ActionScript 3.0 :: Controlling A Timeline From Nested Buttons?

I have a straight forward flash document where the play head plays from start to finish. The client wants a way to stop and start the animation if time is needed to discuss what is happening on screen. Simple buttons can easily do this if those buttons are not nested.
Code:
stopBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onStopClick, false, 0, true);
playBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onPlayClick, false, 0, true);
stopBtn.buttonMode = true;

However, if I make a mouse over pop up movie clip button and place those button inside it, they do not work. I can not find the piece of code that will link these nested buttons back to the main time line.

I am slowly getting back into flash again and I have an MC (lets call it M_sms) that on a rollover has an animation. I have several of these M_sms on the main stage and there is no problem. The M_sms have also been placed inside a MC (lets call it M_big) that has also been placed on the main stage. M_sms for some reason do not animate on rollover. I have a startdrag/stopdrag on the M_big and that works fine. But the M_sms nested do nothing.

i've made a drop down menu that works fine as it goes for dropping down when moused over the button which triggers is menu. but when im trying to add functionality which is triggered by the nested buttons that drop down i cant control the frame position of the main timeline does anyone know how i can do this.

i have forward/back buttons to control the timeline. what happens in the following code is that if the button is clicked while in the < or > range of frames, it gets buggy. heres the code.

this doesnt seem to go to the exact frame i need if i click while the current sample is still animating in. It would be much better if i could tell flash to a specific frame instead of asking flash to determine a range. that way, if a button is pressed during an animation it wont just advance one frame, it would jump to a specific frame.
I wish i could just do this:

i thought about creating a var that would be a string. i could then add a number to the name of that string each time the button is clicked. then i could make frame labels the name of the string. but i couldnt get my head around it. also, i didnt know how to make the button stop adding to the string name once it reach a certain value (6 in this case). or how to make it play the last sample animation if the user kept clicking the advance button at the end of the samples.

This is my first time coding a website using ActionScript. So far everything has went very well, I designed the website in Photoshop, and imported to Flash CS5. Then I cleaned everything up, and started adding navigation to the various pages using buttons.The website is constructed in a very simple manner, there are five main pages and they are connected by buttons on a static navigation bar (the first page, home, doesn't have a corresponding button). Then there are nine sub pages, that each contain information on a character of the game, and are connected to corresponding buttons in the 'Character' layer/MovieClip. My four menu buttons (Story, The World, Characters, Extras) all navigate correctly without problems.
The problem arises because inside my Characters page (a movie clip) are nine buttons, each linking to a different page. These buttons should bring the timeline to the frame specified, but when the buttons are clicked nothing happens. I've spent hours searching for a solution to this, but with no avail, and I have a feeling the answer is prettysimple.gotoAndStop("gowang", "Scene 1");line in the Gowang character button function with:MovieClip(root).gotoAndStop("gowang");

I have a Nav Bar on my _root timeline. Inside of which I have buttons and MC's. I want to have all the code for my buttons on the _root timeline. So, I can adjust from there.
Below is an example of what I'm trying to do from the _root timeline Actions Layer:

Basically I am trying to get buttons that I have in a drop down menu load an external .swf into an empty movie clip placed on the main timeline. However for some reason it is not working. The buttons are contained in a movie called "menuItems" which is then placed in a movieclip called "mainMenu" which is then placed on the main timeline.

I usually use this code to navigate the timeline from buttons:

How would I code navigation if the button is nested in two MC's? I've been using the code below. It works fine for one button but once I try to code the second button (which is on the same frame and in the same MC's) it gives me this error: 1151: A conflict exists with definition _root in namespace internal. I have a main.fla which has 3 movieclips inside it. All 3 mc's have timelines that run 40 frames. The main.fla timeline has each mc instance on a frame. mc_1 is on frame 1 mc_2 is on frame 40 mc_3 is on frame 81 as the main timeline plays the clips each one fades to the other. I need to know how to target this scenerio after mc_3 plays I need to have a goToAndplay (20) set up so the animation inside mc_1 starts playing (frame 20) of mc_1.

