
}

why this is not working.I have an application with a new class I just created. The class loads, but will not call it's own internal function.
package com.parkerandkent.components.classic.photogallery {
import caurina.transitions.Tweener;
import flash.display.MovieClip;[code]....
"Test 2" will not fire here.And I get this error message:
CallTag.as , Line 10 1180: Call to a possibly undefined method init.

I need to get a javascript var in my Flash application. I like to be able to just set a variable in the javascript (client constraints) rather than define a function.
Can this be done? I am trying to use the ExternalInterface.call()
AS:
ExternalInterface.call("function(){return window.someVar}", null);
JS:
var someVar = "Test";
This does not work and I suspect it is because the ExternalInterface.call() does not like the anonymous function.

I have a function defined in JavaScript like so:
function fadeBack() {
alert("fadeBack called");
};
I call that function from my Flash file like so:
import flash.external.*;
flash.external.ExternalInterface.call("fadeBack");
This works in both Safari and Chrome, but for some reason Firefox won't ever call the function. Still, I can't figure this out. How can I fix it?

stop();btn001_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,showimage1);function showimage1(event:MouseEvent):void { gotoAndPlay(10);}btn002_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,showimage2);function showimage2(event:MouseEvent):void { gotoAndPlay(20);}
however movie is playing without stopping to "Listen" for a Mouse CLICK. Images placed at frame 10 and 20 should appear only when CLICK'd.
This code is straight out of Classroom in a Book CS4.

I've written some code for a simple event handler that should tween a sub menu onto the screen when the user rolls over the menu button. (instance name menuBtn) However, although I thought the code was written correctly, the syntax error "missing left brace ({) before the function body" has appeared in compiler errors. Below is the full code:
import fl.transitions.Tween;
import fl.transitions.easing.*;
function subMenuHandler(event:MouseEvent)void
