ActionScript 3.0 :: Document Classes And Library Instances

Jul 14, 2009

1. I've got a Main Document class, that loads external swf each with its own document class (they are pages and pieces of the site).

2. The Main class makes use of some movieclip simply instantiated from the GUI library. It all goes fine.

3. The external swf have references to the Main class, and here start problems: when I compile them, I get an error for every library mclip used by Main. See the attachment. A simple trace(Main) is enough to start getting all that errors.

A partial solution is to uncheck Strict Mode in publish settings

Actionscript 3 :: Inside The Library Use Of A Bunch Of Classes/packages - Expose One Of These Classes?

Feb 3, 2012

I am creating a library in AS3. Inside the library I make use of a bunch of classes/packages that need not be exposed to the end user of my lib. I want to only expose one of these classes.

I guess my questions are:

1) How are libraries commonly distributed in AS3?

2) Is there a .jar equivalent in AS3 that developers can include, but will only have access/knowledge of the classes I've declared as public?

ActionScript 3 :: Accessing All Instances Placed In Different Frames From Document Class?

Aug 11, 2011

I have programmed a game using the Flash authoring tool and a document class. I'm trying to graphically add instances and add functionality in the document class. Suppose I have a main timeline with 3 frames, each frame reperesents a different level of the game. In frame 1 I have an instance of the MovieClip class named tree1 on the stage and in frame 3 I have an instance of the MovieClip class named tree3 on the stage. In my document class, after an initial stop() command, I want some logic like:
tree3.scaleX = tree1.scaleX;
But tree3 is unknown to the runtime since we are not of frame 3 yet. Any way to access all the instances on all frames declared in the authoring tool from the document class?

ActionScript 1/2 :: Arrays Within Custom Classes - Different Instances?

Jul 13, 2010

I have made a very simple custom class for keeping track of groups of offices for a company. The class has a Number variable to tell it how many different offices there are, and an Array to store the individual offices by name. It looks like this.

class officeCluster{
static var _className:String = "officeCluster";
// variables var numOffices:Number;
var locationArray:Array = new Array();
// functions function officeCluster() {
trace("officeCluster constructor");
}}

Now, it is my understand that when I create different instances of the class, they will each have their own version of "numOffices" and their own version of "locationArray". When I run traces of "numOffices", this seems to be true. For example,
trace(manufacturingOfficeCluster.numOffices);
trace(servicesOfficeCluster.numOffices);
yields
5
4

In the output panel, which is correct. However, there is trouble with the locationArray. It seems that as I assign different values to it, regardless of what instance I specify, there is only ONE array- NOT one for each instance. In other words,
trace(manufacturingOfficeCluster.locationArray[1].theLocation);
// theLocation is a String. The locationArray itself holds Objects.trace(servicesOfficeCluster.locationArray[1].theLocation);

Is anyone aware of any issues partaining to using Arrays within Class instances? I've been able to work around this by creating multiple arrays within the class and using a different one for each instance, but this seems very sloppy.

Flash :: Access MovieClip Instances That Are Already On The Stage In Document Class?

Dec 15, 2011

I have created a game in flash, and due to the nature of the game, I have many movieclips placed on the stage manually in Flash CS4. They are not programmatically added as children to the stage, and so I am having difficulty getting access to them in the document class. So far the only method I have been able to use is to do stage.addChild(active_area); (for example), but there are many movie clips, all very differently named, so this method seems incorrect.I've discovered that my MovieClips are not children of the stage, but in fact MainTimeline, as when I for loop through stage.getChildAt(i);, only one child, root1, is traced out. How can I access movieclips that were placed on the stage in the timeline from the document class, without having to manually add them as children to the stage? So it looks like my problem wasn't that I couldn't access the MovieClips, it was that I wasn't modifying the MovieClips' values, so I wasn't registering any change in them.

Here is the code after I fixed it:
function manage_cursor(e:Event):void {
prevX=currX;

Flex :: Storing Instances Of Classes In Shared Objects

May 26, 2010

Is it possible to store instances of a class in a cookie or in shared objects.

Basically in my application I have an object "Diagram" that the user can create. If they hit save, I want to store the current instance as a cookie and allows them to reload it later.

Alternatively, I could see about getting them to store the saved version on the hard disk. But even then, all I want to save and retreive is my actionscript object.

I've tried storing the object to SharedObject.data.diag, but when I try to retrieve the object from the cookie doing SharedObject.data.diag as Diag returns null.

Actionscript 3.0 :: Preload The .swf Itself Using Document Classes?

Mar 24, 2009

I'm trying to go from inline scripting to document class, and having a very hard time going there..! at the moment I'm trying to preload my flash/swf'en, when loading it in html.

I've managed to do it inline style,check out an example here

this flash has 2 layers, a script layer and a content layer. each layer has 2 frames. in the first layer I have this code:

Code: Select allimport IndexPreloader;
var _indexPreloader:IndexPreloader = new IndexPreloader();
setupPreloader();
function setupPreloader():void {

[Code].....

when using this setup, it's as if all the content of the .swf is loaded before the preloaderen is started.. so the preloader has nothing left to preload and starts and stops almost at once.

