ActionScript 3.0 :: Finding The Size Of The Stage/Viewing Area

Dec 18, 2009

How do I determine the pixel size of the stage or viewing area defined in Flash CS4? Isn't it just stage.width and stage.height?

Okay now the long version:

I'm working on a script in AS3 and Flash CS4, and I'm doing some art by code.

I wanted to make a progress bar for a preloader, so I made a Preloader MovieClip and on that movieclip I drew a white rectangle, and I told it to appear at stage.width / 3 and stage.height /3. It drew it at the top corner instead, and after a lot of experimentation, and reading the ActionScript 3.0 Language and Components Reference I found that a display object's width and height are defined by their contents, and you can't manually alter them to be bigger. So I figured that I could make an invisible rectangle the size of the stage in the background of the preloader MovieClip and that would make it the size of the stage, but I realized that I would still be stuck manually setting the stage size to match what I wrote in ActionScript. Untill the MovieClip containing the Preloader was added as a child object to the stage, which would then set the stage.width and stage.height to match those of the contents.

Now that I talk about it, I suppose I'm looking for the size of the perspective or viewing window, rather than the stage. The stage can be larger or smaller than the viewing window in Flash, can't it? But the perspective of the window is finite, unless you change it.

The thing is I'm sure I've polled this information to position an object at the center of the viewing area before, but I can't for the life of me remember how. So, that's what I'm asking; how do I find the dimensions of the viewing area, so that I can either position an object at the middle, or create an object the size of the viewing area, by code?

how I can find the original stage size of an SWF that has been loaded into a parent clip via MovieClipLoader? In the child clip, there are a number of elements that extend beyond its stage, so when I check the _width and _height properties, then they include the stage overlap.

I tried using mc.getBounds(), but it doesn't seem to give me what I'm after.

Flash Osx - Viewing Applications On A Mac Stage.stageWidth/stage.stageHeight Return 0 In Firefox/IE

Dec 13, 2009

I am using SWFOBJECT to embed my flash content. I have been worried about stage.stageWidth and stage.stageHeight returning 0 in Firefox/Internet Explorer; this problem is referred to in question #21 on the SWFOBJECT FAQ [URL]..I have been told that this problem is particularly prevelant on Macs. The SWFOBJECT FAQ (question 21) indirectly suggests that this problem does not occur with static publishing. Is this correct? Is it still advisable to implement a solution to this stageWidth/stageHeight problem, even if you are using static publishing?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Locking Viewing Size Of Swf File

Oct 30, 2009

I am designing a website using the combination of Dreamweaver with some flash swf files inserted. The page template is actually a very long vertical jpeg that will be imported at the end of my flash swf file. It is a very vertically long file so when the view gets to the page, they will be able to scroll down seeing only white the whole 2 seconds of animation before the page fades into view.

I am going to learn how to use action scripts to allow the viewer to to scroll up and down within that swf file that is imput in a 1row 1 column table in dreamweaver. Does this make any sense to anyone? The file is vertically long so it stretches the table all the way down when viewing in a web browser. I need to know how to lock the finalized physical view of the swf file. Then use action scripts to scroll down and up the length inside of the window, yet keeping the outer actual pixel size locked.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Finding Objects Within Area?

need a method of finding all the objects over the top of another object...

I realise I could use hitTest to check if something is intersecting, but I can't use it to find the names of the said objects. I also realise I could just cycle through all the objects on the stage and calculate it that way, but considering there's over 300 objects that could 'possibly' be covering this particular object, thats a lot to calculate, and i'd like it to be snappy...

ActionScript 3.0 :: Get An Object To Increase In Size The Lower It Goes Down The Stage And Decrease In Size The High It Moves Up The Stage?

Dec 29, 2009

I'm trying to get an object to increase in size the lower it goes down the stage, and decrease in size the high it moves up the stage.

It only needs to increase or decrease by a small amount. Basically, it's for a game character. To ad realism to his movements, it would be nice to have this feature.

This is where i'm up to so far:

Code:
import fl.transitions.Tween;
import fl.transitions.TweenEvent;
import fl.transitions.easing.*;

[code]....

I think I need something like:

if (object moves up)
decrease
else if (object moves down)

Professional :: If Go Fullscreen When Viewing An Flv The Video Remains On The Stage

I've used a standard skin on an FLVplayback component which loads and plays perfectly. The problem arises when I enter fullscreen mode and then leave it again. Once I've done this, the video remains on the stage irrespective of what frame I'm on. I can even change scenes and the video remains in the middle. I haven't even added the video using actionscript so I don't really understand how it could possibly stay on more than the frame its inserted in!? At the moment I've used no ActionScript to control the video. I apologise if I'm missing something, this is the first time I've dealt with videos.

So, I have a dynamic text box, which, naturally, being dynamic, changes. What I would like to figure out is how to tell when the changing text is larger than the textbox holding it. Of course, just because it is a certain number of characters long doesn't mean it will be larger than the textbox holding it. Twenty of the letter "w" is larger than twenty of the letter "i" So, is there a way to tell if the textbox isn't large enough to hold its text?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Finding The File Size In The Swf Header?

Jul 27, 2009

how to find the file size in the swf header. I am looking at the swf file format spec v10 pdf and it says that "The FileLength field is the total length of the SWF file, including the header. If this is an uncompressed SWF file (FWS signature), the FileLength field should exactly match the file size. If this is a compressed SWF file (CWS signature), the FileLength field indicates the total length of the file after decompression, and thus generally does not match the file size. Having the uncompressed size available can make the decompression process more efficient."

If I were to look at the hex value of a swf what would I look for to find the file size?

Flash 9 :: Actionscript Viewing - Converting A Graphic To A Symbol Or Drawing A Pentagon On The Stage

I deem such a feature necessary to do the projects I have been given, especially having very little experience with AS.

IDE :: CheckBox Component: Increase Size Of Hit Area?

Mar 10, 2009

I'm trying to make selectable thumbnail images for a touch screen app where the user can touch the thumbnail image and turn a CheckBox on or off to select/deselect it.

The thumbnail images measure 100x100 pixels, and I want the CheckBox to be in the upper right hand corner of each image. When I go to the Adobe AS3 help site, it says that it should be possible to increase the size of the CheckBox hit area in one of two ways:

1) Select the component on the Stage and use the Free Transform Tool or any of the Modify > Transform commands.
2) Use the setSize() method or applicable properties of the CheckBox class.

According to this same site, if you increase the size of the instance, you also increase the size of the hit area.

I've tried both of these, and none expand the hit area over the entire thumbnail. In fact, neither seems to increase the size of the hit area at all. In order to select a particular thumbnail, the user still has to hit the CheckBox.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Fit Text To Area - Font Size Increase/decrease ?

May 23, 2011

I need to implement a functionality where a user adds some text into a text field. Next if a user clicks on a button, then the font size increase/decrease so as to accomodate entire text in the available area. That means if a user has added just hello world in 12 px font and text field size is say 400*200 and user clicks on the button, the font size increases such that the text is occupied in the complete text field. Similarly if lot of content is added at a font size of 16 or so then clicking on the button reduces the font size to make it fit into the available text field area.