I have an animation of a spinning globe made from 2 maps placed back-to-back and a circular mask over them. The animation loops endlessly to simulate a spinning globe. This animation was made into a movieclip (globeSpin) which is nested inside another movieclip ontainer_mc). I want to stop the spinning effect when a user mouses over and start it up again when they mouse out. Code is below:

I have a movie clip nested in frame 2 (* = movie clip in frame 2), it looks like this:

When I test the movie it skips over frame 2. What type of action script (AS2) do I need either in the movie clip and/or in frame 2 to get the movie to play before proceeding and stopping at frame 3?

I have 3 navigation buttons and an empty movie clip on the stage. Clicking each button loads a 'page' into the empty clip, and each 'page' is a movie clip in the library. When the movie initially loads, the 'home' page movie clip automatically loads into the empty clip on the stage and plays to a frame half-way through. When a navigation button is clicked I want to finish playing the loaded movie clip, remove it, load the new 'page' into the empty clip, and play it (also to the half-way point). I have been able to accomplish everything except getting the name of the loaded 'page' clip and making it play to the end. This is what I have in frame 1 of the main timeline with the code for 1 button:

I've got a play and stop buttons on the stage which are controlling some 3 nested MovieClips, It controlls Well the MovieClip which is located on the first frame, but when I want to stop/play the other two MC's (frames 2 & 3) I get the following error -
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at jukebox_fla::MainTimeline/playMP3()
I know the problem is that I just can't control any other Nested Instances of a MovieClip Unless it is located on it's First frame. How can I stop/play the other 2 MC's (Frames 2 & 3) by coding from the main stage?

I've got different skins on my flash site. the site becomes skinned when a user clicks a skin button and the related MC's in my movie go to the appropriate labelled frames with the .png graphics for that skin.
I pretty much just use go to and stop for that and it works great on static (non-animated MC's). I've got one situation though where my MC is animated (it slides up and out of the way to reveal content underneath).I need to be able to tell that MC to go to and stop on the correct frame and then STAY THERE! I'm having trouble figuring out how to make it stay there. At present it defaults back to its first frame whenever it is tweened (animated).

Main_mc has a movie with a button movie and an animation movie. I want the button_mc to control my main_mc timeline. I want a btn when rollover play up to frame a and stop. Rollout play to end. If btn is clicked play and stop at frame a.

I am trying to "gotoAndStop" on a frame in a nested timeline from the main timeline, but can't seem to figure out the correct way to write it with it's 'parents' etc... this is how I have tried which makes sense to me (have tried other ways too) but no success.

Well, I have a project where I would need a XML with a % range from 0-100 to controll a timeline. The concept is to fill a bottle. So the timeline would animate from empty to full. But must be controlled with a XML number and its all in AS2...

I never seem to get any answers on these forums lately but surely someone can answer this. I've loaded an AS2 based SWF in to an AS3 SWF. I want to gotoAndPlay a frame in the AS2 SWF when a button is clicked thats inside the AS3 SWF.

if its possible to control a movieclips timeline a bit more than the simple play, stop functions.
I was hoping by pressing a button, it would make the MC's playhead not just jump to frame 20, but play to it.
So if the movieclip's timeline is on frame 60, I press a button and it scrubs all the way back to frame 20. Click another button and it scrubs to frame 40, etc..

I have a MC in my movie. I want to control it's properties in different frames in the main timeline. For instance
at the 1. frame change it's position
at frame 50 change it's alpha
at frame 100 change it's scale
until now I have done all this by motion tweening but I know AS is the best way.

This time I'm attempting to make a timeline, that should control what frame of a movie clip on the root timeline is displayed. So relevant to where the user slides the slider bar, the appropriate information will be displayed inside that movie clip. Now I really have NO idea where to start the coding that will attempt to convert the slider's location on its on slider bar, to what frame is shown on that movieclip.

I have buttons that load movie clips when you mouse over them and unload the movie clips when you mouse out.[code]the problem is that the movie clips aren't necessarily playing from the beginning when you mouse over, since their timeline is independent.How can i specify that I want to add the instance of the movie clip to play from frame 1.I've tried using the gotoAndPlay method with the frame number/ label in parenthesis afterwards and got an error message..I've looked through multiple tutorials on controlling symbols using AS, and i still can't get this to 'click' for me.[code]