Actionscript 3.0 :: Communicate Between 2 Document Classes?

Aug 31, 2010

I have 2 different swf files with their own separate document classes. My first SWF file is main.swf and it's document class is called Main.as (its the main container that loads in external swfs). The file being loaded into main.swf is called step1.swf and it's document class is called Step1.as. I have a next button in step1.swf that when clicked needs to tell the document class controlling my main.swf (ie Main.as) to load in the next external swf. However I don't know how to call a function in one document class to from another document class. And I don't know if that fact the swf calling the function being loaded into the other makes this situation more complicated. I've looked around but I cant seem to find the answer anywhere. Basically I need these two separate document classes to communicate between one another.

Here is the code for Main.as (the doc class for the container SWF):

Code: Select allpackage

ActionScript 3.0 :: Defining Values Of Variables For Classes, Subclasses, And Instances?

Jan 5, 2010

how subclasses,instances,and inheritance work. The below code isn't actual project code, it's theoretical code, generalized to a simplistic level so that we can talk about the big issues.Let's say I have animals_app.fla, with a "Dog" class MC and a "Cat" class MC. Both "Dog" and "Cat" are subclasses of "Animals"; animals_app.fla uses document class "Main".

Intuitively, I think Animals should declare that every subclass should have some animalSpecies, and each subclass will define the value of its own animalSpecies. It wouldn't make sense for Animals to provide any default value, because it will always be different per subclass. Is this correct? I had tried out some code similar to that below, and was perplexed because it seemed like whenever a subclass tried to define a value for its own animalSpecies variable, it was actually changing the value of the variable in the Animal class, but that's not what I want. How do I rewrite this code so that each subclass defines the values of variables it inherits from its superclass, without altering the superclass? And how would I define the value of variables for each instance of a class, so that I'm only changing the values of that instance, without altering the subclass?

Animals.as

Code:
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;[code]..........

Also, conventionally, what should be in my Main class? Only the addChild code which attaches MCs to the stage? Or should the values of variables be defined in Main? What am I missing? I recently read Foundation Game Design with Flash and didn't feel like the explanation was sufficient. I've tried scouring the web for OOP tutorials, but they're either too basic or too far over my head.where I should be defining values of variables for classes, subclasses, and instances?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Importing Classes / MovieClips - Spawning Instances Of A Symbol

Jul 6, 2009

i'm creating an application using AS3.0 and class files. in this application i have a MovieClip in the library i'm using that contains several symbols and configurable textfields and have already defined the functionality for these symbols. my question is, if i'm creating an application and through actionscript and i'm spawning instances of a symbol, do i have to define the functionality and initialize this symbol in the main application class?

specifics: i'm creating a panorama app with markers that are papervision3d planes. they use a movieClip texture that i've created and i want to configure textfields and display pictures that describe the info in the marker. i created a panoApp.as class file that configures the panorama. but i also have a marker.as class that defines the symbol's behavior. this movieclip has symbols in it it's stage that i've defined (ie: name_textfield, description_textfield, etc..) when i compile the project, the compiler errors saying that the variables/identified internal symbols are missing.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Access Vars Between Document Class And Other Classes?

Apr 19, 2009

For the example, there's a single FLA with a document class "main.as." In the public class main.as package, there is a public variable: "var example:String='example';." Inside of the FLA, there is one movie clip in the library and it is assigned a custom base class "sub.as." The movie clip is then placed on the first frame of the stage so its constructor is run at runtime and reads the value of example.

What is the proper way to get the value of "example" in the root document class? Using "root.example" in the sub.as class to target the document class returns an error and when I trace "root", I get "null." Main.example naturally throws an error because that's looking at the actual class and not the movie / stage its attached to.The round-about way I've done it before is to dynamically add the object in the library and pass in the root path when I create a new instance of it (example: submc:sub = new sub(this); ).Is there anyway to get back to the document class with a built-in method like root, etc?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Document Classes And Nested MCs - Term Undefined

Jan 6, 2012

I am trying to create a gallery. I am having a problem coding the document class for a menu window ("galleryPane"), which is to be called into the Main class at runtime. In particular, I am encountering problems dynamically creating the thumbs container. I want the thumbs container to be accessible from both the galleryPane class and the Main gallery class [the galleryPane class will need to control thumbsContainer scrolling properties, and the Main class will load content into it].

I have an empty movieclip in the .fla library (with a class name of "All_thumbs" for exporting purposes). In my galleryPane class, I have created a new public instance of this (called "thumbsContainer") and have added that within the nested structure in the menu. However, when I call it in a later function to manipulate its movement, the undefined term error is thrown and I cannot understand why. Here is what I have in the galleryPane document class.

ActionScript Code:
package  {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.display.SimpleButton;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.events.Event;
