ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash Infinite Number Of Children Wasting Memory?

Sep 2, 2010

At the moment, I came across this problem where I have to work with many swf files.The problem is I'm using addChild() & loader to navigate between each swf. It doesn't seem to be a problem at first, but after numerous times of clicking back and forth, the flash player starts running slow.So I've came to a conclusion that eventhough new swf are added every time I clicked, but the parent swf still remained at the back which is overlapped by the child.

Each value object has 2 properties. ObjectID and ParentID. For parents the ParentID is null and for children the ParentID is the ObjectID of the parent.

Essentially the tree should look something like this:

Actionscript 3 :: Removing Parent Memory Used By All The Children?

Sep 17, 2010

I'm making a rather large flash project and so I'm concerned about memory usage. At the end of each section of the application I remove the overarching parent element that holds the content. Although this remove the parent, does this also free up the memory for each of the children contained within this, or should I run an iteration to remove those prior to removing the parent?

I'll give a little more explanation in-case I'm not expressing what I want:

addChild(movie1);
movie1.addChild(movie2);
movie1.addChild(movie3);
By using this code:
removeChild(movie1);

Does it remove movie2 and movie3 from memory or are they still stored, just unlinked?

Actionscript 3 :: Constraining Number Of Children In A ViewStack ?

Mar 7, 2012

I have the following code to create a ViewStack which is used as a dataprovider for a TabBar:

<s:TabBar id="objectTab" dataProvider="{vs_objects}"/>
<mx:ViewStack id="vs_objects" width="100%" />

I want to constrain the number of children the ViewStack to avvoid the tabs going out of the screen when the user opens many tabs without closing any. I attempt to do this by removing the oldest element in the ViewStack when the user opens a new tab and the size of the ViewStack is above 9.

private function openTab(object:Object): void {
//Create a new NavigatorContent(form) and add it to the ViewStack[code].........

The image below illustrates my problem, where the dark grey color illustrates the selected Tab. There should only be one selected tab, which works perfectly fine with both the child selection approaches above, when i don't remove a child before selecting a new. When i remove a child and then open a new Tab, the new Tab does not get selected properly, it only gets "painted" in the selected color. In This case Tab 40 is still shown when i open Tab 41 (exceeding 9 tabs). The result of this issue is that Tab 41 is not rendered completely.

UPDATE: The problem was my AS3 code inside the childrens NavigatorContent's that caused the application to behave this way. The solution was using the callLater method:Doric's

code example:

protected function openTab():void
{
var form:Container = new Container();[code]............

ActionScript 3.0 :: Limiting A Container To A Certain Number Of Children?

Feb 9, 2009

At one point in my script I'd like to check a MC for the number of children and limit this number to 3. For that I use this script:

Code:
if (container.numChildren > 3){
for (i = container.numChildren; i > 3; i--){
container.removeChild(container.getChildAt(i-1));
popError('Horizontal nur 3 Elemente!');
}
}

This somehow works fine if there are 4 or 5 children in the MovieClip, but as soon as there are 6 or more, it throws an Argument Error #2025 and does not remove anything. BTW it does not make difference if I use container.removeChildAt(i-1);

Flash :: SWFaddress Stuck In Infinite Loop?

Jan 12, 2012

I have an issue with SWFAddress in Flash: when the user navigates to a page within my flash app, I call "setValue". This changes the URL in the browser's address bar, which in turn calls the "externalChange" event in flash. This event causes the flash app to load the page displayed in the url bar... so the app keeps changing the flash page and updating the url bar into infinity.

How do I know if the url bar was changed by flash or manually by the user?

Flash :: Implement A Infinite List In Flex (hero)?

Apr 12, 2011

I'm new to Flex/ActionScript (.NET/Java has been my main playground so far).I'm trying to build a Flex app that has a list that is meant to look and behave like an infinite list (of items - which can be any object). The idea is that the user should be able to scroll up or down and never reach the end of the list in either direction.

An example would be a list of numbers. Scrolling up will show negative numbers; scrolling down will show positive ones. Now, my list is a simple Flex Spark list (using Flex Hero).It is bound to a data provider that is an ArrayList.My initial idea was to listen to the scroll event and add/remove items as needed. However, in the current build of Flex Hero, there is a bug that doesn't raise scroll events for vertical scrollbars sometimes (http:url].....).So, I'm using the workaround suggested in the link above (i.e listening to the propertyChanged event of the list's scroller's viewport. The event though only gives me the current verticalScrollPosition. And it looks like the default spark list supports smooth scrolling and raises the event many times before the list scrolling comes to a standstill (it is a nice visual effect).Now, I need to :

Figure out whether it is scrolling up or down (how do I do that?)

Figure out which items are visible. I can get this from:

list.dataGroup.getItemIndicesInView()

Add/remove items as needed, so that the user can scroll up and down forever, never reaching the end of the list in either direction.

I've tried the following code but it doesn't work. (comments in code).

import mx.collections.ArrayList;
import mx.core.INavigatorContent;
import mx.events.FlexEvent;[code].....

Actionscript 3 :: Lazy Loading Infinite Scroll Background In Flash CS5?

Feb 8, 2011

The project I'm working on has a massive background image (800px wide by 2585px tall) that slowly scrolls upwards. Before, I was using the code [URL].. I modified the code to scroll upwards, but in addition to having a weird intermittent bug that occasionally displays a pixel-tall blank line after the image and before looping the next, it really doesn't seem to handle dynamic loading well (I've tried using several different preloader scripts and it breaks all of them), something that may not have been an issue with the initial implementation but is now that I'm using a monstrously huge image.

Thus, my question: a. Is there another bit of free, Flash-based infinite scroll code floating around that has support for lazy-loading background objects (Say, the existing background chopped in 6)?
